In the episode where they make the movie, as Gilligan and Skipper are diving to salvage things from the ship, Mr.Howell and Professer are on a raft and Howell makes a reference to his pool at home and Professer says, "it must have been a very large pool." Mr.Howell then says, "Large? Last year we had a hurricane ......" What else does he say? I can make out the words "spawn" and "diving board" but thats all.

Mr. Howell says:

"Large? Last year we had a hurricane...(????)...of course, a couple of Japanese fishermen...and the salmon went up the diving board to spawn."

I listened to it a dozen times, twice with my ear to the speaker and I can't figure out what word he said at the (????).

I was pleased, however, to discover that it was also completely missed by the people who did the subtitles. ;)

I was going to say the same thing. The subtitles did not help at all. Now I really wonder what he said.

Hey gilligan fanatic that is a great picture. If its a screen capture, its the clearest one I've seen. Anyway, I'm glad I"m not the only one who can't tell what he said , but I still want to know what he said, I've been wondering for years.

It sounds like he says hurricane M or maybe Em. Maybe one's a category and the other perhaps a name of a storm from that era.

thanks, its off of the DVD

I think Ph1! might be right about it being a huricane from the 60's

I don't think he says the name of a storm...

...he may have said "...in, of course,..." to imply that the whole hurricane could fit within the pool, or it might have just been a noise like "hmmm" or "uh."

If the script is out there, it may help---but Jim Backus was so prone to ad libbing, it may have never been scripted!

No. It sounds like a definite word because of the "of course" that follows. You wouldn't say hmmm or grunt and then say of course. At least I don't think you would. :)

He definitely says "M, of course". I tried to Google Hurricane M, Emme, and Emma. There was a Hurricane Emma, but was in 1971. I think Jim was making up the name of a hurricane to make his dialogue a little more chatty and realistic sounding.
