View Full Version : Things that annoyed you abt Denise Huxtable...
Ireneparalegal 02-04-2006, 02:48 PM Her funky wardrobe. It looks like she shopped at a vintage or thrift store, at least an expensive thrift store.
She always appeared, at least in the early seasons, that she was annoyed. She seemed to have an annoyed look on her face.
When she wanted a car, she only thought abt the car and didn't take into consideration the cost of maintaining a car. I did like the fact that she didn't mind having an older car. The way the character was, I had assumed she would want a brand new car. Good for her!
She always wanted to take the short cut around things, especially her education.
She really annoyed me when she brought home that guy who had two different socks and he put down lawyers/doctors and was downright rude to her parents. I wouldn't expect the Denise character to even want to go out with a guy like that.
Brian Damage 02-04-2006, 02:53 PM There was one thing that really annoyed me about Denise and that was when she got her driver's license and started singing, "I got my license, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!!!"

Oh yeah!!!! I forgot abt that. I seen this episode the other night and it was that very thing that made me say, "I'm going to make a thread abt her annoying things." Thanx Brian.

It was a little unrealistic that a 16 year in 1985 would drive a CAR like that to school-lol It's no way in hell a 16 year female would ride around in that Old long piece of red garbage-lol-lol

I know you have an issue with that Solomon. I am shocked that Denise Huxtable, would want a car like that too, considering. But in the realistic world, teens are happy with just abt any car. My teen daughter is always saying "if I could have a clunker, I would be happy, it's better than depending on anyone to drive you anywhere." I was the same way when I was a teen. If I could have a car that would have made my day!!!!!!!

Same here, my first car was a 1989 Buick Skylark, not a car that every teen would want to be seen around driving. But I was just happy to have any car.

But I'm sure your car didn't look anything like the car Denise had-lol

In my pre-teen and teen years, it was customary for a person to have an older model car. Even now, I still see alot of kids wanting a car that's old, just to be different, because it's easier on the pocketbook, it's a hand-me-down, or they want to fix it up. Denise's car is a dream for a car fanatic who loves old cars. It wasn't banged up or dented. My ex-husband when we dated, had a 66 Impala and it was in very good condition. When he sold it, alot of guys were wanting it.
Brieannas21 02-08-2006, 07:48 PM But I'm sure your car didn't look anything like the car Denise had-lol
My first car wasn't a beauty at all. The fabric from the top of my car was coming down and I had to staple it up LOL. It was a off white color like a egg shell color. It didn't have any dents on it, It was in pretty good shape. My dad bought me that car because he said that it was something that I could wreck up with out him getting pissed off LOL. But I was just happy to have any car.

Seemed???????? She was. Did you check out that thread I posted abt how Denise/Lisa couldn't even multiply when she was "rapping" on the drums...
3X3 is 3 ??????? WTF???? Was that for real???? I couldn't believe she did that!!!

Ireneparalegal 02-23-2006, 12:33 AM OMG I am so glad I am not the only one who noticed that!!!
The yeah! yeah! yeah! yeah! thing bothered me too.
Her clothing didn't bother me that much b/c I have a friend who dresses like a modern version of Denise, so to say. And most of the time in the first few seasons she didnt bother me a whole lot, but then she just got annoying. Especially after she got Martin and Olivia.
It was so funny when that occurred, me and my daughter were like what the hell????? OMG, I just want to know if that was for real or was Lisa really as dumb as her character?
That "yeah, yeah, yeah" thing can go straight to the toilet too.
DirtMcGirt 02-23-2006, 02:01 AM Her sense of entitlement. The one episode(the one others refered to about her multiplyin wrong) she kept actin like she should be given credit for every average little thing in her life. http://i1.tinypic.com/of6mmb.gif
nerrad 02-23-2006, 12:21 PM To be honest, nothing really. I didn't like the show anyway, LOL. OK, her warddrobe wasn't the best. I loved her hairy arms though:happyface
Brieannas21 02-23-2006, 02:06 PM She annoyed the hell out of me on "A Different World." She went from an "A" student in High School, and when she got to College she started to fail out. I didn't understand it.
Another thing was her career choices, I know Lisa had to leave the Cosby show to have her baby. But couldn't they have come up with a better plan for her then her going to Africa to be an assistant for a photographer. That just made her seem more odd and flighty. They could have had her going to Africa for cultural reasons.

