So many people used to say the Romano apartment was crowded, dingy, and grimy. I never thought it was that bad. It looked like it might've been an older building and the apartments had been remodled some throughout the years. You had those old looking 50's/60's looking green kitchen cabinets mixing in with 70's looking orange countertops. I didn't think they lived in a decrepit building. Actually their old home in the opening credits didn't look all that great or big.

The girls' bedroom looked smaller and crowded than I remember it being when I was kid, and I thought that little room behind the couch was a little bit bigger too.

Believe me, I seen a lot of worse dumps than the Romano apartment building. I wonder what was up with that diamond motif?

To be honest, I didn't find the apartment all that bad.

I didn't think it was anything special, but it wasn't a total dive like the Kramdens' flat on The Honeymooners or the Evans' apartment on Good Times.

I though their apartment looked fine.

Only the last show when Ann was moving to England. Ann And Barbara sat in the window seat and reminisced! ;)

Another time, Barbara sat there for a minute to yell down to some boys that were beeping their horns out side for her in an ep where she was pretending to be a "bad girl"! :D And when President Ford was coming to town and Schneider said his motorcade would be driving down their street, they all were in there and were looking out the window. Other than that , nobody was ever seen in there.:confused: And it was really cute and had furniture and everything! Perfect little alcove to sit in on a Saturday morning with a cup of coffee! ;)

WOW!! Someone sure took a lot of thought putting all that together!!! :eek: I always wondered about the two bedrooms? It didn't seem like the apt. would have enough room for them? I figured one would be right behind the kitchen, but it would have to be really small! :confused:

Regarding that youtube video...I don't know whether to be impressed or concerned. Since the person stuck to the early years, I wonder if he or she was too afraid to figure out how Alex's room would fit in to an already confusing layout.

I still have green kitchen cabinets! :( No orange anywhere though.:)

And just this year I got rid of my avocado colored refrigerator from 1966! I was holding off until I did a total renovation, but it was dying.

Which was redone with modern touches when series "Small Wonder" moved into the exact same soundstage after the Romano's left.

In watching some of The Runaways this weekend, I noticed the doorway to the bedrooms hallway had double closing doors, which Barbara closed. That was new to me. Can't recall another time it was there.

And regarding the alcove , after watching ODAAT two rounds now. I noticed two other times that it was in use! ;) One time Julie sat in that area by the window with her leg up! I think she twisted her ankle or something! And her and Max had a bed set up in there and slept back there when they all moved back in that time (Julie, Max, Barbara and Mark)! :) ;)

Also I noticed last night in that flea bag hotel Julie and Chuck lived in had a bay window with a window seat!!! LOL!!!:eek: I thought that was kind of strange for a run down place like that! :confused: Norman Lear must have had a thing for window seats ! :D

And apparently Kokomo is famous for having the best coffee shop in the state of Indiana and also has a skid row section too!!! :lol:

I think, but I'm not 100% sure? The doors were between the hallway and the living room? All I remember was when Julie called from the hotel payphone and Barbara answered she closed those doors so Ann wouldn't hear! And I was thinking, where the heck did those doors suddenly come from????? :eek: :confused: :crazy:

Those double doors might have been a prop the stage crew put in to serve a purpose for just that one episode, then were removed. That's my theory anyway as to why the doors weren't seen again.

It's kind of icky by today's standards, but it was the epitome of middle class, middle 70's, real estate. Many sitcoms were switching to video at the time and brighter colors could be easily overwhelming to viewers if the lighting person didn't know what they were doing.

I also felt that Archie Bunker's house, Laverne & Shirley's Milwaukee apartment, and the Kotter's apartment were also beige eye sores.

Regarding the avocado green appliances, they were still newish at the time of production. The early/mid seventies were a nightmare in terms of color and fashion. Harvest Gold, Avocado Green, and Burnt Orange were every where. There was no escape. #LestWeForget.

I was noticing yesterday before this scene came up. The doorway leading into the hallway seemed much wider than in other eps! :lol: And regarding the doors. Don't most double doors have doorknobs on both doors? They call them French doors I think? ;)

I know I really need to get a life! :lol: but the Romano apt. fascinates me!! ;) The little house that the girls and husbands rented too! Norman Lear really made both so detailed! :) It's like the more you watch, the more little cool things you notice!!! ;)

I LOVED Mary Tyler Moore's studio apt. That's another one that fascinates me!! I remember as a little girl watching, that was the first time I ever saw a sofa bed and thought that was the neatest thing ever!!! "Mom, LOOK!!!! Her couch pulls out into a BED"!!!!!!! :eek:

Oh, so that's why she moved!

We never got to see any of her new neighbors though!

I didn't like the new apt. AT ALL either!!!! At that point I didn't watch MTM on a regular basis anyway! To me with Rhoda and Phyllis both gone I was losing interest!:( And the straw that broke the camel's back for me was Mary moving out of her adorable, quaint little studio apt. !!!:( I was DONE!!!!! :mad: And of course at that point too I was older and out doing stuff with friends or talking on the phone ,listening to music in my room not hanging out in the living room with my parents anymore watching TV anyway!!! :D

Even now, when METV started showing MTM I didn't even bother watching the later season eps!!!;)

That's a great read, and I'd forgotten that part of it. Wow, Sandrich was a brilliant director of this show, but he sure had a couple of flaws; he moved Mary out of her beloved unique apartment into a far less interesting one (if you're going to move her at least make the new place very interesting and worthy of the viewer's investment), and he also refused to let Rue McClanahan do her customized southern accent for Blanche in the pilot of The Golden Girls. Thank goodness he only directed the pilot for that series and not the rest of the show, or we would never have had all the outrageousness of Blanche that we did.

Yeah!! I wasn't that much into the Chuckles the clown ep! :( One thing I did like about the later eps. was Ted Bessell ( Donald Hollinger from That Girl) in a couple eps as Mary's boyfriend! I always liked him, and I do remember watching MTM later eps and seeing him! ;)
