View Full Version : Anyone besides me don't have a cell phone?
TVFactFan 12-14-2005, 03:29 PM People think it's so weird that I don;t have a cell phone. I personally don;t need the extra bill because I pay enough for my regular phone. I even went on a job interview back in june and the interviewer asked me what's my cell number and I said I didn;t have one-lol Anyone else not have one?
Brad Russ 12-14-2005, 03:31 PM I don't, and I probably never will. I don't have many friends anyway, so it would be pointless for me to have one.

Well in this day and age its almost a given for everyone (excluding the old wrinklies) to have mobile phones

That isn't even necessarily true. My 82-year-old grandmother has a cell phone. Granted she doesn't use it that much, but she still has one.

My grandfather has one too. Just like your grandmother, my grandfather doesn't use his much either. It's probably because elderly people are a bit overwhelmed by technology today and it's very understandable. When we get old, we'll be overwhelmed by new technology.
stevedqfan 12-14-2005, 04:04 PM I don't have a cell phone.
gilligan fanatic 12-14-2005, 04:04 PM I don't have one either. I don't even use my house phone, so I would not use a cell phone at all if I had one.
Céline 12-14-2005, 04:09 PM Don't have one either:eek2:
The Chauffeur 12-14-2005, 04:28 PM I did, but I shut it off. It got on my nerves
PZelda 12-14-2005, 04:53 PM I don't have one either  People have been telling me I can get a cell phone to solely use the text messaging feature on it, but I still don't want to own a cell phone.

I did think about getting a cell phone so that way I can't be knocked off the Internet but after giving it some more thoughtr I probably won't

If you wanna pay that much for a cell phone you might as well get cable internet, it probably would be cheaper in the long run depending on what deal you find. cell phones can get pretty pricey. Unless you get a cricket phone which drop calls like crazy or a pick up and go which can add up in buying cards for them all the time.
Mr. Stefani 12-14-2005, 05:45 PM I don't have one either  People have been telling me I can get a cell phone to solely use the text messaging feature on it, but I still don't want to own a cell phone.
i'd reccomend a sidekick..text messaging, AIM, internet, email...My cousin has it soley for those purposes, never wanted one, but her mom made her get it for emergency purposes, and now shes obsessed.
anywayys...yeah i cant live without my cell phone. things glued to my ear. I've had this cell since august 27th and I have 100:43:33 hours/minutes/seconds on it.
Courtnee 12-14-2005, 05:48 PM cell phones are works of the DEVIL!
Kay Scarpetta 12-14-2005, 06:01 PM For anyone who doesn't have one and wants one, mine's up for grabs. I hate phones in general... I have one because my parents want it for emergency purposes, like if I get a flat tire, breakdown, etc.
Phones are satanic.

I agree!! I just got cable internet a couple weeks ago, and it's 100 times better then having internet through a phone line. You really should check into that Solomom, I think you'd like it. Qwest is a really good company if you want to check it out.

Yeah, after I made that post I was thinking that a sidekick would be a better idea. Are there different models, or is there just one model? If there are different models, do they have a basic model I can get? Are they expensive? Sorry about bombarding you with questions.

the one i have is prepaid, so i paid $250 for it(i dont use it for phone, i have my verizon one for that i just wanted the aim and such)..you can get it with a data plan for i think $20-$30ish a month, and the phone will cost around $100 or free depending on where you get it...theres one model(unless you want to pay $200 more for the pink Juicy limited edition one)..but yeah, its worth it. takes pretty good pictures too. i dont know what i'd do in class without it.

