View Full Version : Why did your parent(s) name you...
Ireneparalegal 12-30-2005, 10:47 PM the name you were given?
Also for those who have kids, how did you come abt the names you gave them?
I was named after my mother.
I named my eldest daughter (Nina) after a girl I saw on television when I was seven years old! I found the name to be very unique and interesting. When I met and married my husband and I became pregnant, I told him the name and he said "No". But then one day after work he said he changed his mind and liked the name. She also has the same name as an old soap opera character that I loved way back in the early 80's on All My Children. But initially her name came to me when I was 7 years old. That's real early finding a baby name!:D
My youngest daughter is named after my ex-husband's mother. I didn't want to name her Jennie, but he won out this time. It took me a real long time to call her by her name, because I couldn't stand my husband's mother.
My little boy is named after Stevie Ray Vaughan, the late blues musician.
my name is melissa because of melissa gilbert, my mom really liked little house
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 12-30-2005, 11:01 PM Im named Crystal because my mother wanted a name that went with Bell. She wanted to name me Liberty or Betsy Ross [shes very patriotic!!], but thankfully my Dad said NO.
As for my future kids, my daughters will be named Madison Eva and Brooklyn [Brooke for short], for my love for NYC. My sons will be named Chris and Craig. Chris is my favorite name and I like C names.
KristinHerreraFan 12-30-2005, 11:04 PM My mom decided Travis for me because she had a crush on this really hott guy named "Travis" on the Soap Opera she used to watch.

Thank God your dad put his foot down!!!:D
Number 9 Dream 12-30-2005, 11:08 PM Cool thread  :D Anyway, I seem to recall asking my Mom why they named me Kristel, and I remember her saying it was because I had crystal blue eyes at birth (and still do, obviously). My parents just decided to make it a unique spelling and give me some flair :D My full name in Estonian translates to "Pure Running Brooks"
My brother Kalin has a unique reasoning to his name-- my Dad is a huge fan of reading fantasy type books, and a character in the novel was named Kalin. So, there ya go. Everyone in my family is named with a "K" (except for my Dad, whose name is Aarne).
If I have kids, I want my boy to be named John after the two most important people in my life-- John Lennon and John Ritter. I was thinking of either doing John Paul____ or John Lennon____. This is definitely something I'm going to do, whether my future husband likes it or not!
For girls, I like the names Kayla (following the tradition of "K's"...and I just really love the name), Madison (for no other reason except it's unique and pretty all at once), and Alexandria ('cause I like A names).
EmoJoe 12-30-2005, 11:08 PM My dad named me after him.
Dumballa 12-30-2005, 11:12 PM Robert after me grandpap.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 12-30-2005, 11:12 PM Thank God your dad put his foot down!!!:D

rusyd 12-30-2005, 11:33 PM My parents named me Alexandra after my grandfather. It was that or Victoria, but my Dad didn't want a child of his named Vicky, so they went with Alex. Nice choice.

LOL - cute
PZelda 12-30-2005, 11:38 PM I almost became Valerie. That would've been kind of cool...because then I would have had the same name as Valerie Harper, one of my fave actresses.
Seriously...I don't remember why my parents gave me my name. Heh.
Courtnee 12-30-2005, 11:43 PM I was almost amanda.
Amanda nicole {lastname}

What if you have a boy? Percival? :D
robyrob 12-30-2005, 11:46 PM my name was a compromise - mom wanted "Russell" and dad wanted to name me after a family tradition. I am the first eldest son in at least 7 generations NOT named William.
apparently mine is the ONLY name they could both agree on.

Samuel Alexander. I love the name alexander :D
consentida 12-30-2005, 11:51 PM My mom named me Tara because of Gone With The Wind. I've yet to see the movie...
rusyd 12-30-2005, 11:52 PM LOL - cute
I hated my name for years. I have finally come to terms w it.
Hollow 12-30-2005, 11:55 PM my mom wanted sarah (from the bible) and my dad wanted susan so they agreed that my name would depend on my hair color; sarah if it was dark and susan if it was blonde. yeah it was really dark, almost black, but within the next year or two it went totally blonde and stayed that way.

