View Full Version : New Bad Trader Scam
savageamusement 01-17-2006, 08:55 AM I have received quite a few complaints as of lately.
Not your typical complaints either.
It seems there is a new breed of trader manipulation going on.
From 6 different users, within 4 different sites, and 6 different trades-
This is the basic idea I am getting.
Trade 1 sets up a trade with trader 2
Trader one askes to be shipped to first, but offers to over compensate
by a few discs.
Trader 2 ships.
Trader one complains about the quality.
And sends the items back- being put off and upset.
Trade one, coincedentially adds the same media that was poor- to their
list.
In otherwords, for the cost of shipping items BACK, they are borring
and copying the media themselves.
Now while loaning might be an option, the simple fact is under this
concept, it is manipulation.
The second trader is left with nothing for their time, and an extra
set of items, they will now need, if they can find a user to take
them, ship again.

so that we know who is pulling that scam? :(
savageamusement 01-17-2006, 10:38 AM Since it is 6 different people, complaining about 6 different people.
All whom have no complaints previous-
I don't feel at this time I have the right to out the situation.
Some are still trying to resolve it, and I could put a thorn in someones side.
None, NONE of the 6 complaints are users on this board, which was why I felt comfortable mentioning it.
Tho they are not users here, I know many users trade elsewhere.
So as it is not a common ploy, I felt it worth mentioning.
I have also, of course urged each trader upon all attempts failing to resolve- to post their situation.

