High Chaparral Tidbits

Big John Cannon was the determined owner of the High Chaparral Ranch in the Arizona Territory in the 1870s. His better-natured brother Buck assisted.

John's first wife was killed by an Apache arrow in the first episode. Her son Billy Blue, appeared in all but the last season which was no great loss as the character always seemed dim witted to me. Naturally, John immediately remarries the young and beautiful daughter of a local patron. Her brother, Manolito, whom I adored, accompanied her to the High Chapparal. In the last season, they killed off her father as the actor, Frank Silvera had died.

Anyone remember this western, it is my all time favorite. The characters were great, it even had a great opening theme song. I wish this show would make its way to DVD. They never rerun this show anymore.

I vividly remember THE HIGH CHAPARRAL and foreman Don Collier. I THOUGHT
that cowboy in the Hubba Bubba gum commercials looked familiar!

ME TOO!!:eek: I never would've guessed that. I remember as a kid my family and I took a vacation to see my oldest brother who was living in Tucson. They took us to see The High Chaparral, the staff wouldn't let us in the house since they were out filming on location. The Ranch house was real not a facade, we looked through the windows. I guess that's why I have always loved the show, especially the theme.

I used to love that show while I was growing up. Re: westerns, I probably watched High Chaparral more than Bonanza or Gunsmoke. Unfortunately, 35 years or so later, the roles are reversed----Gunsmoke and Bonanza are on daily and I haven't seen High Chapparal in years. And, yes, the Theme song was one that went through your head and wouldn't go away. It was great.

I think about two years ago it was on Hallmark channel on Saturday afternoons. I think took it off though.

I remember the show well from syndication. At the time it was a new primetime series, I was the 2nd kid in a family with 4, and we only had the one television, so I suppose that was not what we watched at its time slot. Anyway, in the late 70's through mid-80's it was part of Channel 39's "western weekend" and was on Saturday and usually Sunday, along with Have Gun; Will Travel, Cheyenne, Sugarfoot, Wagon Train, and others at different times. Gunsmoke was still on every day on a different channel then, and I think Bonanza only joined it in the 80's, when most of those shows lost ratings and were dumped. Then GS and B were almost all that was left. And then, I saw a few HC's on Odyssey, til my cable area dumped Odyssey, and I haven't seen HC for at least a couple of years. It's one of the few series I would purchase on DVD if it's ever available.

The plots are somewhat limited... Cannon and his HC men v. the Apaches. Otherwise, it goes a little bazarre with Don Sebastian Montoya acting like a spoiled filthy-rich man, almost like Mr. Howell on Gilligan's Island; but at least that shows why Victoria and Manolito were willing enough to cross the border and live on the HC. It was cool how they got Cochise's grandson to play the famous chief in one ep. And, of course, there was enough PC by the late 60's to make peace pacts and mutual respect between Cannon and the Apaches a virtue; although by the next ep they would have to do much the same thing over again. But I really like the location shots, and I have been to Old Tucson a couple of times and recognized the house and terrain often seen. In fact, this show is a major reason I ever wanted to go there from 800 miles away in Texas.

Me too!! After seeing the first three episodes I remembered why I loved this show so much, got mine from iOffer.

I watched that show when I was a kid, I loved Blue & Manolito. But I haven't seen it in years.

If you get the chance, you might be able to catch it on the Hallmark channel. I highly recommend this series.

I taped a few episodes off the old Family Channel in the mid 90s.

The High Chaparral is now on the Inspiration Channel. This past week they had the pilot episodes, a Part I and II. Enjoyed it a lot, had forgotten some of the background for the setting, but a great (exceptional) TV show. Started to air in my senior year of high school, in 1967/68, but unfortunately lost track of the show when I was away at college--I will have to catch up on the episodes that I missed! If you love exciting Westerns, you will love this show; it has everything: great acting, adventure, humor--and one heck of a theme song.