Robin Williams! :D
Kazza 12-31-2005, 12:18 AM My father always said that he would give me an 'american' name in case we ever moved to the States, I had an easy name to remember. :)
My first daughter was going to be named Diana for the late Princess of Wales; I found out that I was preggo during her funeral and she was a very important figure ect ect..One night I had a dream and 'someone' told me to name her Julia instead; I later found out that Julia was the name of my grandmother that died the day after my dad was born. With my second daughter I had no way of picking her name, my then husband did and it stayed.
phoebe7165 12-31-2005, 12:22 AM Well, my name is Andrea and my dad's name is Andrew so.....
My mom told me that they almost named me Kelly(don't know where they got that from!!). I wish they did because I get tired of people getting my name wrong and calling me Angela & Adrienne.
I Mom just liked the name Sara, she likes biblical names. Although my mom recently told me she briefly considered naming me Gretchen :eek2:
theshark8777 12-31-2005, 01:07 AM I was named after a soap opera.
Moonlight Lady 12-31-2005, 02:18 AM My mother's favorite aunt was Katherine and I was named after her.
Living In a '70's Dream 12-31-2005, 02:31 AM I hate my name; first it is Tara, but it is pronounced (TAR-RAH)..not the norm-TERRA, and I was named after a character from the show the Avengers (Tara King)...and forget about trying to spell my last name...which common, but with an uncommon spelling:rolleyes: and as far as naming my children; for a girl, I am going to name her Jordana Rhiannon Michelle. I always liked the name Jordana, because it is different and not too common; the name Rhiannon, because I am a huge Stevie Nicks fan, and also for my Welsh hertiage, and Michelle, because the father's name is Michael; for a boy..DEFINITELY, James Spencer after my great grandfather, I always thought he had the coolest name; and for my third child, John-Alec, after my favorite bass player John Entwistle of the Who, and Laurence, for a middle name, and after my dad.
dawsongirl 12-31-2005, 02:32 AM Some girl my dad knew...or something. I dunno, I was supposed to be Jeffrey.
AD FAN 12-31-2005, 02:42 AM I was named after my Dad's mother, who passed away a year before I was born. When I have kids I'm naming one Jack (after JJ Pryor on American Dreams lol ...i really just like the name), and one Grey (b/c my favorite Dave Matthews song is Grey Street, and I don't really like the name Dave, or Matthew.) I also like the names Morgan and Maygun, for no reason really.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 12-31-2005, 02:42 AM Um um, I guess just because my mom liked Ashlee and she wanted to spell it different? She was going to name me Jordan before that...
My first child is going to be a girl and I want her name to be Audrey...or maybe Audree to keep the tradition heh. I just think that's a pretty name and it's not HUGELY common.
Karen* 12-31-2005, 05:31 AM My dad named me Karen because there was no one in his family with a first name that started with the letter K and he thought that was the nicest female name beginning with that letter. He almost named me Katrina (Yah, like the hurricane) and also considered the name Vivian, which doesn't really make any sense because I do have a cousin on my dad's side with the name Vanessa (b. 1980).
I don't know what I'm gonna name my kids. If I'm still a Rent-head seven years from now, then I'll probably name them after Rent characters/actors. Or maybe just after famous people I like.
Michael [hXc] 12-31-2005, 08:56 AM this was always one of the worst topics to talk about with my parents. my dad wanted me to either have an Italian first name, or be named after him (Joseph). and some of his first choices for my name were Guglielmo, Natalino, and Carmine. how could i live my life introducing myself to people with names like that? i don't look all that Italian (maybe northern though) and i don't have an accent either so it would seem weird to name me Guglielmo or Carmine. so my mom wanted to give me a nice, simple name. she wanted Christopher originally, but that actually became my brother's name. she either wanted in the end, Michael or Brandon. of course this pissed my dad off a lot. so when my mom filled out the birth certificate, she picked the name for herself, Michael. but she put my dad's name down as my middle name, which is Joseph. my dad didn't like it, but he got over it since i have his first name as my middle name.

