season three (and onward) doesn't have anywhere near the amount of period music that the first two years have. That is why I am baffled with season 2 being stuck in a rut, because the rest of the series wouldn't cost nearly as much for music rights

i said it before and ill say it again i love the 1st two seasons but season two's
music rights have jepardized the release of the rest of the series and you're right the music use in the rest of the series would cost alot less than season 1&2.i wish we could get beyond all of this and put out the rest of the series out.

What they should have done was soundalikes to perform the songs and secure the rights in perpetuity. Yes, they'd still have to pay songwriting royalties to the music publishers, but it's a pittance compared to licensing fees for master recordings.
This is common practice in commercials, except of course where the artists signed off on using the tracks. Eddie Van Halen was made aware that Pepsi was going have someone do a soundalike version of "Right Now," so he said the hell with it and licensed them the rights to the Van Halen song. He said "Why should someone else get the money?" Makes sense: If the artist is willing to let it slide for a few bucks, why not do it??
