View Full Version : "The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice"
Dean Winchester 12-28-2005, 05:41 AM I have loved every episode I've watched thus far, but however, I found myself getting bored with this episode and it seemed to drag compared to some of the other episodes that you're into the 30 minute mark before you even realize it's been on for 10 minutes because they're that involving and entertaining, and I am surprised because it's one of the most popular episodes. There were some moments I loved, such as David and Maddie fighting in the car about being sexist, and Maddie and David calling each other in the middle of the night. But all in all, I just wasn't as "into" the episode as I was with every single one I'd watched prior.
I suppose it's because I wasn't really into film noir movies. It was a neat idea but all in all, I wasn't thrilled with the episode the way I was expecting to considering all the adoration the episode receives. Does anyone else feel the same way about this episode?
kismet 12-28-2005, 10:55 AM I disagree totally.
It's one of my favorites - just to watch the beauty of Cybill in the black dress does it for me.
I didn't find it slow -- the only scene I didn't love was the one when they had the signs flying across the screen as BW was walking. I know the director said they took that idea from actual movies, but it wasn't my favorite scene.
I love BW's face as Cybill walks towards him when he is sitting on the window ledge. I love how talented/beautiful Cybill was when she sang "I Told Ya". I love the kiss outside the building and the subtle noise Cybill makes when she is about to be kissed. I love the fact that Cybill wore Rita Hayworth's neglige' courtesy of Orson Welles -- and WOW it worked 'cuz Cy sure looked voluptuous.
I think that both BW and Cybill seem to "fit" that time period. Didn't Orson Welles feel the same way about Cybill?
ryangie97 12-28-2005, 01:19 PM When this ep. aired I felt the same way. I didn't really like it. I thought it dragged and I just wanted to see Cybill and Bruce as David and Maddie. But now I love it. I've watched this one numerous times. They look so gorgeous in black and white. I love the scenes with cy singing, the kissing scenes(very hot), and I even like the scene with Bruce walking down the street with the signs over his head. Brilliant episode! I think my favorite line however was before the black and white:
David: "Not only are you a sexist, but you are the sexiest sexest it has ever been my good fortune to satirize.........satirize, scrutinize, fantasize, etc. etc.":D
i hate how most dramas think they have to take their characters to do a story in the past. i don't want to see that.
dark shadows is an exception because it took maybe one or two characters to live in the past with the people from the past without ignoring present time. it actually gave reason for the events of present time. nobody else does it that way.
neon000 12-28-2005, 06:24 PM I think in this case they did it because of Moonlighting's ties to the old-school detective and male-vs.-female movies of the past. Also it provided yet another substitute framework for a battle between the two heroes and their ways of thinking. In that sense it was a metaphor for their situation in the present time.
Dean Winchester 12-28-2005, 06:48 PM well, after I finish seasons 1-3 (season 3 might be out in time for when I finish season 2), I will give this episode a second chance.
I think part of it was because with this episode, I came into it knowing all the hype and acclaim it's received, while most of the episodes prior to it, I watched it without any expectations, and I enjoyed all of those thoroughly. I think Bruce and Cybill were both great in the episode, I guess I just found the episode to be slower-paced than what I have come to expect from Moonlighting after watching 10 or 11 episodes.
MulberryGal 12-29-2005, 08:38 AM I think you've hit the nail on the head Hung Up - if you hadn't heard all the hoopla about how good this episode was, you may have come to it with a different feeling. It is a lot more slow paced than your average ML episode too, I agree, which is possibly more of a normal pace, but for ML, it's veerry slow.
Having said all that, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this episode. Bruce and Cybill both suit this style of period piece, and as a bit fan of old black and white movies, I love all the references to old films. It's also very funny and very sexy.
To me, this episode is worth it just for that one scene of Bruce playing his 'horn' sat in the window with the sign flashing "HOT".. If ya need a reminder, see my avatar!! :D

gypsygem81 12-29-2005, 08:48 AM I'm with you Mul! I love this episode! I guess it may be disappointing to people who've heard all the hype about it and then found it a bit slow. It does have a slow pace compared to usual ML episodes. But this is one hot episode, and the hype is totally justified, in my opinion! I love the old black and white movies too and Bruce and Cybill just seem so natural in their roles.
And let's not talk about Bruce's horn....
I just can't get enough of this! (this episode, that is!)

