Unfortunately, there's no way of knowing. The only thing to do is to keep writing, writing, writing to FOX at the address given above, and encourage others to write. And remember that even if they do decide to take the hint, it would take quite a bit of time before they could actually release it (because of rights issues, remastering, clearing music issues, etc). The key words are "persistence" and "patience."

i don't know about this.
i've been disappointed by some of the wkrp tapes that have been released.
i noticed on the special christmas edition of wkrp in cincinnati the tape says uncut but
i noticed at least two minutes were cut from
"a date with jennifer" and just as bad the tape was in ep speed mode.
the quality of wkrp tapes released so far have been subpar!

that my opinion!

I agree with you 100% about those tapes. Isn't that all the more reason why we should write to FOX (which now owns the rights to WKRP) and ask them for a really good, comprehensive, uncut collection?

So if you want more and better WKRP on video, make sure you write a letter to:

Why just DVD? Not everybody owns a DVD player. Why not VHS and DVD? http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/quest.gif

The reason is that Fox is releasing some TV series in season-by-season boxes on DVD, like The X-Files and soon The Simpsons, while they have more or less stopped releasing TV episodes on VHS. So it makes more sense to focus on DVD in the campaign, because that's what they're focusing on. However, I believe I mentioned VHS in one of my letters to Fox.

NO,BECAUSE EPISODES OF THE NEW WKRP IN CINCINNATI ARE NOT IN THE SAME SYNDICATION PACKAGE AS THE ORIGINAL WKRP IN CINCINNATI.

Good news and bad news, as the old saying goes. There was an online chat tonight with Peter Staddon, the head of home video for FOX, and when I asked him about shows from MTM productions, here's the first thing he replied:

"WKRP would be a great release -- if only we could afford the music clearance rights!"

In other words, they are interested in releasing the show, but what's holding it up is that it would cost so much to keep the original music (and, wisely, they wouldn't want to release it without the real music).

There is hope, though. Staddon said that FOX will release the M*A*S*H TV series on DVD in the near future, and that they'll use that as a test to see whether classic TV shows can sell well on DVD. So if M*A*S*H sells very well, it might prove to FOX that there's a market for older TV series, and then they might decide that WKRP could recoup the cost of music licensing.

I know this isn't what you wanted to hear; it's not what I wanted to hear either. But it's good to know that Fox has at least been considering WKRP. Alas, music rights are just murderously expensive when it comes to home video, and that's what's holding it up.

My advice? If you haven't written to FOX, then write. Talk to your friends who haven't written, and get them to write. The more letters they get, the better chance there'll be that FOX will decide it's worth the expense of putting WKRP on home video. It can still happen. Just don't expect it to happen immediately. I think our best hope is 2003, because that will mark the 25th anniversary of the series, and FOX might decide to release something as a tie-in with that anniversary.

Again, keep writing, be patient, and did I mention keep writing?

I'm happy to hear if fox does release all 90 episodes of wkrp in cincinnati on dvd. they will release it with original music.i think a 25th anniversary boxset of wkrp in cincinnati is a great idea.
i'm predicting the m*a*s*h and the simpsons season by season boxsets will be both be best sellers encouraging fox to release most of the mtm shows.

So, who actually "owns" the original uncut, unedited, music intact taped episodes of WKRP or do they even exist anymore? http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/quest.gif

Kathy

The original tapes almost certainly exist -- Fox has reportedly been doing some restoration work on the MTM shows, so they presumably have access to the original master tapes.

The shows do exist with the original music; it's just that they can't be shown with all the original music unless Fox expends the time and money to license all the songs for broadcast.

I would like for wkrp in cincinnati to be released on its 25th anniversary date with the original music.

If the studio can pay gazillions for its new prime time shows, they can easily afford to license the original run music for WKRP.
It sounds like they are being diplomatic
about not wanting to pump any money into an old show.

In syndication, commericals are so cheap that local law ofices can buy 20 spots per ep and not feel a pinch. A DVD release of even just season one probably wouldn't generate enough money for the business types to get the coveted thousand fold return on their investment. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif

Idea:

Send a letter to Fox stating that you just purchased uncut seasons one and two on ebay from a chinese seller for $750.

It's possible they might believe this and rush to release it, fearing
someone else is making money.
