Dean Winchester 01-23-2006, 11:35 AM I hope this doesn't hurt the DVD sales the way Nick At Nite reportedly hurt Who's The Boss, I will be watching though
Dean Winchester 01-23-2006, 11:40 AM only thing I dislike about the episode list is that the last two seasons are almost non-existent here, the show was still good without Dolph Sweet (who passed away in 1985 in between seasons 4 and 5) and the last episode TV One's airing is the one dealing with his passing.
vashti1999 01-23-2006, 11:42 AM If it does join the regular lineup, I'll just be content watching on tv as opposed to buying the dvd set. Though I think running this marathon just days before the season 1 dvd release is good promotion for it.

that's what I was thinking, but I know a lot of people blame the low WTB sales on it premiering on N@N the same week, even though personally I'd think high exposure on a channel like N@N would boost sales (notice that the overplayed shows like Roseanne, Full House and Fresh Prince have greatly outsold the underplayed Murphy Brown and Who's The Boss).
At least TV One doesn't exactly have the N@N/TV Land style audience, Good Times was on TV One before TV Land and it didn't hurt the DVD one bit.
vashti1999 01-23-2006, 12:01 PM If it were two years ago, or maybe even 1 year ago, I'd get the set, but I've gone overboard with my collection so I've gone into a pick and choose mode and become more selective in what I'll buy. In that respect it'll be good to see at least a few episodes on TV One. I haven't watched GAB since the prime time airings.
Dean Winchester 01-23-2006, 06:50 PM I'm gonna record the season 2-5 episodes that TV One airs just in case they don't come out on DVD
Dean Winchester 01-23-2006, 06:51 PM 2:30pm Gimme A Break! Episode 110 "Nell's Ex" GS: Jay Johnson ("Soap")
so which one is Nell's ex... Chuck or Bob?
Wheeler Sloane 01-23-2006, 07:05 PM How come no episodes from season six?
Dean Winchester 01-23-2006, 07:08 PM How come no episodes from season six?
I wondered that too, I will NOT be watching any of the season 1 episodes on there because I am gonna get the DVD but I will tape the rest. There's too many season 1 episodes on there, I'd like to see some of the NYC episodes again
Wheeler Sloane 01-23-2006, 07:13 PM This is definite TV One material.
spunkygirl 01-23-2006, 07:14 PM This is great, I'm def. watching :D
Does TV One air their shows uncut?
Wheeler Sloane 01-23-2006, 07:17 PM I don't notice any edits on their shows.
Pavan 01-23-2006, 07:33 PM so which one is Nell's ex... Chuck or Bob?
lol, if I recall, Jay Johnson played a ventriliquist in the episode. So I guess Bob, lol.
Wheeler Sloane 01-23-2006, 08:43 PM Wasn't her ex's named Tony (played by Ben Powers; aka Keith Albert "KA/Kool-Aid" Anderson from the sixth and final season of Good Times)? I can't remember.
- Wheeler

Pavan 01-25-2006, 01:00 AM Gimme a Break! will not be joining the lineup. It is just a marathon. See the Gimme a Break! board for details.
Dean Winchester 02-11-2006, 01:36 PM just a reminder that it's on.
I think these are syndicated prints, plus, the pilot looked very faded and dirty and "old" looking (well, it was 25 years ago) compared to how the same episode looked on DVD

I doubt TV One will air the episodes edited. Time the episodes. They should be 24-25 min, without commercials.
Dean Winchester 02-11-2006, 01:53 PM yea, I think later on, I might compare one of the season 1 episodes on DVD next to the same episode on TV One, My computer and TV screen aren't too far apart that if usually you can see them synchronized together so it's easy to pick up the "edited" footage, I've done it before if I knew in advance the episodes that are coming on.
spunkygirl 02-11-2006, 01:56 PM Watching it right now :D
The episodes look good to me, they don't look grainy or anything.
TVJunkie101 02-11-2006, 03:05 PM I'm loving the marathon! It's been years since I saw Gimme a Break! The episodes are hilarious. If I had any hesitation getting the set on DVD, there's none now. I'm definitely getting S1 on DVD.
Scoobiedoo30 02-11-2006, 03:35 PM I wish I could watch The Gimme A Break Marathron but we do not have Digital Cable Right now I hope that TV One re-airs The Gimme A Break Marathron in April or May of 2006
Dean Winchester 02-11-2006, 04:39 PM hopefully the positive responces to it on TV One will whet everyones appetite for Tuesday :) I am hoping that with how well Universal is treating their 80's dramas on DVD, that they will follow suit and treat their 80's sitcoms decently too. I remember watching GAB all the time when I was little (along with DS, FOL and shows like The A-Team and Knight Rider) and it's nice to revisit it as an adult and still be able to enjoy it.
TVFactFan 02-11-2006, 04:47 PM Just forgot how wild this show was-lol Samantha just called Nell a NIG*** and ran out the house What the Hell is going on?-lol
Brian Damage 02-11-2006, 04:48 PM It is wonderful to get reaquainted with this show. It was very good.
friendsfan77 02-11-2006, 05:55 PM man, I'm so jealous... I wish I had that channel. :(
seventies_sitcoms 02-11-2006, 06:22 PM Just forgot how wild this show was-lol Samantha just called Nell a NIG*** and ran out the house What the Hell is going on?-lol
Well I can't watch the show because stupid sports have to be on TV all day.
Did they show the one yet when they go to Alabama for the funeral of Nell's father?
spunkygirl 02-11-2006, 06:35 PM Yeah they showed that one :)
I haven't seen this show in so long, it's great to be able to relive it again. I hope TV One adds it to the lineup.
vashti1999 02-11-2006, 07:58 PM I'm loving the marathon!

