i've seen alot of posts in the past few months from people who want to get rid of old vhs tapes that have been transferred onto dvd. some are looking to trade them and others will toss them out if nobody wants them. if you are stuck with tapes that you dont want, have you ever thought about giving them away to people that you know? Most people still have VCRs, in fact I dont know anyone in my town that has a dvd recorder. Even I dont have one and I am a trader , but I do buy commercial sets of tv shows to replace my VHS copies and then I just bring those to my workplace. I have always been able to get rid of unwanted tapes there and I know that some co-workers are always happy to see an old tv show that they used to watch a long time ago.

I also have a college friend who's 70 year-old mother loved to watch Dark Shadows 30 years ago. Since I was buying some of the DVD releases to upgrade on my old MPI tapes, I decided to send her what I was no longer needing (350 episodes so far) . From what my friend has told me , she is very happy to be able to see one of her favorite shows again. :crazy:

There are not just the trading groups or the garbage can where you can get rid of your tapes, and you might just make a few people pretty happy in the process. :)

ive posted a couple of times to make the old vhs sets available when i have them on dvd

for instance i think i put my bosom buddies tapes, spenser for hire and a few others on here to trade away

i hate to toss them and im sure someone will want them

I keep my VHS masters. I've heard too many reports of DVDs going bad after a period of time to get rid of the original tapes.

I have literally hundreds of video tapes ... and only dozens of DVDs. I intend to
keep my tapes until they wear out (or until I do; whichever comes first. Hah!)

I keep most VHS masters. The reason is simply because your ability to improve quality or fix flaws may improve in the future.

I would hate to toss out a VHS tape, and keep a mediocre quality DVD, when new technology some months later allows me to finally overcome the error. Most people make mediocre DVDs, especially if all they use is some regular VCR and a lower-grade DVD recorder (Panasonic and Philips are especially mediocre for recordings). If you truly have no more space for the tapes, give them to somebody who will take the time and care to make DVDs that look better than the tapes. Some VHS playback tech is expensive, some of it is still just being created. VHS to DVD is a rather new need, and tools to fix flaws are slowly being developed, while others have existed in the more-expensive broadcast industry for years. Once the tape is thrown out, the ability to improve quality disappeared with it.
