Did anyone ever see the episode where Bob is at an ice cream shop and the clerk makes a mistake in his order. Then the shop offers him their deluxe largest banana split sundae, but Bob doesn't want them to go to the trouble. He is embarrassed by the attention it is bringing him in the shop and he is already a low key type of person.

I never saw it but was told about it from someone and it sounded really funny. Is that the way it happened? What episode was it?

That was the fifth episode of season three, "Sorry, Wrong Mother". The waiter was played by John Ritter.

That episode, "Sorry, Wrong Mother", is the episode where Howard is trying to introduce his fiance Ellen (Bob's sister) to his son Howie. You can find it on two different VHS tapes. One is a Columbia House TBNS Collectors' Series VHS called "The Jetlagged Navigator". All 4 episodes on that tape feature Howard Borden/Bill Daily. It's also on the 6 tape series "The Very Best of the Bob Newhart Show", where there are 2 episodes from each of the 6 seasons on each tape. That episode is on the 3rd tape.

Both can be obtained periodically on eBay. But with Season 3 "just around the corner" (we hope) on DVD, you may not have to wait too long to get it on DVD.

This episode is now available on the Season 3 DVD set, including commentary by Bob & Peter Bonerz. I really enjoyed seeing the show again and hearing their comments about it.

I read somewhere online that the ice cream parlor was based on a real chain called Farrell's. Anyone ever hear of that chain? I'm not familiar with it.

Yes, it was a very popular chain out here in the west. Back in Illinois, though, I doubt that they had Farrell's. It was pretty well as depicted in that episode - expensive hats, huge amounts of ice cream, something similar to the Beached Whale. We had one here in San Diego - - in Mira Mesa - - at least, we did about 2 or 3 years ago. I'm not sure whether it's still in business any more.

Hey Donna - I did a google search and learned that there are only 2 Farrell's Ice Cream Parlors in operation today. There is one in Santa Clarita, CA and one somewhere in Hawaii.

Here is an interesting site that gives some history on the chain:

According to that site, the Mira Mesa shop closed its doors in the summer of 2006. Here's some more info:

My daughter reminded me that it closed. She had wanted to be taken there when she was younger - after ice skating lessons!

It sure looked like a fun place to go. I enjoyed reading its history on that website.