It's better than what I remembered but I'm still not so sure I'll get the dvd. I forgot how funny Nell Carter was on the show. I'm glad she at least got a couple of Emmy nominations.

Well I will just record these eps since I have only 1 ep in my collection.
vashti1999 02-11-2006, 10:57 PM Well I will just record these eps since I have only 1 ep in my collection.
That goes without saying. I've recorded them too.
Dean Winchester 02-11-2006, 11:13 PM I recorded all the season 2-6 episodes.
I forgot how bad the last season was. They should've ended GAB in 1986 and just made the new show a spinoff because what GAB was in the 86-87 was not at all the same show it was established as in the 81-86.
spunkygirl 02-11-2006, 11:56 PM Yeah that last season was bad. It wasn't the same without the girls. You're right they should have just used the last season as a spinoff or something.
Dean Winchester 02-12-2006, 12:02 AM yep. I don't think the last season was so awful per se, as that it just wasn't Gimme A Break. When a show is in its sixth season, it's too established to pull a Facts Of Life/Different World drastic change like that. Those shows got away with it because they were both relatively new when they shook things up.
If the girls and Officer Simpson had moved to NYC with Nell, maybe the last season would've felt more like it, but if anything, Season 6 was a failed spinoff IMO.
spunkygirl 02-12-2006, 12:09 AM Personally I don't think the show was the same once Dolph Sweet passed on, but the season after he passed wasn't too bad.
Dean Winchester 02-12-2006, 12:13 AM Personally I don't think the show was the same once Dolph Sweet passed on, but the season after he passed wasn't too bad.
yea, I agree. I couldn't get over how bad he looked in the last episode of season 4 (his final episode), he was always a stocky, commanding guy, and there he looked like walking death, which unfortunately, he was :(
Mr. Television 02-12-2006, 12:20 AM I read that NBC forced those changes onto the producers. The show wasn't the same without the girls.
spunkygirl 02-12-2006, 12:22 AM Yeah Dolph did look bad in later in Season 4 :( I cried during "Joey's Train" episode. I'm such a sap
TVJunkie101 02-12-2006, 08:56 AM The last season was pretty bad. The show should of ended at 5 seasons. The show wasn't the same without the girls.
vashti1999 02-12-2006, 08:12 PM I doubt TV One will air the episodes edited. Time the episodes. They should be 24-25 min, without commercials.
I'm working backwards transferring them from hard drive to disc. The last 5 episodes of the marathon (Katie's College, Baby of the Family, Friendship, Joey's Train, I Love New York) were all just over 22 minutes.
TVFactFan 02-12-2006, 08:15 PM I wonder if this means that TV One will start airing all shows edited since it's going on 3 years that the channel has been in existence
Brieannas21 02-12-2006, 11:45 PM Gimme A Break aired here about a yr and some months ago on a local station(doesn't air here anymore). And TvOne episodes didn't look any different then on my local station. The only thing that I could catch was in Nell's Ex, when Tony was singing his song, he sung a lot longer on the TvOne version.
Pavan 02-12-2006, 11:46 PM It is quite possible, Universal gave them syndicated prints since TV One has no plans to air the series as a regular.
TV Land aired episodes for their shows uncut when they first premiered, but that eventually changed when they started getting advertisers. I think it was the same thing for TV One. They didn't have many advertisers or know their ratings at the start, so they aired stuff unedited. Now, they seem to be just like Nick at Nite or TV Land and have a lot of commercials.
One of our reviewers, skees53, timed all the episodes at 22 minutes. Time to buy those unedited DVD sets!
Michael72581 02-15-2006, 01:25 AM Since I am always interested in seeing new TV shows, I watched a few episodes of "Gimme A Break!" on Saturday on TVOne and im sorry to say, I really did not like the show and do not plan on purchasing the Season One DVD set. It was too serious and too depressing most of the time and I really did not find Nell Carter's character funny at all. The chief was very bitter most of the time and his daughters were in a sad mood most of the time. People claim this show is so funny, but I ask myself two questions "How is this show funny?" and "Is this a sitcom or a drama?". The show is just as bad as "Good Times" because both shows are too serious and too depressing.

There were many funny episodes, for example
When Nell tries to sell vacuum cleaners
When Nell takes on the Phone company
When Grandpa accidentally robs the bank
When the Chief dates a woman for the first time after his wife died
When Andy Gibb comes to town and the chief almost arrest him
When we first met Addy (Nell's very best friend)
When Simpsons cat runs away (The live show)
There are many funny episodes, it so happen that they picked some serious episodes to air during the Marathon. Gimme A Break was a great show, along with Good Times.

Well we have to see if that starting happening with Good Times

With five of the six seasons of GT on dvd, it doesn't matter what TV One does to them.
TVFactFan 02-15-2006, 07:56 PM With five of the six seasons of GT on dvd, it doesn't matter what TV One does to them.
Well it will matter to someone who hasn't recorded the TV ONE versions of Good Times because those versions are better than the DVD eps.
ThomasE 02-16-2006, 12:45 AM I just ordered mine through amazon. I got it for a pretty low price along with Archie Bunker's Place.
TennX 02-17-2006, 12:01 AM damn it! I completely forgot about the marathon. I really wanted to see those later episodes since I don't really remember the first 2 seasons. Hopefully they'll do another one soon.
