It was announced by the company on Monday. We will start production on a few Paramount, Universal and Warner Bros. films this January, and hopefully the new High-Definition Blu-ray Discs will be available for sale to consumers starting as early as this March.
Our first HD-DVD titles will be:
The Matrix
2001: A Space Odyssey
Titanic
The Harry Potter movies will be made in April, and the Star Wars movies could be ready in time for next Christmas. :)

if you thought that their was an uproar over Sony's spyware it installs with its music cd's, just wait till those Blu-ray disks start hitting the market.
they have the potential to control the number of times you can watch a disk and the number of different players that an individual disk can be used on - they are designed with digital rights managment (copyright protection) as a primary function, at the expense of any consumer's rights.

Rob:
I hear the Hi-Def DVD burners (which will be availabe in Japan first sometime next year) for your PC, will block you from recording and saving all kinds of Internet content.
The more technolgy gets advanced, the more controls they put on them.

Of course, if either the HD-DVD camp or the Blu-Ray camp go too far in DRM technologies, the consumer backlash will take down both. (Which could go a long way in the favor of Holographic Versatile Discs [HVDs] or another similar technology down the road)

Hee hee:
Yeah, we have an Fluorescent Multilayer Disc (FMD) player at work. It's supposed to be another future of High Definition technology. I've seen a demonstration of it back in June. Very impressive, but right now it's in the store room collecting dust.