Thank You GF!!!!!! Yes!!!! I know college is a hard experience. Yet, she went from being a great student to someone who completely failed???? Was Bill Cosby trying to make a point with this character or what? And I so agree with you on the Africa thing. They should have had her go to junior college. Not everyone is cut out for University or college. But the family had themselves to blame with nagging her abt which college she was going to; the grandfather pushing (yes pushing!) her to go to Hillman. I posted this before and let me say it again: A student who adds a university to their list of college choices BASED ON THE FACT THAT NO ONE ELSE SHE KNOWS GOES TO THAT UNIVERSITY, is someone who needs to really look at herself and her future and figure out what she wants to do with her life. She had wanted to go to the University of North Dakota just because she knew no one else was going there?????? Give me a friggin' break.

I don't think she was spoiled, I think that she was lazy when it came to working and her college education.

maybe that's why Lisa didn't want nothing to do with the show anymore and the reunion show...the character of Denise was so annoying, spoiled, dumb and made to look so rotten.
Ireneparalegal 02-26-2006, 06:38 PM I thought there was a tiff between her and Bill.
But I think all the kids got dumb when they got older; Sondra (and Elvin) dropped out of school to open a "wilderness store"; we all know what Denise did (or didnt) do; Theo was ok, but he was a bit of a womanizer at times; and Vanessa, well she was just dumb and overanalized everything. Remember the episode where she left Dabnis a note... something about an "emotional map" and her returning to her "roots of simplicity?"; Rudy wasnt really old enough to go through that Huxtable tradition of dumbness.
That may be a little harsh, but thats how I see it. Yet another reason the earlier seasons are MUCH better than the last few.
Out of all the kids, I could tolerate Rudy and Theo. I was irritated when the Vanessa character was hooked up with that ugly old guy. She could have done alot better.
I was happy (me happy???) with Claire when she got upset with Sondra and the stupid wilderness store idea. Come on, why go to a university and get a great education only to open a store that won't do well in the area you live in? She could have done that without going to Princeton. All the kids had freakish ideas. Even Theo and the helicopter for the prom crap. WTF????
Her taking the short cut around things mainly her education really annoyed me. I'm in the record business YEAH YEAH YEAH!!! I was like please. And when she wanted to be a special education teacher, and did not think she had to go back to school, talking about her experience with Olivia was enough.

Claire can get on my nerves but in that episode I was cracking up when she said Sondra you owe us 16,459.76 (not sure of the amount), and I want my money now-LOL.

From season 4 on the show became unwatchable as I watch the repeats on Nik at Nite there was a big difference in the show. Sure kids do grow up but not to a point of being total idiots. Each one got dumber. Theo and his learning disability was dealt with well but his womanizing ways was nerving. The Denise Huxtable character went from being a likable character with a good head on her shoulder to a complete dingy moron. The show did not treat Denise Huxtable character well. I was glad to see Lisa Bonet come back but to have her character so dumbed down to a point she became unlikable and not enjoyable to watch.
The Rudy and Kenny "Bud" relationship was a carbon copy of Clair and Cliff and Sondra and Elvin. She was the dominant one and Kenny was the chauvinistic pig. It was hard to watch that one especially when in one episode Rudy stated, "You got to earn my love." Hello what does a child know about earning someone's love. When Rudy got older she became somewhat mean spirited with an attitude.

Yeah, Solomon was the first to mention the comparison with Rudy, "Bud", Cliff and Claire. What was Bill Cosby thinking??? He would rather have laughs at the expense of the men on the show rather than have a realistic sitcom? It was worth it to him to get laughs at making people seem dumb, be dumb, act dumb, become dumb...Geez:rolleyes:

It was pitiful that Cosby contradicted himself by saying in TCS he wanted positive images for African-Americans but he turned around and made the men on the show look like fools and/or idiots. What he did was recycled what has been done on previous sitcoms where the men are out of touch and the women are on the ball with life. The difference was that the women bashed the men to a point of nearly dehumanizing them.

