She actually called him GRAMPS. It was because he acted like an OLD MAN at such a Young Age. I wondered the same thing when I started watching this show again in 2002 because it was never mentioned why on the show..

He didn't act like an old man, he was very wise and knowledgeable for his age.

Yea, I noticed it too. I've never heard an explanation on the show. That would be a gr8 one to ask him.

My brother had a friend everyone called "Gramps"...never knew why though. It's just a term of endearment of sorts. I have heard it used alot. It's very common.

BTW, what is meant by "making it up"? The term is not made up. GRAMS is what one measures with, the name Michael was called was GRAMPS!!!

just play the DVD and put the subtitles on and you will read that she says GRAMPS.
