I DVR UM ev ery day on lifetime and then watch the week's worth over the weekend.
Inevitably I end up looking up all the cases on the net (and often end up here) o see if they have been solved yet.
On 1/24/06, UM aired the case of Dorothy DOnovan, 70 yr old Delaware woman murdered in 1991 by an apparent hitchhiker, a black male her husband, Charles Holden, had given a ride to.
Well, it turns out this case was SOLVED 4 days prior to the airing, in 1/20/06! What a coincidence :)
Police Arrest Man In Harrington Cold Case
By SHERELLE ROBERTS -- WMDT 1/20/2006
"Today the Delaware State Police has the opportunity to announce a significant arrest in the cold case homicide which has left a 14 year old impact on a local family."
A confident Police Superintendent Thomas McLeish announced Friday that Gilbert Cannon was arrested Wednesday and charged with killing 70-year-old Dorothy Donovan. She was killed in 1991, but when police leads and DNA evidence turned up dead ends, the case went cold. A break came last November.
"One of the items collected was later proved to be a very valuable piece of evidence, was a bloody palm print."
That print was linked to Maryland prison convict Gilbert Cannon with the help of an FBI DNA profiling database.
Although the arrest of Gilbert Cannon is putting police one step closer to solving the murder of Dorothy Donovan, her daughters aren't breathing easy just yet. They say there are still too many unanswered questions in their mother's case.
"We've heard many different things; maybe it was robbery, well why wasn't her purse opened up?" said Diana Abbott, Donovan's daughter.
Investigators say robbery wasn't the motive, but they don't know what was, or if the killer acted alone.
"There were fingerprints that have been unidentified but they are currently being looked at by the state bureau for identification."
Originally, police suspected Charles Holden, the victim's son. The night of the murder he gave Cannon a ride. Holden says he was only being nice to a hitchhiker.
But police say hours later, that hitchhiker killed Holden's mother, even though he'd never met her. For answers to their remaining questions, family members may trust in a higher authority.
"I always put my faith in God, that it would be solved. If it wouldn't be solved, it would be solved when I went to heaven," Abbott said.
Police say Charles Holden is no longer a prime suspect for the Donovan murder. The
preliminary hearing for Gilbert Cannon is scheduled for next week in Kent County.
