View Full Version : Just Our Luck - 1983 TV Comedy TVFactFan 01-30-2006, 02:21 PM anyone ever remember seeing this comedy starring T.K. carter? His character name was Shabu. I would like to see this someday tv star collector 01-30-2006, 07:48 PM Vaguely. This comedy series about a hip black genie only ran for about three months on ABC, from September to December 1983. Some famous people, including Roy Orbison, Dr. Joyce Brothers and Wink Martindale, made cameo appearances. Unfortunately, Shabu's magic didn't work against NBC's hit show THE A-TEAM. Carter had better luck with his recurring role as Punky Brewster's teacher (1985-1986). TVFactFan 01-30-2006, 07:54 PM Vaguely. TV Knowledge Fan 04-06-2006, 07:43 PM ...and it was okay. I DID like the episode where Roy Orbison made a RARE appearance on ANY TV show...as an ALIEN??? There may have been more offbeat ideas in the works, but it was too late to follow them through when ABC canned the show after 13 weeks. I remember TV GUIDE printing an ad where the stars are seated in a hot tub with some gorgeous girls...but the catch was, THAT only happened in the LAST scene of the episode advertised!! What a dirty trick to get viewers to watch..... TVFactFan 04-06-2006, 09:12 PM ...and it was okay. I DID like the episode where Roy Orbison made a RARE appearance on ANY TV show...as an ALIEN??? Lucky me!-lol TV Knowledge Fan 05-05-2006, 04:24 PM I believe I mentioned there were 13 episodes of "JUST OUR LUCK"...and I think ABC aired them all before pulling the show off the air in favor of "FOUL-UPS, BLEEPS & BLUNDERS" in January 1984 {'member THAT???}. TVFactFan 02-02-2011, 10:19 PM Does anybody know anyone I can get a copy of the episode with Roy Orbison in it? I have a ep but I'm not sure who is in it steevo 02-03-2011, 11:46 PM Sounds like that didn;t last long either-lol I remember that one. That was co-hosted by Steve Lawrence and Don Rickles (the insult comedian obviously had to tone down the insult humor for family hour). James28 02-01-2012, 06:23 PM Just Our Luck was T. K. Carter's first starring role in a television series. Richard Gilliland also starred in the series as Keith Burrows, a weatherman. The series was panned by many TV critics after the first episode had aired. There were some complaints of uninteresting writing and unfavourable comparisons to I Dream of Jeannie. The NAACP claimed that a black character being portrayed as a thankful servant as a white male was offensive, and called for a national boycott of ABC until it was taken off the air. By October, Abc had conceded to the demands of the NAACP and allowed the organisation to have creative control of the series. In the show's dialogue, the terms "master" and "servant" were removed, the so-called "jive talk" from Carter's character was restricted, and Actor Leonard Simon was brought into the cast and a few African-American writers were hired. JOL attempted to recover from the bad publicity and a few high-profile guest stars such as Roy Orbison appeared. Due to low ratings, JOL was cancelled after twelve episodes. Du Mont 02-02-2012, 07:26 PM I never watched 'Just Our Luck', but I do remember it as ABC's last gasp effort to breathe life into what turned out to be the last season of 'Happy Days', but it never took hold with the viewers. It averaged a 12.7HH/20%, providing a weak lead-in to 'Happy Days' stronger 13.9HH/20% at 8:30 pm (the only time the network aired 'Happy Days' outside of the Tuesday at 8:00 time slot). When 'Foul-Ups, Bleeps & Blunders' took over the timeslot, it did much better with a 16.4HH/24%. TV_on_the_Porch 02-03-2012, 07:28 AM (the only time the network aired 'Happy Days' outside of the Tuesday at 8:00 time slot) Except when it ran Thursdays at 8:00 to burn off leftover first-run episodes (after the airdate of the finale proper had been moved up) in June and July of '84.
