View Full Version : Madeline vs. Winnie

I am still in utter shock that a 13 or 14 year old like Kevin is so head over heels in love with Winnie, that he constantly rejects some fox like Madeline. The actress that played her, Julie Condra, was recently in a made for tv movie called "Tail of two Bunnies", and she was an absolute fox. Too bad she wasn't Kevin's nextdoor neighbor when he was 12.

Tough call - I think I would like to date Madeline but Winnie would be the girl I would take home to my parents and marry..

Did you know Julie Condra is almost 30? So she would have been 20-21 when she was on The Wonder Years! Wow! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif

In the issue of Madeline vs Winnie, i see this as both having disadvantages for Kevin
with Winnie, Kevin had someone who loved him one episode, and hated him the next, i would not be able to deal with that.

With Madeline, Kevin had to keep on giving her up for Winnie, which probably made Madeline hate him
it was a lose lose for Kevin either way
(that's jsut my opinion)

Madeline would win the fight instead of Winnie, because Madeline is very outgoing and very beautiful. Winnie is pretty but not very outgoing, and not fun whatsoever.

I vote for Winnie Cooper. She had this mysterious vulnerability factor, which triggered her inability to sustain a consistent relationship with Kevin. I cannot help but think that Brian's(her brother who died in Vietnam) death had much to do with her love/hate involvement with Kevin. In other words, I think she found it difficult to allow herself to love and trust again. And I think if the show stayed on a little longer, we probably would have seen some of those old wounds surface and possibly watch her and Kevin work through them together.

As for Madeline, I liked her too. Although I do not think she would have been the best match for Kevin, I think the writers should have kept her around a little while longer. She brought this sensual quality to the screen and added extra tension to the Kevin/Winnie storyline.

Hi all,
Are there any other choices, besides phony tramp Madeline and psycho nutball Winnie?

You can have them both.

this is the easiest poll that i have ever hade to answer madeline v winnie i mean come on MADELINE is ten time better than winnie i mean really winnie was a total loon she had no idea what she was thinking (or doing) from day to day.One moment she was in love with kevin the next she couldnt stand him.madeline was right when she said i dont what people see in winnie.madeline on the other hand loved kevin because he was kevin winnie was too busy being in love with herself,i could go on and on about this i mean in the last show she broke up with him AGAIN for no real reason lets just hope that the person he married after the freak went to france was madeline
god what a long post sorry but ive been wanting to get this of my chest for years

I'll make a deal with you -- you can have Madeline and just give me a *picture* of her! I would probably find it more fulfilling than actually being with the phony, conniving little bitch.

Winne was better than Madeline at *what*?

But seriously, Winne did kick the hell out of Kevin's little heart better than anyone else!

I was just ready to create this exact same thread until I saw this one. I fell in love with Julie Condra when I first saw her too, I would have picked her over Winnie.

I'd have to go with Madeline. I always found it strange as well how Kevin was always dumping these really hot girls for Winnie. I mean Winnie was cute, no doubt, but she obviously wasn't nearly as hot as some of the other girls Kevin went out with.

Such as Madeline, such as Becky Slater. There are some more, but I can't remember there names off the top of my head. I'll have to dig through my tapes. Anyway it seemed to be a constant trend in the show that everytime Kevin was going out with a girl, at some point he'd end up wanting to get back with Winnie. I just never understood that. I don't know, I guess the fact that they grew up together bonded them or something.

Brad,
I am no fan of the psycho nut job Winnie. But, when Kevin told the phony, manipulative bitch Madeline to "get lost," it was one of the finest moments of his young life. The evil brat was begging for that.

As for that other little witch, Becky Slater, he only got involved with her to begin with in a spur-of-the-moment effort at making Winnie jealous. It was inevitable that that wouldn't go anywhere.
The show's writers had other plans for her. She was destined to become a sort of "enemy" -- or "rival" of his.

Neither Susan Fischer nor Linda Sloan was his to "dump."

And, if you're thinking of that little girl from the lake, Cara, that was only a "fling" -- he was already going steady with Winnie at that time and shouldn't have even messed with her in the first place.

