Details are a bit sketchy so I'll do my best...

- Was televised in the early 80s

- Japanese animated series

- Set in space. Crew of spaceship (that looked like a battleship that fired huge blasts of light from its stern .. or bow) had to travel to a far off system (galaxy??) to retrieve ?? (something meant to help save Earth) and then travel back to Earth in a certain amount of time.

Sorry, this is all I can recall. It was an English-language cartoon though it was definitely created in Asia (most likely Japan).

Does any of this ring a bell? I hope someone here can identify this series. Thanks in advance.

Best,
Terrence

I believe you're thinking of "Star Blazers."
Great show. I loved watching it when I was a kid.

I think the original title of the series in Japan was "Battleship Yamoto."

Welcome to Sitcoms Online.

Here's a bit more info on STAR BLAZERS: the series was Japan's SPACE CRUISER YAMATO dubbed into English and was set in the year 2199. It
chronicles the story of a group of patriots, known as Star Force, whose
mission is to save the Earth from an enemy space fleet. Heading the Star Force fleet is Captain Avatar, whose crew includes Cadet Derek Wildstar, the second-in-command; Nova, Wildstar's girlfriend and the team's radar operator; Cadet Mark Venture, chief of operations; IQ-9, a robot; Sandor, the chief mechanic; and Dr. Sane, the team's physician. There were three serialized adventures (running between 24 and 26 episodes each): "Quest for Iscandar," "The Comet Empire," and "The Bolar War." The show was syndicated in 1979. There were also three short-lived comic book series, published by Comico and Argo Press, in 1987 and 1995.

The one thing I remember when I first saw "Star Blazers" was that the show had a continuing storyline, just like the prime time shows did.

Trivia time!

What was the name of the impressive weapon that the Star Force used to defeat their enemies?
