View Full Version : Holiday Mishaps
dawsongirl 12-22-2005, 03:23 AM Even the best laid plans sometimes go wrong. Every had something unplanned or bad happen during the Christmas-New Years holiday?
A few Christmases ago, Christmas was at grandma's house, and 3 people ended up with apparent food poisoning, including BOTH of my parents. I dodged some huge bullet that year by not eating...something. Not sure what it was, unless it was cheese-related, because back then I was avoiding all cheese like the plague.
I haven't wanted to go back since. Having to nurse both your parents as they puke their insides up leaves an impression.
PZelda 12-22-2005, 03:29 AM Oh man...
- I had a case of the flu over Christmas in 1999. My dad and the rest of my stepfamily went out of town for Christmas and since I wasn't coming with, I had to spend the 23rd (day before Xmas Eve) at my paternal grandma's house. That was the longest and worst one and a half days ever. There were no mishaps but oh man, I would have rather died than be sick with the flu at my paternal grandma's. She made this REALLY weird chicken soup that just made me even more nauseated looking at it. The noodles were long and squiggly, and the water was brown. Not creamy brown. BROWN. As in, dirty water. No way I was eating that thing. :barf: I was SOOOOO relived when my maternal grandma came to the rescue and took me to her house on Christmas Eve.
- In December of 2002, I got a really bad case of the flu where I was bedridden for two weeks straight. I was so sick that I had to be prescribed antibiotics to get well. Again, no mishaps there, but it was awful. I still didn't have 100% strength by Christmas.
Heh, no mishaps but yeah...Being sick around Christmas sucks. :(

I hear that. No flu, but I had a bad cold one Christmas, and having a bunch of loud relatives in a small house only made it worse. And to top it all off, I felt like passing out all night.
robyrob 12-22-2005, 08:46 AM i think it was back in 2000, but I fell off a stool and broke 5 ribs on Christmas morning once - we had to go over to my mom's house for the day and I just clenched my teeth and went through the pain all day without even telling my mom, because i didn't want her to worry.
oh, and while I was lying on the floor, writhing in pain, Robyn was laughing at me.
Janice 12-22-2005, 11:14 AM It was Christmas Eve morning, 1999. My husband Lou had a bad cold for a couple of days, but he woke up in terrible shape and was having trouble breathing. We decided to take him to the hospital. As we were getting ready, my mother called and told me that my father, who had been suffering with stomach pain for days, was now in agony.
I told her that I was taking Lou to the hospital and that I would take them too. Coincidently, they were both patients of the same hospital. Off we go, the four of us, to the hospital. I'm driving, my husband is shivering next to me while wrapped in a blanket. In the back seat, my father is doubled over in pain.
We get to Emergency. They took them right away. My mother went with my father. They put Lou and I in a room and did a quick chest thing to make sure his heart was okay. Next thing I know, they pulled the curtain shut and start making all this commotion. The EMTs had rushed a guy in. We could hear them working on him. Then, the guy died! I think he had a heart attack, but I overheard something about choking on an orange, but I never found out for sure.
They actually left the guy there. I could see him through a part of the curtain, with his sneakers still on. We're in a room with a dead guy next to us.
Meanwhile, this crazy lady is screaming from another room. I guess she was brought in because of drugs and there were cops all around, outside her door. She was wild. I guess they wouldn't release her.
My husband had the flu something fierce. We got prescriptions for him. He stayed in bed for one week. It was the worst case of the flu I had ever seen.
My dad was diagnosed with colon cancer, so they kept him and he ended up having surgery, and was released a week or so later. He beat that cancer.
So four drove in, but three drove home. It was not a Merry Christmas that year.
Tuesday Weld 12-22-2005, 11:52 AM I remember one Christmas, a long time ago, I had either a very bad strep throat, or the flu, I can't remember which. Anyway, that was some Christmas. ohno:

 That's definetly one to forget.
PZelda 12-23-2005, 01:21 AM Janice, something similar happened to somebody I know very well. It was a few years ago (don't remember when) and she and her husband were eating out at Applebee's. They were at this table in the back of the restaurant, and there was an old man sitting at a nearby table. She and her husband had just gotten their food when the old man started having a heart attack and fell off his chair. The server was around & when she saw what happened, she started screaming for a doctor. Some other lady came forward and tried to revive the old man, but it did no good...He died right there on the spot. My friend's husband did not want to stick around any longer, so they got out of there. Creepy.

Kay Scarpetta 12-23-2005, 01:41 PM 7 years ago, my grandmother caught the flu (the vomiting one) on Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve is ALAWYS at my grandparent's house.
Ummm.... 32 people were sick that year.
Christmas morning, 1999.
I was having breakfast with my Mom and Dad at the house, when Mom decided to start pulling her good china out of the cabinets to start setting up for Christmas dinner.
One of the cups takes a tumble and crashes to the floor, shattering into a billion pieces. This was the last time my Father was ever allowed to touch the China.
Since I was in my jammies (and in my bare feet) I decided to try to get away from the scene as quickly as possible.
Of course, I take two steps and step on a piece, and it gets lodged in my left heel.
I spent the good portion of that Christmas morning in the local emergency room, where the quack Doctor did his bset to try to extract the broken pieces. To his knowledge, he got most of it.
After hobbling around for several weeks, (convinced i was going to walk with a limp for the rest of my life) one morning i felt like I had stepped on something. I reached down and lo and behold, a rice size piece of that damn china was sticking out of my foot! No blood or anything, it was poking out of the hole the doctor claimed he fixed for me! Luckily that little problem went away, but dammit, I had a nasty callus on my heel that took almost a whole year to go away.
The moral my dear children, is don't let Dad touch anything of value in the house. Also, the Emergency room is a pretty damn depressing place on Christmas day.
;)
Stormtracker TF 12-24-2005, 06:54 PM I remember once when I was younger I had this horrible chest cold on Christmas, horrible times and an even worse Holiday for me...I slept all day. I think this was in about 1998, though.
snl 70s show fan 12-24-2005, 07:54 PM ive been sick with the flu twice on christmas in 1988 and also last year
Chelsea 12-24-2005, 08:47 PM I once gave as a gift an item that was given to me as a gift by that same person the year before - it wasn't a re-gift of the same item, it was just a strange coincidence. Of course, I still think they thought I had re-gifted...
dawsongirl 12-25-2005, 04:02 AM We played a trivia game tonight for the grab bag gifts. I knew going into this that it was going to bomb because I've got too many spoil sports in my family, and a few too many idiots. And I was right. My uncle was the only one who really enjoyed it...because he's the smartest.
The whole thing just pissed me off. My mom told me my cousin kept sitting in the corner muttering how stupid it was. Damn teenager.
I always get so excited for Christmas...and I always end up depressed.