Thanks a mil! Sounds like a great plan. :)
Dumballa 12-14-2005, 07:07 PM I have one that was given to me but it hasn't been on since March of '04.
Penny Lane 12-14-2005, 08:11 PM I don't have a cell phone but my hubby does. I hate talking on the phone!
I don't have one. I wouldn't mind getting one for emergencies. However I don't want to be stuck paying a monthly bill for a phone I'll rarely use.
seventies_sitcoms 12-14-2005, 09:37 PM I hate them. I will never own one.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 12-14-2005, 09:42 PM I didn't have one for a long time and then I finally got one in October. The only reason I got one is because I got a new job that's a half hour drive from home, so for safety reasons. It's been pretty nice so far, but I really barely ever use it and I never have it turned on. I use a prepaid plan because I barely ever use it.
Mr. Television 12-14-2005, 09:44 PM Don't have one, don't want one.
~LadyJess~ 12-14-2005, 09:57 PM I don't have a cell phone but my hubby does. I hate talking on the phone!
I hate talking on the phone too. My life would be so much easier without my cell phone. If my cell rings and I am at home, I don't answer and then call the person back from my house phone. Why waste my cell minutes when I am at home? Most of my friends, all they talk on is their cell, I try to avoid it at all costs.
Number 9 Dream 12-14-2005, 10:15 PM Don't have one, don't want one.
Same here...I never really had the need for one. Although it would be nice to have a pre-paid one for my car...just in case an emergency occurs.
YoliUSA 12-14-2005, 11:21 PM I do own a cell phone, but I don't use it all the time like my friends. Today I changed my old cell for a camera phone, even though I think I wont use the camera that much lol.
Living In a '70's Dream 12-14-2005, 11:36 PM I don't, and I probably never will. I don't have many friends anyway, so it would be pointless for me to have one.
Huh? You do not have many friends? You are one of the sweetest people I ever had the pleasure of communicating with!!!
Brad Russ 12-15-2005, 12:08 AM Huh? You do not have many friends? You are one of the sweetest people I ever had the pleasure of communicating with!!!
Ahh Tara, you're so kind. Thank You!!! :) You always make me feel so much better with your kind words. You're one of the sweetest people Iv'e ever met as well.
The reason I don't have too many friends, is because I was sort of out of commission for a few years. Basically out of life. I have agoraphobia, which is a fear of large groups of people, as well as severe panic attacks, so I was basically house bound from the age of 13 to 22. I went those 9 years with absolutely no friends at all. I'm on medication now though, and am getting better all the time, so now I have more friends then I ever did before. :D
Kristen 12-15-2005, 01:23 AM I have a pre-paid cell through Verizon that's mostly for emergencies. I don't use it much, but it's nice to know that if I need a ride or something, it's just a phone call away.
dawsongirl 12-15-2005, 02:10 AM They're nice for emergencies. Like that time I blew out a tire on the interstate. I have a prepaid one because the bill with the US Cellular one was ridiculous. We had like 500 minutes or something and I used 5 a month.
Or like Monday, I was at a store buying my dad a dress shirt, but had no idea what size. So I called my mom right there.
Also nice for people who you have to give them a phone number and don't want to give them your home number. That way you can have the thing shut off and they can't bother you. :)

TVFactFan 12-15-2005, 11:11 AM It is so annoying to hear someone talk on the cell phone on the bus
Tuesday Weld 12-15-2005, 11:59 AM I don't have a cell phone and don't really want/need one. :)
TheGreatPretender 12-15-2005, 12:41 PM I don't have one and I really don't need one. I don't have many friends or social life so hardly any one calls me and I don't go out enough to have an emergency. The people my age just have one just to show off the fact that they have a cell phone with a cheesey ringtone.
Brian Damage 12-15-2005, 12:47 PM I have one of those throw away phones. I hardly use it, but if you don't use it by a certain time, the phone shuts off. Even if you still have money left on it.
Brad Russ 12-15-2005, 03:00 PM It is so annoying to hear someone talk on the cell phone on the bus
Yeah that is annoying. People who do that in movie theatres are the worst. Last time I went to the movie theatre, there was a guy who was basically talking on his cell phone throughout the whole movie. I don't know why someone would pay $10.00 to see a movie, if they're just going to talk on the phone throughout the whole film.
Dutabi84 12-15-2005, 04:32 PM I'm glad I have mine, I'm not sure what I'd do if I weren't able to recieve all 2 or 3 phone calls I get per month.

That's the only drawback to prepaid. One of these days I'll end up with 1048573893 minutes just because I have to keep buying more.
G-Force Glockstar 12-15-2005, 05:40 PM I don't have a cell phone--and I'm 14!! :(
About all the girls at my school have a cell phone already!
Mr. Television 12-15-2005, 05:40 PM It is so annoying to hear someone talk on the cell phone on the bus
It's really annoying when you go shopping and people are blocking the aisles talking on the cellphone and they won't move out of the way to let you through. If you say anything they give you a dirty look. Also people around here drive while they talk on their cellphones all the time. Thats very dangerous too.