Just out of curiosity, why do you dislike Winnie so much? I'm just wondering. By the way, did you know that the girl who played Becky was Winnie's sister? I found that out the other day, and was surprised by it. I never saw too much of a resemblance.

Artfiore1

Brad,
Well, basically Winnie represents the personification of the qualities I've disliked the most in so many women -- mind games, riddles, completely inexplicable taste in guys, senseless behavior, lies, deception, and ultimately heartache.

Initially, when that big monster Eddie Pinetti is bullying the hell out of Kevin, what does Winnie do? She starts going out with the bastard!! She acts like the big idiot who is terrorizing practically the whole school is this sweet angel who is merely misunderstood by everybody. In the end, while the scumbag is abusing her in the hall, with a hockey stick or something, obviously annoying the hell out of her, Kevin risks life and limb defending her against this ape, who happens to be about 3 times his size. Naturaly, Kevin gets the crap beaten out of him. And, all Winnie can do afterwards is tell Kevin what a jerk *he* is!

Then later, she also not only takes up with that other clown Jerk McCray, but she rubs Kevin's nose in it as often as she can -- even making out with the kid in the school hallway . . . AFTER telling Kevin that she wanted to break up with Jerk!

She acts at times like she loves Kevin, then at other times like she doesn't want to even know him. She showed how little he really meant to her by the impersonal way she signed his school yearbook when they graduated from junior high. Then, when he confronts her about it, she kisses him, but then runs away. And, what was the reason behind all this -- her parents were separating! (??)

She purposely lies to Paul, telling him that she likes Kevin, and when Kevin goes to see her, she slams the door in his face. The whole thing culminates, several misunderstandings later, in Winnie telling Kevin from across the road what a jerk *he* is.

She moves away and starts going to a different school. But then, she starts acting like a complete loon. Something's wrong with her, she seems to be reaching out to Kevin for help, visiting Kevin at his house, appearing without explanation in front of her old house on his street. But of course, she talks only in riddles -- she doesn't want to tell Kevin what the problem is. Instead, of telling him what's bothering her, she keeps telling him, in so many words, "Mind your own business" and then yells at him for not understanding! She becomes totally reckless and starts dropping everything to hang out and joyride with a bunch of stupid guys who are older than her and have a car. Kevin, of course concerned, tries to get her to slow down for her own good and to be the girl he used to know. And, after she gets wracked up in the inevitable car accident, Kevin is worried sick and waits outside her house all day. Then, when she's finally brought home from the hospital, he's told by her parents that she doesn't want to see him. (??) He eventually climbs up onto the roof of her house. And, after days of her mysterious crazy behavior and her refusal to talk to him, what does she say when she sees him in her bedroom window? "I love you."

When she and Kevin finally have a nice worthwhile relationship going for a while, she dumps him, as soon as she meets another guy.

In the end, Kevin chases her across the state to the place where she's working as a lifeguard. Naturally, she doesn't want to talk to him. Of course, Kevin has to learn the hard way that she's got another boyfriend at the resort where she's working. When he asks her about it, she accuses him of "spying" on her and pushes him, dressed, into the pool! A fitting reward for all his trouble.

Now, a better question, Brad: Why would anyone *like* her?

P.S. Yes, I did know that the girl who played Becky Slater is Winnie's real-life sister, although they don't look very much alike. My nieces are like that. One looks a lot like their mother, the other looks like their father. I can, at times, see a very slight resemblance in Winnie and Becky, though, if I look hard enough. (Maybe it's my imagination.)

Kevin should've gone with Madeline not Winnie. Winnie needed 2 b bitch slapped real bad and I rekon Kevin should've beaten tha crap out of that bitch a$$ ho long ago. She plays all sorts of games with him and keeps dumping him 4 other guys and then she chucks a psycho when he flirts with the waitress. Madeline didn't play games and she seemed to genuinely like Kevin. She would've been much better 4 him than b!tch a$$ Cooper

Ain't it the truth?

