View Full Version : Anyone else sick and tired of hearing about American Idol

I don't know if it's because its geared for my age, but everywhere I go or anything I do I hear a reference to the show or somebody talks about. My awful school newspaper had a whole page on it. People are constantly talking about it. My teachers even talk about the show and everyone in the class knows what she they are talking about. I don't give a care about the show and I cant' escape it. I want to start intelligent conversations with people and all they want to talk about is lasts night American Idol. I can't stand it anymore. Everywhere I go its there. Even my history teacher was complaining that American Idol will be cut short because of the State of The Union Address tonight. I saw part of American Idol the first year and the people they thought were good I thought were terrible. I just don't' understand the show and don't get why people never get away from talking about it. I know Carrie Crazed will be against me on this, but I am so sick and tired of hearing about this awful phenom. Anybody with me on this? I don't care at all about this. I gave up watching the Simpsons because I don't want to see a commercial for the show.

Eh, I'm not much for it either but I guess it IS one of the defining shows of today. It used to annoy me but I've gotten used to it. It's here soooo no use complaining. Besides, I've had my fair shair of yapping about shows that other people really didn't give two ****s about in the past ha.

but not watching a show cause you dont wanna see a commerical for a show you dislike? i think thats kinda ridiciolous...

I never watched it, but American Idol was soured for me because of a message board I used to read around 2003, that erupted into a huge race war between Clay and Ruben, and I was all thinking "it's only a TV show" but these people had to turn it into a huge political debate, and people like that who couldn't just accept the show as a form of entertainment can all go to hell. Who knew that everytime a black person was voted off, it was because of a racist society who couldn't handle Tamyra or something

In a good light though, I would say that AI has likely taken the place of MTV for a younger generation since MTV has completely given up actually playing music videos, therefore making superstars... so it's really American Idol that is the way for people to pick and find new singers to "grow with" the way those of us from the 80's and 90's had MTV.

slipping off topic a little bit, you could say anything is racist. Some people think that Gilligan's Island is racist because there isn't a black cast away.

I think it's bull**** that if a white contestent does better than a black one, it's automatically considered racism.

In a way, I find it kind of a "you got served" way to those *******s who couldn't just accept AI as just a nice mindless form of entertainment that Kelly and Carrie's albums were both far bigger than Ruben and Fantasia's, even though I actually did like the songs I heard of Fantasia, but people have to make a "if a white person wins Idol, this is slavery all over again". What ever happened to an artist winning because they're the best artist? Like in the 1970's and 1980's, artists like Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Prince won Grammys and American Music Awards that they DESERVED, and nobody saw an issue about black vs. white. I remember a lot of those people also hating Kelly Clarkson (this was 2003) and predicting she was going to be a failure while Tamyra Gray was gonna become the next diva superstar... Kelly was one of the biggest stars of 2005, where is Tamyra? people aren't even as interested in how washed up she is compared to Justin Guarini, lol.

The part I find funniest is that there was such a race debate that exploded over Clay vs. Ruben, and as far as I'm concerned, neither of them are worth crossing the street for :happyface

Truthfully though, you never know. A lot of people thought that Kelly had come and gone and Miss Independent was gonna be her one and only hit (not counting the AI single) and then her second cd was gigantic. Two years ago, it looked like Kelly was on her way to Surreal Life and then she became huge with her second cd.

she actually scored four top 10 singles off her second cd, which is pretty rare nowadays especially for a pop artist, plus, artists don't release as many singles as they did back in the 80's so four top 10's is pretty impressive.

i don't really get annoyed hearing about it. sometimes, but not really. no one at my school really cares that i know of, and i only really hear about it on here. i only watch what's going on now, like to see who makes it. i never watch when they have the final ten or whatever when they sing. i usually just watch if i really like one of the people, and i watch the last show if i'm bored.

one thing I didn't like about AI's fans is that there are similar reality shows that they won't give a chance.

A few months ago, there was "Rockstar INXS", which a lot of rock fans who despise Idol actually watched. I only saw part of an episode once, but I thought they had a better song selection than Idol has (I mean, Idol had a Barry Manilow episode, ewwww, lol) and there was some really talented singers involved with the show, but because it was a reality show that wasn't American Idol, people didn't even try it out. I actually think JD Fortune (the Rockstar winner and now INXS frontman) has Clay Aiken beaten both in looks (like that's hard  ) and in stage/vocal talent.

