View Full Version : The Best brand of dvd-r JeffRuss1972 12-29-2005, 06:25 PM Just getting started recording onto dvd-r and was wondring what is the best brand of dvd-r to use? Thanks for any input!;) Agent 13 12-29-2005, 06:33 PM Most say Taiyo Yuden's are the best. My burner doesn't recognize them. ymmv All over the trading world, you will find this listing of the supposedy best recommended brands: Sony brand DVD+R (made in Japan) = Taiyo Yuden media Sony brand DVD+R (made in Taiwan) = SONY media Sony brand DVD-R (made in Japan) = Taiyo Yuden or SONY media Fuji brand DVD+R (made in Japan) = Taiyo Yuden media Fuji brand DVD-R (made in Japan) = Taiyo Yuden media Verbatim brand DVD-R (made in Taiwan) = MCC media Verbatim brand DVD+R (made in Taiwan) = MCC media Maxell brand DVD-R (made in Japan) = MXL media Maxell brand DVD+R (made in Japan) = MAXELL media TDK brand DVD-R (made in Taiwain) = TDK media loren 12-29-2005, 07:03 PM this question is always fun it is just like the goldwing board i am on, when dude asks about brand of tire, or brand of oil my limited list is taiyo yudens ritek philips, also branded as office depot verbatium sony fuji and maxell anymore i use 90% ty discs, i can get them for about the same fees as the others best buy. compusa , staples, o depot, c city, all run sales almost every week and all claim to match the others prices walmart will homor any price for the few they stock, at my 2 local stores its a matter of grabbing all off the shelf, and tell the clerk price match to ________ and its zero problem also sams has verbatium at about $30 a hundred thats a low end price on what i call great product--at a retail store as a new person, listen to some of the latger volume traders dont use crap emdia, you will have numerous problems--this i will warranty in writing you will not save a cent --in the long run--geting the $ 4 per 50 blanks of teon, imation, benq, nexxt, i seriously turn down trades when people tell me they use this garbage if you use top quality blanks, ship via priority, and do things when you say you will you will be a very popular trader here a combination of those 3 things, is hard to beat good luck also as a note, no retails on this board-- JeffRuss1972 12-29-2005, 09:40 PM Okay, thanks again! I got a dvd/vhs recorder for Christmas and it came with 1 dvd-r Verbatim disc. I transferred a movie I had on vhs to the Verbatim dvd and the quality was good. Wasn't sure of that brand though. Thanks!!! hmd45 12-30-2005, 10:01 AM The best I've ever used is Taiyo Yuden with Verbatim a close second. Maxell is good also If they are from the right source. Best to try to get media made in Japan which makes much better media than the other countries. Lamont 12-30-2005, 10:12 AM Taiyo Yuden is the best by far the others that loren mentioned are all fine AS FAR AS THE CHEAPO brands some are STILL better than others imation and staples house brands are not bad higher failure rates but not bad nexxtech, teon, benq are just plain worthless JeffRuss1972 12-30-2005, 12:52 PM I definitely don't mind spending a little more for good quality. It looks like TY Yuden(?) is a good one to go with. Is there a particular speed that is best? I'm still fairly new to all this.;) Lamont 12-30-2005, 01:16 PM Burn speed is really not that big of an issue as long as your burner is good and the media is good it matters not some people with old our low end dvd players will try to tell u that low burn speeds work better, BUT the problem is with there machines NOT the discs most TY i buy are listed as 8 X but they actually burn at 12 or 16 x speeds so that is best buy i have found sugar ray 12-30-2005, 04:25 PM its an on-going argument. coke or pepsi? duracell or energizer? maxell or TDK?? various studies and tests have been done to determine best from worst media. i guess what it all boils down to is find out what works best for you and stick to that brand. in a nutshell, "you get what you pay for" you go cheap you get cheap results (bad discs etc...) you can't go wrong with Tayo's as some of the gang have pointed out. However, Tayos can be pricey! im a HUGE fan of TDK myself. hmd45 12-31-2005, 11:42 AM You can get 100 Taiyo Yuden 8 x disks at www.Rima.com for 32.99 which with shipping is about 40 cents each. I find the quality of thier disk are better than the other places. tick26 01-09-2006, 05:16 PM it's really what your dvd recorder will accept try a few brands and see what you like. JeffRuss1972 01-15-2006, 01:15 PM Many thanks to all who chimed in! So far I've used Verbatim 8x and Memorex 8-16x and both have been great. My next buy will probably be the Taiyo-Yudens. Thanks again to everyone who posted!;) padre 01-15-2006, 04:29 PM If you want some Taiyo-Yudens at a good price, try the Sony DVD-R/+Rs on sale this week (11/15) at Staples. They're $14.95 for 50, but make sure you get the ones labelled "Made in Japan". In the case of +Rs, they've been TY media. For -Rs, they've been TY or Sony media, both of which are excellent. loren 01-15-2006, 06:13 PM If you want some Taiyo-Yudens at a good price, try the Sony DVD-R/+Rs on sale this week (11/15) at Staples. Agent 13 01-15-2006, 10:00 PM There are so many variables with regards to equipment that I wouldn't believe the list even if someone put it in granite. For instance, so many complain about Princos, but I've had great luck with them using my recorder, but I haven't had the same luck using Princos with my burner. (Note: My Panasonic recorder let's me know after the disc is finalized if I have a coaster or not, whereas it's easier to miss a dud with a burner.) To keep traders happy, I don't use that brand anymore, but even if you used the supposedly best brands out there, you still can get a coaster. PLUS if you don't store your discs properly you could lose what you've worked so hard to build. |
