View Full Version : Does it mean that a TV show is not really entertaining if can't get your mind off of
TVFactFan 12-20-2005, 11:04 AM not feeling well when watching it? In the past 2 nights I been having stomach pains and discomfort and was watching Roseanne and I could not get my mind off of how I was feeling at all. But then i turn to married with children and bam, I begin to laugh and forget how bad I was feeling. Can anyone watch a show that makes them feel better if they are not feeling that well?
Brian Damage 12-20-2005, 11:06 AM If I'm really feeling sick or down in the dumps, then no tv show is going to make me feel better.

Well it didn;t work for me-lol I was still moaning and groaning
Brad Russ 12-20-2005, 03:35 PM It's funny that you bring this up, because I was going to bring it up on the Roseanne board. Roseanne, and All In The Family are two shows that almost always make me feel better when I'm sick or depressed. It's like, I look at the Bunker's and Connor's as my family, and they comfort me whenever I'm down.
swedeace 12-20-2005, 03:39 PM It's all psychological and psycho-sematic, actually. It varies from person to person and what kind of pain is associated physiologically. Our brains and physical pain have to corelate and either feel further pain or feel comforted.

Just like Roseeanne?
Mr. Television 12-20-2005, 04:28 PM If I'm really sick nothing can make me feel better. I've had the flu and I tried to watch the NFL and I just didn't care. Not even the Cowboys could cheer me up.
Tuesday Weld 12-20-2005, 04:56 PM I'd say, if it makes you that sick, don't watch it.

I didn't say the show was making me sick because I watch it all the time when I'm feeling well. I just said it wasn't helping me forget how bad I was feeling like Married With Children did when I turned that on.
MsOrange 12-21-2005, 08:36 AM maybe you were just watching a bad episode of Roseanne?
Sharop 12-21-2005, 08:48 AM It depends with me. Sometimes, when I'm not feeling well, or feeling miserable, watching some of my favourite TV shows can make me feel better, and at other times, they don't. I suppose it depends on how bad I feel.
I like the idea of sitcoms possibly being a form of moderate therapy, though. A member of another message board that I go to posted that she met the actor John Cleese a few years back and he told her that there's a surgery in Sweden that shows patients episodes of the sitcom Fawlty Towers (a famous British sitcom; I'm not sure how popular it is in America) to help relieve their depression.

Yeah. Certain game shows and sitcoms. Even a good drama, because if I get involved in the plot, I forget about being sick. Comes back after it's over...but at least it a respite.
Distraction is essential in my life, because stomachaches make me panic...which makes it worse. So I live for distractive TV.

Ooohhhh, I see, I misunderstood. :o
Dean Winchester 12-21-2005, 07:35 PM well, some of Roseanne's episodes are real downers... I am sure that the episode where they think Darlene's baby is going to die, or the second half of the finale, or some of the episodes nothing goes right for them are going to make you snap out of a sad state.
Usually a comedy like Seinfeld or The Golden Girls can do the trick for me (once again, save the ocasional depressing GG moment like when Sophia deals with losing her son or Rose thinking she might have gotten AIDS), Roseanne is great but to me it's got it's dramatic moments too that aren't always funny.
