I don't know if it was really true, but I remember hearing that Jackee sort developed an overinflated attitude because the show was supposed to have been a hit because of her character and not Marla's. She must have been on some kind of high because she dropped the Harry from her name. To me that is always a symbol of arrogance when a star does that.

I seem to remember reading about a so-called feud between the two stars. Jackee was definitely a scene-stealer in 227, much like Marla's character of Florence was on The Jeffersons, so that probably got on Marla's nerves a bit. Jackee, at one point, was taping the now-defunct soap opera Another World in New York City and flying to LA on the weekends to tape 227. Normally, when you read about tensions on the set of a movie or television show, there's at least a small grain of truth in the stories...

If there is a feud, I think it's long over. Marla and Jackee appeared on Lifetime's "Famous Sidekicks" special over a year ago, and seemed to get along very well.

I also heard about the feud with Jackee and Marla Gibbs. Jackee did an interview with JET Magazine several years ago when Sister, Sister was starting to take off and she explained how time has humbled her. She did admit that her ego did grow on 227 and how she insisted that she was the real star (hence the drop in ratings in season five). She also talked about how 1990-1993 were hard years for her as nothing she did took off. The Royal Family that starred Redd Foxx ended in the middle of the first season after his death. She also filmed other pilots for potential shows but no one picked them up. She reported that she had a hard time accepting the role of the mother on Sister, Sister and she was glad that she did it.

lol, she stood out like a sore thumb on that show. She came on the episode as a cousin who moved in after Redd Foxx died. I am not sure if she made cameos before his death on the show. I guess the producers were trying to rebrand and refocus the show.

To this very day Jackee has this big ego(even though she's my fave on the show).

Back in the day you couldn't tell her nothing(has anyone seen her on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous? I've seen an episode featuring her when I was little, yes, she was showing her a*s like she was the 80's Beyonce or something).

She was something else I can tell you that, if only twenty years ago if she had a crystal ball would she have been showing her a*s(celebrity fit club anyone?) Even on CFC, she thought she was hot **** but when Toccara really shined(i.e: younger and prettier) the green eyed monster kicked in.

And to think I actually wanted to be like her back then.

Well there's long been debate over a mysterious feud between Bea Arthur and Betty White (apparently more from Bea's corner) of "The Golden Girls", and if you think about it, you never see them together or really exchange many words at all. Yes, they're on specials and at events, but have you noticed that Rue is always between them? Hmmmmm? They're never side by side.

I dearly love "The Girls" and of course hope this is all coincidental speculation, but my point is that although there could sadly be some truth to that (sometimes I wonder if Bea was jealous of how popular Rose was and all the big laughs she got, although all the girls were brilliant with big laughs---but Dorothy's were more sarcastic and subtle than Rose's antics), in the "227" documentary with Alaina, Marla, and Jackee, correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Marla and Jackee beside each other, and are pleasant and reminiscing throughout the piece? Things seemed fine there, but I haven't watched it in a long time...

And yeah, it's a shame that Jackee did get an ego, but I can kind of understand why---but at least Marla didn't go the route that Linda Lavin did on "Alice" concerning Polly Holliday!

Now if only we can get "227" season 2 to get to DVD!

What happened with Linda and Polly?

The bare bones of it is, Linda forced her out because of her (Linda's) ego.

Here are some quotes from the "Alice" board:

"She got her own spin off series and plus there was friction between her and Linda Lavin because people was saying that Flo was the star. If you look at the final episodes with Polly on Alice you can see there was a difference in the way Linda interacted with Polly on the show compared to the earlier episodes. Diane Ladd, the original Flo, replaced Polly as Belle and Linda did not get along with her as well. Midway through the middle of the following season, 5 that is, she asked off the show. Then Celia Weston came along and I guess she did not posed as a threat to Linda and stayed for the rest of the series. I'll tell you one thing the show was not as interesting after Polly left the show. I bet if her and Linda got along splindedly she would had came back to Alice after Flo failed."

