View Full Version : Reply Here if you preferred Family Matters over The Cosby Show
TVFactFan 02-02-2006, 05:24 PM Bith shows were fun to watch but I enjoyed Fm a little more because the episodes didn;t focus too much on Carl and his friends or his father or Harriet and her Friends or her mother. The eps involved everyone almost all the time and the main thing FM never did was base an entire episode around the youngest child like the Cosby Show did with Rudy several times. So who is with me when I say family Matters over the Cosby show?
Johnny S 02-02-2006, 05:29 PM I am with you! The Cosby Show is watchable to me at times, but sometimes I just can't stand it!
TVFactFan 02-02-2006, 07:34 PM Well, I'm replying.... but The Cosby Show is a million times better than Family Matters.
I still enjoy FM a lot, but it doesn't hold a candle to TCS.
I know you would prefer any season of Family Matters over the last two seasons of the Cosby show
gilligan fanatic 02-02-2006, 07:38 PM I think the last time I watched Family Matters was when it was still on ABC. I like it better than Cosby Show though.

I'm with barwars on this one, sorry TVResearcher

Well give me your reason why TCS is better than FM
PrettyinPink55 02-02-2006, 07:46 PM Family Matters seemed to be in a different class humor wise. I think of The Cosby Show as one of those classics, while Family Matters as just not at that level. It's hard to explain.
I guess I always found the storylines of The Cosby Show more interesting.
I loved Family Matters, don't get me wrong, but when Urkel cloned himself into Stephan Urkel and started doing all that teleportation stuff....it lost my interest. Maybe it was too out there for me? I don't know.
The Cosby Show seems to have a more universal appeal to it.
Mrgman 02-02-2006, 08:23 PM I like them both but FM gets the edge because of Steve Urkel
PrettyinPink55 02-02-2006, 08:27 PM Can you believe what the show would've been without him?

Actully I can recall several episodes (25-30) were the episode was just based on Steve and Carl, I mean Yeah the side charcters appeared but they didn't have a storyline during the episode...
and TCS in my mind is a better show, Family Matters is a great show but It never became as great as TCS...
spunkygirl 02-02-2006, 08:52 PM I can stand to watch more of Family Matters than I can of the Cosby Show. Claire Huxtable just grates on my nerves too much to be able to stand alot of the Cosby show.
Not to say TCS wasn't a good written show it was, but just not my cup of tea.
PrettyinPink55 02-02-2006, 10:32 PM When did FM move to CBS? I stopped following it then.
Mr. Monitor 02-02-2006, 11:11 PM I loved both shows as I grew up on both but I loved Cosby first.
As someone mentioned earlier, The Cosby Show had more universal appeal but Family Matters was more kid-friendly. And The Cosby Show helped pave the way for Family Matters.
But they both have something in common in that they were both one of the few shows with predominently African American cast that appealed to the both black and white audiences. That's what made both these shows so great and why they'e still popular today years after they went off the air.

Very well said, Mr. Monitor!!!
Mr. Television 02-03-2006, 12:17 AM Overall TCS was better written but I just enjoyed Family Matters more. It just made me laugh while TCS always seemed to preach something at you. Thats not to say I didn't like it though.

1997

The final season. Fall 1997. I wish they had just ended it(with a proper finale) at the end of it's ABC run. The last season had some bright spots, but overall was bad. Jaleel White was too old to play the Urkel character by that time.
Oh and I prefer FM over TCS anyday. I've been trying to get into TCS(again) lately, and while there are a few episodes I can watch and love, there are a lot of episodes that are boring.
comedyfreak 02-03-2006, 08:14 AM I prefer watching Family Matters over The Cosby Show. To me, FM was funnier.
Chad Michael Murray 02-03-2006, 12:51 PM Overall TCS was better written but I just enjoyed Family Matters more. It just made me laugh while TCS always seemed to preach something at you. Thats not to say I didn't like it though.
I agree. I like the fact that FM was just there purely to make you laugh and that was it. TCS always seemed like you were supposed to have learned something in some way.

Which is the main reason why I preferred FM over TCS
JeffRuss1972 02-03-2006, 10:00 PM Family Matters was ALOt funnier to me than CS. I prefer Bill Cosby in the 70s.

In the beginning with FM i will agree with you but at some point it pretty much became the Steve Urkel show.(complete with twin characters like Stefan and that girl cousin Myrtle i believe)Urkel and Carl were like a comedy team and dont get me wrong i like FM but im more of a Bill Cosby fan and i think TCS never entered that self parody that became of FM and thats why i like TCS better.
I have to disagree their were plenty of episodes that focused on such characters as Sandra and Melvin,Vanessa,Denise, and Theo. Of course Rudy and Olivia got there fare share of facetime being that Bill Cosby with kids= Comedic gold but i never felt as if they engulfed the show like Urkel did to FM as that show went on.

I guess when i watched FM during it' original run every episode was about someone in my age bracket which made me like it more than TCS

PrettyinPink55 02-06-2006, 09:09 PM Who's Melvin?

I think he meant Elvin ;)
imthe80s 02-06-2006, 09:59 PM You got my vote!
Both shows are great, but I think I'd prefer watching Family Matters over The Cosby Show.
I like how Steve was like a part of the Winslow family, never heard much from the Urkels.
It was cool how they took him in and all.
bschmale1113 02-06-2006, 11:17 PM Cosby Show over Family Matters beacuse they were not be no Family Matters