Cool
Too bad it wanst Carmine id call you the Big Ragu all the time
Guglielmo hjhmm
"Hey my names Guglielmo, dont mess with me Ill kick yer butt, understand? GOOD!"
Im named after my dad and grandpa, Ill probably name oen of my kds Jack too
But you know what would be awesome? If I named all my kids after onomotpeoia. Wam, Bam, Bang,, Pow and Zap.
Michael [hXc] 12-31-2005, 09:59 AM i know someone with the last name Guglielmo. and it'd be weird to use it as a first name (i guess it is). i am satisfied with a nice, normal name. well normal to us i mean, nothing foreign. :)
Mijada 12-31-2005, 10:10 AM My naming situation is kind of complicated. My mom had 3 names picked out for me. Kristin, Kirsten and Mariette. I happened to be born on my brothers 7th birthday and since his name is Kurt Daniel my mom chose a name that would match with that so I was named Kristin Danielle.
As for my own children, my husband and I have completely different tastes in names but we finally agreed on Spencer Joel Thomas for our son. We got the first name from actor Spencer Tracy. Thomas is my husbands name and since everyone in Toms family has 2 middle names, he at the last minute, decided that he wants our kids to have 2 middles as well so I chose Joel because it is short, simple and one of my favorite Biblical names.
We would like to have 2 more kids. For a girl I have chosen Christine Leah Frances. I love the name Christine, Frances is a family name and Leah is another short, simple Biblical name.
For boys we have agreed on either Stefan or Blake. Not sure about middle names but I like Patrick, William, Timothy and Luke.
Michael [hXc] 12-31-2005, 11:48 AM any name is better than Guglielmo or Carmine. :barf: puke:
TheHappyBurgerMeister 12-31-2005, 02:51 PM They named me Kristina because I guess it was after my great great great grandmother, but a few years ago I saw her grave and it was "Christine". I think my mom THOUGHT it was Christina (but spelled it with a K) or what it really was,
Nighthawk76 12-31-2005, 06:03 PM My parents just really liked the name Michael just like so many other parents in the 1970's. If I had been a girl I would have been named Jennifer.
Ireneparalegal 12-31-2005, 07:02 PM I love these posts. The stories are so interesting.

Dutabi84 12-31-2005, 09:49 PM I could have sworn my mom told me I was named after someone from the cast of "Dallas." But upon looking at a cast list of that show, I don't see my name anywhere...wtf?

Perhaps Dusty Farlow?
Ambear 01-01-2006, 12:19 AM My mom was going to name me Summer Rose, but my dad didn't like it. So they named me Amber just because no one else in the family had the name. I did end up with two middle names though. My mom gave me the middle name Michelle because she thought it was pretty and it was the name of her best friend. My dad gave me the middle name Louise after his sister that was in really bad shape. I kind of hate my first name though because it is an alert and a color.
dawsongirl 01-01-2006, 04:13 AM Perhaps Dusty Farlow?
I used to watch Dallas, but I don't remember that character.
robyrob 01-01-2006, 10:22 AM I used to watch Dallas, but I don't remember that character.

That was Clayton Farlow's ( Howard Keel's) son. He was one of Sue Ellen's many boyfriends. He was played by Jared Martin. He was on the show from 1979-1982 and also in 1985.
Parakeet03 01-01-2006, 12:08 PM My parents named me Rebecca because they're very religious so they wanted to give me name from the bible.
Hollow 01-01-2006, 12:58 PM Genesis 17: 15, "And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be."
thank you god; that would have been horrible.
Cactus Jack 01-01-2006, 01:02 PM  :D
*MIBabe03* 01-01-2006, 03:15 PM My name is Laura, and my parents gave me a variation of my mom's best friend's name, which is Laurie. They didn't name me Laurie though because it doesn't sound good with my last name, and also my dad has a cousin who's name is also Laurie. My middle name is Catherine, and my parents liked it because to them it sounded really strong. They almost named me Catherine Anne, but my last name is also pretty long.
When my mom's best friend had her daughter, she named her Madeleine which is after my mother. It's spelled exactly the same too. :)
Dutabi84 01-01-2006, 08:14 PM Perhaps Dusty Farlow?
Ah, that could very well be it.

I totally don't remember that guy. I must not have been paying as much attention as I thought.
YoliUSA 01-01-2006, 11:09 PM My name is a combination of my mother's first and second name. :)
Chad Michael Murray 01-01-2006, 11:25 PM Why I got named what I was named, I have no idea.
Anyway, if I ever decide to have a kid and it's a boy, he'll be named Matt (Matthew) after me!
WhoStheBoss_Fan 01-02-2006, 12:22 PM my mom just liked the name sarah michelle