"It is true. Linda Lavin HATED Polly Holliday. My uncle worked on Alice from 1977-1978. It was well-known that Lavin had tremendous resentment towards Holliday's success. Lavin felt the show was suppose to be all about her and with Holliday's success surpassing Lavin's, it was a bitter pill to have to swallow. It was rumored that instead of firing Holliday, which could have led to a lawsuit, they would spin the character off into her own show, "Flo". The series wasn't expected to last supposedly. It is a shame because Polly Holliday's talent is greatly missed by TV viewers."

It looks like there was a bit of a feud between Jackee and Marla. I think maybe Jackee got too popular for Marla's liking and it would have been worse when Jackee won the Emmy. I found some of the story in this interview with Jackee from 1992 -

http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1264/is_n1_v23/ai_12102028/pg_1

"The first three years were actually great," says Jackee. "When Sandra took off and I took off with her, the truth is it did indeed create a lot of tension. There were problems on Marla's part, which was truly ridiculous because she had all the power. It was her show. Maybe the problem stemmed from the fact that from the beginning Marla wanted someone else for the part, but the network insisted on me.

"They were all pushing Sandra, and they were pushing me. That changed when I got big, maybe too big, in Marla's eyes. Not that Marla and I ever had any arguments. She was never rude to me, and we always remained cordial. But on the biggest night of my life, when I won my Emmy, not only wasn't there a party given for me, but there was also not a flower or a word of congratulations. Ever. There was nothing, and that hurt. Afterward, my part got less and less each week, and it became clear to me that it was time to leave and I did," Jackee remembers.

Gibbs emphatically denies that she ever had a problem with Jackee on 227. She admits, however, that she had indeed wanted her daughter, Angela, or Rosalie Hooks (daughter of actor Robert Hooks) for the role of Sandra. "From the moment Jackee auditioned for the role of Sandra, with that prance and pout she invented, she was Sandra. She was spectacular, and I never felt competitive with her because I was the show's creative consultant," Gibbs says. "Problems occurred when the network wanted Jackee not just featured but starring in every show, and I couldn't allow that. Not because I was the star, but because I was the producer and we were an ensemble company, which means I had other actors to consider and protect if we were to remain a harmonious family of players." Gibbs also maintains that she ordered flowers for Jackee when she was nominated for the Emmy.

"I was going to surprise her on the set with them, but the flowers were delivered to her outside the studio by mistake. I don't know to this day if Jackee knows I sent them. As for the Emmy night, well, I was hurt because I learned that her sister was giving an Emmy party and I wasn't invited. None of us from the show was, so I guess you could say we all acted dumb because we all felt hurt. But I never stopped believing Jackee was funny, because she is funny, and she deserves every bit of success that comes her way. She's earned it. Whether she knows it or not, I'm in her corner. I always have been."

Good job finding the original article! Funny how Marla says the cast was like family but what about Kia Godwin who disappeared after the second season. Then lets not forget the unneeded Alexandria in season four who disappeared in season five.

She ceased being a regular in season one. She made two appearances (I think) in season two. She then made her last and only appearance in season three of the show in the episode "The sing off". She was a pretty good singer, too. By season four, Rose was a housewife without a hubby and child.

She went back to using her full name in 1994 when Sister, Sister debuted on ABC in the Spring of 1994.

I didn't see the Lifetime special, but I have read that they mended any fences some time back and all was fine.

Plus, Marla said a few months back that they were doing an upcoming play together (in addition to the new sitcom they'll be starring in).

I remember when she was on CFC and she dogged the hell out of Toccarra, namely when they were on the same team whenever they lost the challenges. And she gave dirty looks at her when she on the other team.

As for Bea and Betty, I do recall somehwere hearing that Betty mentioned something about Bea not liking her b/c her, Rue and Estelle were getting the audience warmed-up by joking around before the show started and Bea being a serious broadway actress did not like to joke around during warm-ups before the show started.
