View Full Version : Who's Your Favorite: Jennifer or Bailey?

This question is almost as important to WKRP as "Ginger Or Mary Ann?" is to Gilligan's Island. Whom do you prefer, blond bombshell Jennifer Marlowe or shy ingenue Bailey Quarters?

My own answer is Bailey, especially starting in the second season or so when she got more confidence and started to dress more flatteringly.

Is there any question, Bailey of course!!!

Definitely Bailey!

------------------
"Well, Laverne is sort of childish"

"Childish? Childish? COming from a grown woman who throws tea parties for her stuffed cat!"

"Well at least I don't sew L's on everything I wear!"

"Well that would be pretty stupid considering your name's Shirley!"

Janet: "I did not kiss Larry!"
Chrissy: "Snort snort."
Mr. Roper: "Not tonight Helen, I got a headache."
Mrs. Roper: "Not tonight. That would be a good title for my autobiagraphy."
Mr. Furley: "Once a tippytoes, always a tippytoes."
Cindy: "I guess I messed things up, huh?"
Terri: "Janet? Shut up and get married."

Jennifer ditzy and airy??? No way!!!

Jennifer is the epitome of the modern woman - strong, independent, smart AND pretty, to boot! Granted, she sometimes relies on her looks to get what she wants, but everybody that knows WKRP and the character of Jennifer should know that she doesn't HAVE to use her looks! Remember, she did master several foreign languages!!!

BAILEY.....hands down.
She is less of a stereotype of a pretty woman; she uses her brains to get places in life, not just her looks. Also, I just like her personality more.

Bailey in my eye's is by far more desireable, exactly what I'd want to marry. She's way more beautiful without even knowing it, smart, sweet and down to earth, and I think a much nicer body, but I'm the type not stuck on a womans breat size either, and L@@K, she is quite built herself, but she's built perfect to me.
Not to knock Loni, she's very beautiful, but to me she carry's that same undesireable whatever it is that makes her seem fake the same way I think Pamela Anderson gets wayyy too much attention. I can think of a million girls far more appealing then Pamela, I don't think she's all that great.
The best part is, Jan Smithers (Bailey) "is" in real life a hell of a great person from any article or anything you can read about her or her interviews, or what others have had to say about her.

AND my sister even named one of her daughters after Bailey Quarters!!!!!WHAT A WOMAN!!

Well that alone deserves a reply.

Wow this board is dead. Anybody still around?

I never posted on this topic.
I'd have to say that I prefer Bailey in the sense of the type of woman I like and whom I find more attractive.

But as far as their characters on WKRP, Jennifer is the better character for many reasons. Smart, quick, manipulative, funny, and all around more defined. Bailey is just nice and shy with not much edge or enough distinguishing features to her. And not much dialogue either though she did get about 6 episodes centered around her.

Jennifer is an integral part of the show.
If you got rid of Bailey the show would not be nearly as affected as if you got rid of Jennifer.

But like I said, Jan Smithers is much more attractive in my opinion.

i agree with everything you said.
jennifer and johnny were the most important characters on wkrp and the most unreplaceable.

i'll come back to this board when more people do.
i would like for wkrp in cincinnati to run on tvland in the timeslot after sanford and son that would get this board cooking again.

The reason why I like Jennifer better is...
That she was knew how to stand on her own ground and also she knew how to handle men innuendos..Bailey was way too passive for me to enjoy her character, though, I do agree that Bailey was more beautiful, in a natural sense, compared to Jennifer..But Jennifer had moxie while Bailey was a major push over

I really like both charcters. When I first watched the show, I was more into Jennifer but now I've turned the Bailey corner and find her more attractive. Especially the 2nd half of "Filthy Pictures", she looks so amazing in the purple skirt and hat. Yeow.
Really piercing eyes too.

I think both charcters are great. I don't agree that Jennifer didn't contribute anything to the show. I think the Ask Arlene episode and the one with Hoyt Axton prove otherwise. Also she was the voice of reason to Mr. Carlson alot of the time.

Bailey is my favorite female charter on the show. I love how her character developed over time. At first she was very shy and was barely noticable, by season 2 she slowly started to get more involved but still was content to hide behind her big pair of glasses. By season three she had more or less come out of her shell and was able to stand up for herself. My writing prof says that's called a charcter arc when that kind of thing happens, a charcter changing over time.

I agree. Really, Jennifer never did it for me. And I think she would've looked much better as a brunette.

Jennifer Marlowe, to me, was the last of the "smart" blondes on television. But at the same time, she always struck me as the very kind of woman that scares men away. From her too-perfect hair to her too-perfect manners (you will notice that she always had the "right" response for everything and didn't hesitate to let you know it), she is the perfect example of the beautiful yet unattainable woman that I call "the Ice Queen." You couldn't have fun with her without messing up her hair or her attitude!

Now Bailey Quarters was as glamorous as, say, a Raggedy Ann doll. Now don't get me wrong--she was pretty in her own way--but she was the kind of girl who was eager to do something, to make things happen, but she kept that fire stoked under a girl-next-door image. She wasn't afraid to make mistakes, and she cared about people in a way that I don't think Jennifer ever did. Of the two, I would have chosen Bailey...and I think there could have been an interesting episode had "Raggedy Ann" Bailey had gotten closer to her "Raggedy Andy" Travis....

BTW: Early publicity for "WKRP" showed a picture of a brunette Loni Anderson, circa 1969, in a commercial for Pillsbury Hungry Jack pancake mix. Don't think she would have made as much of an impression as a brunette Jennifer Marlowe, however....

I truly can't imagine anyone not finding Loni Anderson attractive. I believe a lot of people think there's something noble in picking Jan over Loni. And I'd take Mary Anne over Ginger too. I don't see them as parallel choices.

I haven't watched WKRP in years but I always preferred Jennifer. Bailey was too wholesome and shy. Pretty but in a nerdy way. Jennifer was confident , outgoing, went after what she wanted, outspoken, smart, nice and of course had the looks.

Now in the real world it would be smarter to hook up with Bailey because Jennifer would want a rich guy and Bailey would be easier to please.lol

Somebody else recently argued on r/sitcoms (https://www.reddit.com/r/sitcoms/comments/1gnodnt/comment/lwcauyo/) that Jennifer's sculpted platinum helmet on WKRP was a significant factor in the whole "Bailey's actually hotter" thing.