sugar ray 01-18-2006, 03:11 AM savageamusement:
just checked out the savage trading site for the first time this evening.
well layed out! like it! love it! hopefully other HONEST traders hop on board
bets regards:wave:
Dragonbear 01-18-2006, 03:31 AM One of the things about trading is that it's not just a division of
the items and sharing. But it's also usually a matter of a division of
labor as well. I want a copy of what you have, you want a copy
of what I have. Which is why I've seen trades most of the time
being 1x1 and disc for disc. sometimes 2x1 etc.
Now, for an experienced person, sometimes that might change depending
on hardware issues. I know from savage that she has some people who
loan her they're masters to copy and send back. Same thing with savage
sometimes loaning out hers. but that's after a very long trusted relationship
has been built.
Returning of items that don't work happens. That Dvd deal at the local
cheapmart wasn't so much of a deal when the discs don't burn well
or don't play. But as with anything in this hobby. People can take
advantage of good nature way to much.
loren 01-18-2006, 01:10 PM this method of stealing ahs been going on since i started with dvd trades
peopel make a deal, and since both colelctors are on the same level, they supposedly ship at the same time
well they have 40 excuses why theirs didnt go out, sand they have mine for a month,
i ask for the 7th time about shipping and they play the --YOUR RUDE--card on me, and say they will return my stuff since im too rude to deal with
then of course, oh i mad e adeal with another person and i get these from them --to put on my list
another one
we both send and of course mine get there and they arent very good--to their email anyway--and they want to return them and get another set thats the same quality rate
well now they have truned their 20 disc trade in to a 40 disc to them trade while giving up 20
this happened a few times as well
another one
of cousre the old, total switch-a-roo
lets say i send batman and of course they cant paly any of the discs and ask for replacements on father knows best
this was tried on me about a dozen times as well
hello--i keep records
i do know what was sent
or a variation on the same one
i asked for batman and you sent father knows,
and in reality they didnt ask for batman, but for father knows
thanks goodness i have purged almost all that garbage from my trade activities
i took some lessons and had quite a few stings
its just part of the process
yes there are scamemrs, thieves and all that out there
but there are also honest, quick, and decent people to swap with as well
weed them out, and once you find some good ones, enjoy the fun of tv shows
Lamont 01-18-2006, 01:41 PM I have been scammed in a similar way
THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED
this was last year, when i was still pretty new to trading
i had a trader that I had a trade with once before THAT TRADE WAS A MESS ON BOTH OUR ENDS and I should have steared clear
BUT I took a chance and regretted it
this trader and I had made a deal WE WOULD BOTH SHIP OUT THE SAME DAY about 60 discs each
WELL I shipped my 3 sets to them, They did not do so because OF COURSE They had to go "Out of town" on business and a relative was supposed to mail for them
2 weeks later they email and say 2 of the 3 sets u sent are junk and i wont trade for them I will only take set # 3 BUTTTTTT i need a redo on disc #25 first
They agreed to send the other 2 sets back and their stuff
I SENT the redo disc THEY SENT NOTHING
And of course< I saw this person SELLING the 3 sets I had sent on ebay OVER AND OVER AND OVER, like 15 copies of each set in a month for $100 a pop! when i asked about this, they FIRST denied it was them, and later
they admitted that was them but said they had gotten TOTALLY DIFFERENT SETS OF BOTH SHOWS from some other trader (WINK WINK!)
so i emailed and of course they were OUT OF TOWN again, and would ship asap once they got home
NEVER SENT A SINGLE DISC or my discs back, EVEN THOUGH I HAD INCLUDED $10 money order to cover it
WORST THING IS this person, is a trader on many boards, who has friends that would quickly defend him EVEN THOUGH HE 100% ripped me off
so what can i do about it?
i let it go, BUT i will not forget and what goes around......
Lamont 01-18-2006, 01:47 PM plus u get scammer/scumbags like SUE MAPLES aka woman of many names
who send you HORRIBLE STUFF and expect u to swap for it
SUE MAPLES (or her evil sister) asked me to do a trade for DIFFERENT STROKES complete and some smaller stuff, odds and ends, ANYHOW she drug it out for MONTHS and sent me a batch of discs which almost 1/2 of them were blank or defective, then sent me another batch, STILL MANY BAD ONES and finally months later sent me the rest, and i checked them all 1. it was NOT complete, missing 1/2 dozen eps, and 2. quality was USELESS, 5 of 10 at best
so when i told her i would ONLY send her a # of discs to equal the usable fill ins she gets attitude
I MEAN SHE IS ALLREADY ON THE BAD TRADER LIST and then threatens me? get real :(
konnann1996 01-18-2006, 01:57 PM I saw this person SELLING the 3 sets I had sent on ebay OVER AND OVER AND OVER, like 15 copies of each set in a month for $100 a pop!
How do they get away with that? I thought eBay were sticklers when it came to copyright laws
Lamont 01-18-2006, 02:52 PM well if u look on ebay u will see literally tens of thousands of home made dvd sets
u will also see tons of asian bootlegs of storebought dvds
ebay is stricter than most sights and does cancel a lot of auctions
and some titles more than others
but still, the majority of them are still there
Lamont 01-18-2006, 02:54 PM I didnt care one bit that this trader was selling a set he got from me
Once I send a set off the person can do what he wants with it
I JUST GOT MAD b/c 1. he lied and said the set was unusable junk, when he was making $1000s off of it
and 2. he lied and said he was out of town, when he was obviously able to ship to his BUYERS but not to me
and 3. he lied and NEVER EVER EVER sent me what he owed me
bad bad bad
:(
RedWhine56 01-18-2006, 03:26 PM How do they get away with that? I thought eBay were sticklers when it came to copyright laws
They are if they know about it. If the ad states the show is bootleg (which most do not!) and it's a current show, such as the Bewitched movie, obviously, the ad would be pulled (if someone at Ebay KNOWS about it, since they can't monitor all auctions all the time.) But if someone was actually doing this, they'd be stupid to say it was bootleg & so there is no automated way to determine if the auction is for a bootleg copy or a legit copy that someone bought & viewed & decided to get rid of, which is perfectly legal.
The older shows from the 50's-80's are a bit of a grey area. Some of those programs (supposedly) have become public domain and some have not. (Depends upon if the copyright holder renewed the copyright or something like that...I think.)
Also, many of the large companies that own copyrights to shows have joined the VERO program & have their own people monitor Ebay ads. If a Vero person reports the auction, it's pretty much ended, no questions asked. Some Vero folks get a bit greedy & end auctions they really shouldn't & you can fight this...but it's not easy.

savageamusement 01-20-2006, 08:04 AM I have noticed it also depends on how they state it.
verbage.
instead of copied movie
;)
"Bought at a convention"
Sold as collector to collector only
"no authentic markings, but I think its retail
"given as a gift, never viewed it.
:D
Etc.
If you dont say its a copy, they may skim over it- as a lot of times they feed in words like Copied, dubbed etc
The other factor is, its a HUGE board, with a ton of things being posted every minute.
I know how hard it is to get retail and sale ads of here.
I can't imagine tackling Ebay.
