View Full Version : Does your true personality come across accurately here?

Would you say people can get a pretty good idea of what you're like in real life here at S.O., or does your personality not translate well over the internet?? I ask, because for the longest time, I had the toughest time being able to be myself online, for various reasons. For one thing, I was always afraid of offending, or upsetting someone, so I would bite my tongue alot on things that I should have spoken up on. Another reason it was hard, is because Iv'e always had somewhat of a fear of popularity, because it seems like an awful lot to live up to. I would always hold back from being myself, out of fear of not being able to live up to other people's standards. It was sort of like I was looming in the background, trying to stay out of the limelight. Has anyone else here had either of these problems, or anything similar to it, or do you do a pretty good job of being yourself over the internet? I'm curious.

I'd say I'm a bit more cynical in real life.

But for the most part, I'm pretty much the sarcastic wisea$$ you see here.

I think Iv'e really come a long way this past year, in being able to be myself. Mainly because of some of the online friends Iv'e made, who have encouraged me, and given me more confidence. It really is quite amazing how much of a difference a little encouragement, and kind words can make in a persons life. When you don't have many friends like that, you have very little confidence in yourself.

I think I come across pretty accurately, but then again...I guess it depends how people see me. I'd have to know that first before I knew if I thought I was coming across the right way.

Yes and no. I can be more "open" online, and I am also as joking in person.

Same here. I have a friend who is NOT afraid of saying what's on his mind online, so I admire that in him. He is a bit assertive. But, like you said... there are times I also hold back in saying stuff online JUST like I would in person.

I'm a lot more shy in real life. I seem to be at ease a lot more when I'm talking over the computer.

I don't think I do. I talk a little bit in school but only to certain people. I can't just start a conversation with someone I haven't met before, stuff like that.

No not at all. In real life I am very shy and quiet. I'm also a bit uptight online where as I am more easy going off line. I guess online I'm "bad Mike" where as off line I am "good Mike".

Weird - I was going to post this exact same thread a few days ago. I had it all typed out and everything.

Anyways, no. I'm really sarcastic, and that doesn't come across on the computer. A lot of times I'll post something and when I read it later it seems like I'm angry but really I'm just messing around. I don't think anyone here, or in school for that matter, really knows me well at all.

Yes and no.

Offline - I'm more shy

Online - People know there are tv shows (particularily from the '80's) that I like. I think it's more likely to be accepted that you like a tv show, past or present online. The reason being that what brought most of us, if not all of us here, was an interest in a sitcom, drama, etc.

Eh, somewhat. I'm a lot my shy in real life until you get to know me. I guess no one ever knows your true self but you, though. I think I'm a nicer person at heart than I might appear to be ha, cause I'm such a wiseass.

Yes and no.

I really don't give a **** what anybody thinks of me in real life. I am quiet too, but I'll say whatever is on my mind. I'll wear whatever I want to, whenever I feel like it. I -DO- talk about my fave TV shows, movies, etc. a lot in real life. I talk openly about some of my fave celebs such as Rosie O'Donnell and Jane Fonda. Again, I don't give a **** what anybody thinks about me liking these people. I don't chatise anybody for liking certain celebs. I will occasionally bash celebs, but I don't bash the fans. So I guess what I'm saying is, I am quiet some of the time, laid-back all of the time, and I am not afraid to speak exactly what is on my mind.

It's because we don't actually have to see everyone here face-to-face, so it's a lot more comfortable and easier to pour out info or emotions online. I feel the same way. There are still so many people I do not know really well here, but I still find it a lot easier to say stuff here I wouldn't say in a room full of people in real-life.

as far as my wild and wacky personality </loser> yes, i pretty much act exactly the same way in real life, i'm just as random, make the same types of comments about things, but only with people whom i know well (otherwise i'm shy and dead silent). what i NEVER directly show in real life though is my depressive side. i mean i briefly mention it sometimes, but i've never actually to someone about it in real life; i only elaborate and let out those feelings online. i cry a lot, but only when i'm alone. people at school only really know that i'm depressed because they read my blog on myspace.

I can understand where you're coming from. Things can get pretty nasty around here when you share some of your more controversial political beliefs. If I shared alot of my feelings about certain things, I would be banned from here in a split second.

it can be for some. I don't think this forum does me justice. It allows us to say things to a certain extent, but at the same time, there are so many diverse people here and we need to watch our P's and Q's. I would love to see how we would be at some big ol' dinner with all of us around the table.

i find it pretty ridiculous how much i get jumped all over sometimes for making stupid anti-bush comments. do people not realize that i'm nothing but a stupid naive teenager? i don't KNOW anything about the world, thus my political views aren't very strong. stop taking them as seriously as you would a forty-year-old's.
