I was just watching the ep where Gilligan and Skipper go bald and there are two things in it that I've wondered about since I was a kid. I want someone here to explain. 1. In the cave Skipper says, "...our heads look like 2/3s of a pawn shop sign." What does that mean? 2. At the end Professor is explaining to them why all this happen and when they turn around, they have beards. Why is that? I guess I can understand the storyline about the bleach causing their hair to fall out, but what would that have to do with them growing beards? And why does Professor need to explain? He says "....and I've been telling you both for weeks now...." , therefore the beards were grown over a period of time, therefore, why didn't they shave like I would assume they do everyday? This has never made since to me.

Traditionally, a pawn shop sign consisted of 3 balls.

The Professor explains why their beards grew so quickly.

so that is the pawn shop sign line. I was wondering that myself. I get it the balls are bald like there heads. That is funny. I am going to have to say that to my dad's friend who shaved his head. It's a lot better than calling him cueball.

Thanks for the info on the pawn shop sign, but I don't remember ever seeing one like that. Or did they just used to be like that? And what about the beards? You say Professor was explaining why they grew so fast, but weeks, as he said, would not be "fast". And since the bleach caused their hair to fall out in the first place, how could it now have the opposite effect of causing hair to grow fast?

I always thought the Professor explained the increased growth rate of the facial follicles. I'll have to dig this episode out again and get my facts straight.

I remember a picture of the Three Stooges - or was it in a Stooges episode - where they have their heads in the 3 balls like that.

You could be remembering the Warner Brothers cartoon "Porky in Wackyland."
One of the sight gags had a three headed creature, and each head resembled a member of The Three Stooges. Then a small charcater steps in and says "His mother was frightened by a pawn brokers sign."