Kids that young usually just abuse them anyway. You're fine without one.
MsOrange 12-15-2005, 05:54 PM i dunno what i'd do w/ otu mine.. i use it constantly, it's the only line I use, I do not give out my land line number because I still live at home, so i'd NEVER get the messages if people left them for me. I'm all cell phone.

Grandma

lmao
Ireneparalegal 12-15-2005, 09:29 PM I use to have a cell phone. Not anymore. I got it for work reasons, but i couldn't stand being interrupted and so forth.
Now, I have a car phone and no one other than my immediate family has the number because I don't want to be bugged. I don't get people who have to talk while driving...I prefer my CD's, my Sirius Satellite. People who talk while shopping, give me a F***** break. What is so damn important that you have to talk all damn day????

Oh, I just love drinving about 80 MPH on the 405 on the fastline, and chatting away with my girlfriends on my cellphone....NOT!!!!If I see another stupid bitch, who is not paying attention on what she is doing while she is driving because she is on her cell phone, I am going to follow that bitch home and God only knows what I am going to do!!!!;)

Now after reading your words there was a song that started to play in me head, and I am being sincere. Maybe you've heard it before, it goes a little sumthin like theis, "Did . . . you ever know that you're my hero, and everything I would like ta be. I could fly higher than an eagle, cause darlin you are the wind beneath my wings."
Again thank you :happyface

Kids abuse cell phones if they own one. And their parents are usually the ones that pay for their kids' phones.
When I was 14, I only knew a handful of people who owned cell phones, and none were kids. I remember a time when people carried around cell phones in briefcases.

I gotcha!!!!!!!! I know what you mean. Man, i had one chick flip me off and it was her friggin fault because she wasn't paying attention while driving, she almost hit me!!! who the f**K was she!!??? I wish to God they would hurry up and make it against the law to talk while driving. i have made it clear to my family that the phone in my car is only for emergencies (OnStar) and also for making a call while PARKED!! I rarely use it when I am driving. I have used it for 911 purposes like accidents or such. It comes in handy when one has car problems. My kids have called me while I drive, but it's hands free. They usually call me to tell me something important, but never to bug me with stupid stuff like "What's for dinner?" or some crazy dumb crap. My conversation is limited to less than 30 seconds. Not even my friends have the number, just my immediate family.
Who here remembers BEEPERS???????
Dude111 07-27-2021, 12:32 PM People think it's so weird that I don;t have a cell phone.I dont have one Soloman... I dont wanna be tracked, have my activities kept track of on it but the most important thing I dont like is constant RF radiation.... I dont want that the most!!
Penny Lane 07-27-2021, 01:31 PM I don't have a cell phone but my hubby does. I hate talking on the phone!
I have one now. Just a flip phone. I haven't graduated to a smart phone yet. I really only use my cell for texting which I don't do often. The only person I really talk to a lot on the phone is my sister but I use my Magic Jack phone connected to my computer. I no longer have a landline. I have also pretty much given up my PC since I got my laptop. but my magic jack is on my PC so it's still plugged in. I also use my PC to run my printer and scanner.:)
Caroline13 07-27-2021, 01:44 PM I've made it to 83 soon and love my land line, and my desk top. Keep gadgets and "stuff" a low priority in my life. I don't love to talk on the phone that much anymore, say what I need to and get off. A sign of the time in my life, I suppose. Worked thru all the love lives and trials and tribulations with friends and that is done.
Was close a few times to getting a cell phone but did not, made it thru what was the reason I thought to get one. A friend even gave me his mom's old cell and it's still in my drawer. Never activated it. To all -- to each his own. Right.
Dude111 07-27-2021, 01:55 PM Good for you Penny,a flip phone is good..... I dont think your info can be tracked on those......
GentlemanJim 07-27-2021, 02:13 PM I had a cell phone a few years ago, had it in my pocket, and it managed to butt dial 9-1-1.
I was sitting on a bench, in a public park, along a part of our bike path system where cars cannot even go. The nearest public road was like 3/4 mile away.
Suddenly I spied a local police patrol car approaching me, prowling down the bike path. Pulls right up to me and stops and asks "Are you Mr. (my last name)?" After I replied with a bewildered "Yes", ...they explained and said they were just concerned that I might be in distress.
To which I replied, "well I wasn't until just now"
They can really triangulate with those towers, and there is a genuine privacy issue there for anyone wanting to remain off the grid.
Dude111 07-27-2021, 03:03 PM Wow im glad everyone was ok buddy!!!!!
GentlemanJim 07-27-2021, 05:15 PM My well being is really so secondary to the point I was trying to make.
The fact that they could pinpoint my location to within a few dozens of feet, and know to ask for me by name is the relevant point. I'm sure they have the resources available to do a reverse look up, and instead of "solving" there is a phone of interest, who has this phone, and where is it's exact location?, they could just as easily solve where is mr X at this moment?...and use that to track me down.
For anyone not wanting to be found, that ability is kinda chilling.
Theda Bara 07-27-2021, 06:25 PM I have one for emergencies only, especially while I am driving.