During the one episode I saw of Rockstar, this one girl gave a showstopping performance of Bohemian Rhapsody that would've made Freddie Mercury proud, and I'm willing to bet if it was on Idol, the AI fans would've talked about it for days, but since it was Rockstar INXS, you didn't see a lot of "OMG, did you see (whatever her name was) performance of Bohemian Rhapsody last night??" the way I'm almost positive would've been done if it was Idol.

well, the thing is, you didn't like it because you didn't give it a chance because it wasn't American Idol. If you had given it a chance, maybe you might've liked it. But you guys were so stuck on AI to give similar reality shows a chance, instead of being like the Survivor fans who also enjoy Amazing Race.

It does get old seeing 100's of pages about Clay Aiken, arguably one of the ugliest celebrities foisted onto the American public in recent times. Someone so ugly that the recent outting of him is getting "ugh, we don't want him on our team" from countless gays, the same people who always want to find dirt on pop stars. But yet Rockstar gave us J.D. Fortune, someone who is cool, has a good rock voice, is very good-looking, but because he was on Rockstar, NOT Idol, you guys don't even know him, when he is everything Clay Aiken's not.

I'm also sick of hearing about DH and Grey's Anatomy, because well, they're over-plugged.

I think I have watched about 10 minutes of the show in the last five seasons. Once people started race-wars about the show the moment Tamyra Gray was voted off in season 1, it completely killed all potential interest I might have had in the show because I'm sick of everything turning into white vs. black bull**** instead of just voting for the better person.

Plus, I think the show has gotten too big for it's own good. People are so beset by Kelly's success, but remember that her career didn't really take off until she ditched the management that was given to her on the show (people act like she's a spoiled brat for "moving on", but who blames her!!!! When she had the AI management, she was singing crap like A Moment Like This, without them, she's doing songs like Breakaway and Since U Been Gone that was much better). If she still had them, she would be on Surreal Life by now. Same reason why Clay has done better than Ruben, he had enough sense to fire the management. Because the people the AI people get managed by try to make puppets out of their artists instead of letting them have their own artistic merit.

i think that the contestants do better when they arent tied with AI. Carrie's CD had little help from 19 entertainemnt and AI people, and look how big she is...her CD outsold all other Idol debuts.

I'm not sick of it at all. I'm hooked on it. I think it's a really amusing show, well at least the first couple episodes. It's funny in the beginning but then when they get the good singers performing, it's really cool to watch.

I've watched AI on occasion in the past, but I've never been crazy about it. The auditions annoy me more than anything. AI must screen who is being auditioned, yet they let people who are completely talentless go in and sing simply so America can laugh at them. What a horrible concept.

come to think about it, it's true. An "I don't like American Idol" thread will end up pissing off AI fans more than just getting people who aren't caught up with the hype to say they dislike it. That's the tricky thing, while a lot of people don't like American Idol, a lot of other people do, so a thread like this ends up getting taken the wrong way. Kinda like the anti-Roseanne threads over on the General Sitcoms board, instead of being an outlet for discussions about not liking Roseanne, more so fans of Roseanne are the ones who get ticked off and more involved in the thread. American Idol is a show that either you worship or loathe... same thing where Roseanne is a show that is either among ones favorites or among their most hated shows, so you hear nothing but the opposing sides who are so polar opposite.

THe show has never interested me. I don't care for critism and you must be strong skinned for that show. Even the singers the panel says are good I think aren't much. I prefer the old Boston show Community Auditions.

Well you know my opinion on this. So there's no use in my stating the obvious, BUT.. the one thing I must say that I don't really like is when people (I'm not referring to the original poster; I'm just stating something in general) say Idol is awful and pointless and horrible when they don't really KNOW that much about the show. I know so many people who just watch the auditions, and judge the show from that, but it's stupid because this isn't "American Audition". The show isn't just about people making idiots of themselves. That's just one-fifth of the whole process. It's a show about talent. I'm not trying to be all defensive about Idol but a lot of my friends who used to HATE American Idol decided to tune in on one competition week, and they ended up loving it. You're bound to find at least one person to like out of the final group, and I think that's the beauty of it. When you find that one person, it doesn't matter about the rest. I mean, there is a reason so many people love this show.

yeah i said that earlier...half the people that dont like AI...dont like it because its a reality show and never actually watched it

David

one thing I didn't like about AI's fans is that there are similar reality shows that they won't give a chance.

I think the reason why a lot of Idol fans don't watch INXS is because a majority of the Idol fans aren't into the whole rock thing. They may like a rock contestant, but a competition with 10 rock singers usually doesn't appeal to an American Idol fan where there are a number of singers who range in genre. And on top of that, it's just taste. I don't really like rock music, so it goes without saying that INXS wouldn't have appealed to me.