Yep, contradict himself is what he did. But then again, this is a man who loves to tell others how they should parent, what kind of person they should be, what kind of education they should be getting and yet, like I said before, he cheated on his wife. Contradiction, if you look up that word in the dictionary, it should have Bill's picture right there.
Brieannas21 03-09-2006, 04:08 PM I didn't find anything negative about TCS at all. Everyone do stupid things from time to time. I didn't see all the male bashing that everyone is talking. I thought that it was a great show about a black family that you didn't see back in the 80's and early 90's. IMO everyone on TCS everyone had respect and love for each other. You didn't see the husband and wife belittling each other, they weren't calling each other names, fighting like children. There are a lot of men in the world who are like Elvin, they think that men should bring home the bacon while the woman should cater to their every need. There are men out there like Cliff who think that they can fix everything that's broken but end up making matters worst. It was comedy, if TCS made men look like fools and idiots then every family situated comedy from the past and present has made all men look like fools and idiots. IMO

It's weird when TCS first came out I was abt 20...I laughed and enjoyed it so much. Until they brought in Pam, then it went downhill. Anyways, being 40 and looking at it now, I see it differently. I still love to watch it and i have my fave episodes. Being way older now, I guess I see alot of what I didn't see back then. The males being dumb, is funny and cute at times, but I think like a previous poster said abt Bill criticizing other shows for not being realistic, etc. only to have the audacity to have the men be somewhat lower on the totem pole AT TIMES, is what we are saying. I can't speak for everyone, but I think in general that is the point trying to be made here.
Brieannas21 03-09-2006, 06:00 PM The point of my post is that I don't see the so called male bashing that you all are talking about. 95% of the show has something to do with the children and the other 5% has to do with Cliff and Claire and the other adults. I don't see the women on the show putting down men in any way. The only thing that I could see was Cliff screwing up when he was trying to fix things, that was a on going joke with the show. They had Vanessa, Denise, Sondra, Rudy and Pam all doing stupid things at times, so were they female bashing as well?
SterlingMaloryWinger 05-15-2014, 11:40 AM I didn't mind Denise too much. Many large families have at least one screw up of a kid that has pretty poor decision-making tendencies. She reminds me of more than a few people. Bright people with a crazy amount of potential that are just lazy. Such a waste. She was definitely a cutie though. However if there was one thing that I had to pick about her that was unappealing, it would have to be the hairy arms. I remember those A Different World eps where it was crazy noticeable. And I know the whole "inner beauty" argument people would respond with but still... come on! If there's one specific incident of something that she did (or didn't do in this case), it'd be that time she forgot to mail in the response to the Navy for Martin. That was just a testament to her main character flaw, her carelessness. While her cavalier disposition was usually admirable, it bordered on a few times and sometimes crossed the line into negligence and irresponsibility. Even with all of that said, still... shortie was pretty cool. I'd kick it with her.
liane49 05-15-2014, 01:45 PM It was so funny when that occurred, me and my daughter were like what the hell????? OMG, I just want to know if that was for real or was Lisa really as dumb as her character?
That "yeah, yeah, yeah" thing can go straight to the toilet too.
The show was paned after Bill Cosby's family so I wonder if he really had a daughter like that.
liane49 05-15-2014, 01:47 PM I thought there was a tiff between her and Bill.

The parents were both sucessful and a doc. and a lawyer so I guess the show had to show some kids not being so sucessful to be realistist.I know the parents both loved each other a lot but I hated it when Clair would always tell Cliff what to do and he never stood up to himself or not very much.
mets82 05-15-2014, 04:12 PM Denise always dressed like a flake. Why do you have to be an oddball? What about her getting married to a guy her parents never met? You know it also bothered me when she couldnt stay at one career. I do think, though, that Denise, should have never went to Hillman in the first place. I mean I seem to remember that the family, especially the grandfather, forced her to go more or less.
ThomasE 05-15-2014, 11:41 PM Wow! You can feel the love for Denise all across this board.... (rolls eyes) lol
TVFactFan 05-17-2014, 09:48 PM She was LAZY and not very ambitious:lol:
Bronson 05-24-2014, 10:47 PM Denise was a twit. I still remember that episode where she made such a big deal over a stripper being at a bachelor party that Martin was going to. She and Sondra were especially ridiculous in that episode and if I were Martin, I would have wondered if I wanted to remain married to this idiot.
mets82 05-29-2014, 05:35 PM Bronson, I hear you!! What a big deal over nothing. And whats with what Sondra wore in that episode. It looked like she was wearing a table cloth.
Bronson 06-11-2014, 08:54 AM Yes what Sondra was wearing was awful.
Furienna 06-23-2014, 07:38 AM To me, the problem with that episode was: While I can understand that Denise and Sondra didn't want their husbands to look at strippers, (Heaven knows I never would have let my husband do that either, if I had one) they never acknowledged that simple fact. No, they had to go all straw feminist and claim that female striptease was so demeaning towards women, while male striptease wasn't demeaning towards men. Yeah right...
Bronson 02-19-2015, 10:45 AM Lazy and dumb and spoiled
I agree Denise's personality made it hard to root for her.