KurtfromPitts 07-28-2021, 10:45 AM I'd to have one myself, an I-pad maybe.
HuntingtonM15 07-28-2021, 12:22 PM I got my first cell phone in 2004. It was basic and looking back, pretty awful. My first few phones were awful, actually. I didn't get an iPhone until 2013. There's been no looking back since then. I wouldn't ever go with anything else.
Caroline13 07-28-2021, 02:24 PM As I see it from my long years, it's the newest addiction in our society. People can't be without their phones and need to be doing something all the time when waiting for an appt or the likes. I see it everywhere, and then there is me, sitting in amusement. At restaurants, omg, the phone is at their foods.

I remember one time I was over at my sister’s and saw my nephew bring his phone to the bathroom with him. LOL. Talk about weird.
Torgo 07-28-2021, 03:14 PM I have one, my wife has one, and my daughter. It's nice to have these when you're on the road in case of any emergency, since pay phones are basically obsolete (at least around here). It's a bit of comfort knowing my wife, or daughter if they have any kind of emergency can make a call.

Oh people take them everywhere, so many sleep with them, at their sides, under their pillow etc. Nuts and addicted.
GentlemanJim 07-28-2021, 04:28 PM It does get irritating when you are standing in line to order at some place like McDonalds, and the person in front of you is yakking on their phone the entire time the person in front of them is ordering, and then when it's their turn at the register... they haven't even started to figure out what they want to order.
First things first for some, I suppose.

I have a 4 or 5 year old Droid that I dropped in a toilet a few months after I bought it. Only thing that stopped working was the charging port, so I had to do wireless charging. I use it to receive texts and use apps or the Internet when I'm bored and in a waiting room or something. Basically it's a tablet with a cell signal. No one calls me, but then I don't call anyone either.
My first phones were a prepaid Tracfone Wireless flip phone then a Verizon Wireless flip phone. I didn't get an iPhone until a few years ago.
Crusinforabrusin2.5 07-30-2021, 07:39 AM I have a phone, but rarely use it. It's an Android and I've had it for the last 5 years. No use for an IPhone. I do use my Laptop for browsing and schoolwork but that's it.
stevea 07-30-2021, 12:14 PM I never got one. I do admit there's times when I would've liked to have one:
1. To tell someone I'm running late.
2. To tell someone I can't find your house or apt. using your directions.
3. To take a quick picture or text someone who thinks everyone can.
Here are some irritants about them:
1. The guy who thinks he's a VIP and comes in a public place babbling with someone, using it as a speakerphone, LOUD. IF I ACKNOWLEDGE YOU'RE IMPORTANT, will you use it like a normal phone please?
2. The person who has to entertain everyone in a public place with their videos. I DON'T CARE TO HEAR YOUR VIDEO!

I can relate to your points. Since I'm probably the oldest here, I've worked to keep my life more simple and as I see it the more technology the less simple, so I've gotten thru it all without a phone glued to me. There were a couple times over the years when I was in a bind of sorts and asked a person if I could make a quick call on their phone and they fine with that.