kismet 01-21-2006, 02:10 PM I just watched this again this morning. I can't get enough of this episode. I love Cybill in the black dress, Rita Hayworth's negligee, and the kisses are just scrumptious. I don't have to close my eyes when those two kiss!:D
I watched and listened to the commentary. Yup Glenn - she was great - she was better than great - she was great great!!
dreams200377 01-21-2006, 05:09 PM I just watched this one again the other night. Could it be possible for this episode to get even better the more times you watch? It seems so to me. I loved it even more this time around. Great episode. And they look "simply mahvelous" in black and white.
laura a 01-22-2006, 05:06 AM Im always watching this episode too!. Yeah you gotta love those kisses ,personally i enjoy the second one better, its more intense more sexy and you sorta hold your breath while your watching this scene.I love it in the window scene in which the way that Cybill/Maddie/Rita comes right and kinda thrusts herself on to Bruce/David/Zachs lap and sorta brings her legs in with his, and the way that he stands up and takes her and literally eats her up with his kiss!
Tazmania 01-22-2006, 04:02 PM Im always watching this episode too!. I don't think we will ever see Cybill looking more like a 50's actress then on these pictures...... BEAUTIFUL!!
Tazmania 01-22-2006, 05:42 PM Whats that Tamm?
Tazmania 01-22-2006, 05:44 PM Never mind I looked it up and its the right word for this whole epi!
Its perfect isn't it?
I mean both the word sultry to describe the episode and the episode itself
kismet 01-22-2006, 08:51 PM Wasn't it Orson Welles who told Cybill she would have been "the it girl" in the 40's? She looks so gorgeous in black and white.
Hmmmmmm, Cybill and Rita Hayworth around at the same time. Two fine specimens of beauty, don't you think?
AND Cybill sure did fill out Rita's neglige'. Wowzer!;)
dreams200377 01-23-2006, 08:10 AM She certainly would have fit in perfectly in the 40's. Black and white "becomes her."

kismet 02-14-2006, 02:09 PM Does David call Maddie "angel" in any other episode other than Dream Sequence?
MulberryGal 02-15-2006, 05:02 AM Hi Kis,
I can't remember of any other instance where he calls her angel... He tends to call her honey on the whole, especially when he's after something! :happyface

laura a 02-15-2006, 09:23 AM Hi Kis,

Yeah i dont think he ever called her angel other than in the Dream...... Like you said he tended to call her honey or blondie blonde or as in later episodes,`the big blonde` which i didn`t like ,because it didn`t really sound like a term of endearment to me.I think he may have called her baby a few times though but i cant recollect in what episodes that was.
laura a 10-27-2006, 06:01 PM I don`t if anyone has seen the film Last Man Standing but i finally managed to get it on dvd. Although i did see when it first came out , it was a long time ago and i kinda forgot about it.
Anyway i was sat there watching it last night and i couldn`t help but notice a resemblance to The Dream Sequence...... Not so much in the storyline but in the fact that certain things reminded me of it .
1. Both Last Man... and The Dream... are both set in the thirties/fourties.
2. Bruce does the Raymond Chandler kinda voice overs in both features
3. The style of dress is very similar.
4. There is even a blonde Cybill look alike in Last Man...( that Bruce`s character just so happens to snog a few times!)
5. There is one scene in which this blonde lookalike is wearing a negligee that is practically the same as the one worn by Cybill in Dream....
There is one thing that isn`t seen in Dream.... but IS in Last Man... and that is Bruce`s .........BUM!!!!!:D :happyface
It`s not earth shattering news but it just made me smile and instantly think of Moonlighting - how spooky these coincidences keep cropping up from time to time.
