I've had a hard time finding a stand alone DVD player for a reasonable price (say, around $250 or under) that can play both plus and minus DVD formats.
It seems unless you buy a fairly expensive one, it is mostly one or the other.
(I don't even care if it records in both, just plays!)
Can anyone please help me?
(And do you recommend any particular brand?)
Thanks.
:)

Check the Liteon dvd recorders, they record both + & - formats.
I believe walmart still carries these.

panasonic e55
its been discountinued, in favor of a model with more buttons that no one needs
i got a couple of them for about $170 shipped to the house--each
they were refurbished with full warranty
do a google search and the curent offers will turn up
i already had one and i liked the way it worked and i understood the 900 buttons on the remote, so i didnt want to learn more remotes, so i grabbed a couple
the machine has worked well for me
i use it mainly to extract things from my two directv tivo units
adding menus on discs is very simple,a nd there is a dvd enclosed in the box, that explains most of the avaible functions
i think its a great outfit, for the money
if money was no object, they also make a version with a huge hard drive, also avaible from the same place as a refurbished model
sorry, i dont remember the name of the seller,
also overstock has a lot of nice deals, and $ 3 shipping or less
and a 15 % off offer on the very first order you place

My standalone Magnavox ($150 last year at Best Buy) plays both as does my Toshiba portable DVD player. I thought it was pretty standard now for the new ones to play both. Especially, since so many of them seem to be expanding the various formats from not only DVD+R/-R in order to play avi & mpg files (which seem to be the preferred files for trading in some circles since the quality is better & they take up less space (translate: you can fit way more footage in mpg/avi format on a DVD than you can if it's in DVD/VOB format)), too...
