one of my friends who is a horror buff told me that they're planning a remake of "Manos : The Hands Of Fate" in 2006 to mark the 40th anniversary of the original. I seriously want to know, why?

This is not a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" but a "if it ain't fixed, don't break it". Manos is a super-cheap extremely cheesy horror movie from 1966 that became a camp classic thanks to Mystery Science Theater 3000. It's commonly regarded as the worst movie ever made (even worse than Plan Nine) and a remake is pointless. Are they going to try to make it scary, or cash in on it's camp appeal by making fun of it? Manos was directed on a cheap silent camera by a fertilizer salesman with film aspirations. Only three voices were actually used in the final movie. Also one of the films stars (the guy who played Torgo) committed suicide shortly before the films opening, rumor being he was that ashamed of the movie he had made that he couldn't live with the humiliation.

If you don't know. Manos tells the story of a husband, wife and daughter who get stranded when trying to go on a vacation into the house run by a satyr named Torgo, who takes care of the place while the master is away. The master is a Satanic being, with portraits of himself on the wall, and he has a number of wives. It's frankly one of the stupidest pieces of celluloid ever made and I am curious what a remake could possibly bring to the table.

Oh God indeed.

Unless they're going to do a straight up parody of the film (ala Scary Movie) I see no reason whatsoever why they should remake Manos.

The episode of MST3K involving Manos was a classic. Arguably the most horrible film they ever roasted.

have you ever seen the movie? lol. Talking about it is one thing, but watching it is another... you will laugh so hard at it.

I honestly do think a decent horror movie could be made if they use the storyline but actually have decent writing... but still, why tamper with this POS? the reason it's so legendary is because it's so awful.

I have never seen it; but after reading abt it, I think I would want to watch it just to see how horrible it really is. LOL

Seriously, you don't want to do that. "Manos" isn't one of those movies that's so bad it's good, like "Showgirls."

Manos is a horribly made low budget flick with no redeeming values whatsoever.

You have been warned.

That's true, and the MST3K guys really milked the Torgo character for some laughs, but even the MST writers admit that "Manos" was one of the worst movies they ever based a show on.

Sounds like a dumb idea, unless they plan on making it into a laugh-out-loud parody of the original piece-o-crap movie...

isn't the original movie enough of a parody in and of itself?

They'll remake anything in Hollywood to save the time of writing it.

This is so very true... no one wants to take time and spend money on new, creative ideas...

I don't like the whole "let's take a classic movie and update it to todays audience" idea that goes on with horror these days. I have The Fog (1980) on DVD, it suffices for me, why do I need to see a remake of it just because it has a WB star in the lead?

I have heard rumors about a Halloween remake, and to me that is just wrong. Yes, Halloween is almost thirty years old but at the same time it's a timeless horror classic that continues to remain popular. Why the hell do we need a remake of the movie to make it "fresh" to todays teens? We saw how bad the Psycho remake was.

However, House Of Wax wasn't that bad, because it was the rare "remake" that really only had a little in common with the original, and took things into another direction and really only shared the "wax statues" and title with the original, as opposed to Amityville Horror where there's no real difference between the 1979 and 2005 versions.

I really hope they don't do this, and ruin this classic!