My name is Madeline. I'm so beautiful and sexy, I can take any boy away from his girlfriend whenever I want to. All I have to do is play with his head a little -- smile at him a lot in class, kiss him once unexpectedly and I'll have the damned fool wrapped around my little finger.

If I'm lucky enough, I'll be assigned a school project with him, for which he'll have to come to my house . . . where I'll happen to be in my underwear when he shows up. If at the end of the night he happens to accidentally leave his ID bracelet (a bracelet *she* gave him) at my house, I'll keep telling him I'll give it back to him. But, I'll conveniently keep forgetting to. So, he'll have to come back to my house again in order to get it back. I'll make arrangements with him for him to come and get it. But, when the time comes, I won't be there. How slick am I??

I can keep showing up in his face in front of his girlfriend, so it'll look like there's something going on between us.

I'm so hot, a few little seductive grins in the classroom will seal the deal. After they break up, I'll manipulate him into taking *me* to his friend's party. He'll be just thrilled to show *me* off in front of everybody, especially in front of her.

He'd be crazy not to pick me over his screwball girlfriend.

How lucky for both of us that there isn't a *third* choice . . . . like a nice, normal, honest girl!

Hmm, well, let's see....I, by the way, love how we're all taking this too seriously. But it's a testament to how good the show was.

I didn't like Winnie either. She was commitment-phobic and lead him a lot of the time. BUT, BUT, she was a 12-13 year old girl. I'd hate her for the things she did, then I'd realize that her emotions are not fully developed yet. To expect a 12-13 year old girl to realize right from wrong in the world of love, is unrealistic.

Kevin had his head turned easily as well, but never dumped Winnie for another girl. She seemed to grow distant from him and then drop the bomb, "Kevin, I've met someone". He only seemed tempted with other girls, but never followed through on it.

Ever notice how *sane* girls always lived too far away for a relationship? Cara, Terry the beach girl, the zit girl. And back home his choices were the unstable Becky Slater, Inga the Swedish meatball, and the wishy-washy Winnie. But, again, it's how true to life the show was. Cuz I lived that *exact* childhood as a young dude. Either I or the girl always moved away, and what was left over wouldn't appetize a homeless guy.

Oh, and yeah, I'd pick Madeline. She gets a bad rap for reasons unknown. She was HOTT for Kev, while Winnie was hot and cold. She had the great line, "I don't know what was so special about Winnie Cooper anyway". For Kevin to tell her to get lost was a brain-freeze.

Madeline was definetly prettier of the two, but was far too easy. She was throwing herself at Kevin, which only made him move further away. Winnie on the other hand, was the one moving away from Kevin, which only made him want her more. Its true; we want what we cant have!

Kevin had an infatuation with Winnie; while other chicks were turning his head, Winnie still had his heart.

Madeline was wayyyy too old looking for that show! She was hot though. Of course she was hotter than Winnie at the time, she was the exciting older woman even though she was supposed to be kevin's age.

I think the reason Kevin was so into Winnie Cooper is because they grew up together and were childhood sweethearts. They each had their first kiss with each other and I believe he always thought of her as his soulmate (It's funny how I am analyzing them like they were real people when it's really just a tv show with characters). Winnie was dull and boring as some have said in this thread but there was this innocence about her. Madeline though much more prettier then Winnie was not much of a challenge to Kevin she was the one all over Kevin. Winnie was more of a challenge to Kevin plus he loved her since they were kids. Madeline was just another pretty face. :)

Hi all,
I have always had a remarkable ability to *not* see the situation I am in when I am in it. I have no trouble seeing what happened . . . *after the fact*. I also have no trouble in seeing what’s happening to somebody else. But, when it comes to my own present situation, I am usually as blind as a bat.

So, if I had been Kevin, I probably would've done everything the way he did, including being obsessed with that one special girl he always loved (Winnie) and getting his head turned by Madeline. But as an outside observer watching the show, I want to just scream at him, "What's wrong with you, boy? Forget that pycho witch, Winnie!! And, stay away from that other phony, manipulative little tramp, too!" You're better off without either one of them!"
