This week will be the last week of Howard Stern's show on Infinity before he goes to Sirius Satelite Radio. Let me get things straight, I'm not a big fan of Howard Stern where he does his stuff that is inappropriate for radio. This Friday, he will be leaving. My avatar for this week will be a picture of Howard Stern. On my sig, it will be 4 more days before the end of his contract at Infinity (a Viacom station before separation next month). He will be on his now former K-Rock (WXRK soon to be WFNY) until this Friday. Stern is still on and he's got four more days to go until he leaves. Let me tell you the story, I listened to "Board Reflections" during the last year where he was critising about Stern's leaving to go to Satellite Radio and all kinds of stuff. I've seen those in past articles in the Daily News, Radio & Records on several forums like Radio-Info and the New York Radio Message Board where they were talking about Stern many times. I know that coming this Friday, he is gone! This is the thread I'm going to start with about his departure to Satellite Radio. Only 3 more weeks left until K-Rock is signing off for good, in the mortal words of Porky Pig "Th-th-that's all folks!". Free-FM will be the next big thing in FM radio. Me neither, I have two airchecks on Stern's Infinity show on the soon to be WFNY (where WXRK will drop its call letters a month from now as well as the K-Rock moniker). It features interviews like Bob Saget and John Stamos. Two former actors from "Full House" where they played Jesse Katsopolis and Danny Tanner. This was from the Olsen Twins News site. He's gone, and now Infinity's Joel Hollander has to kick-start his company--and broadcast radio.

These are difficult days for Viacom's Infinity Broadcasting. Dec. 16 is Howard Stern's last live show before he moves to Sirius Satellite Radio. Infinity's revenues are flat at $2.1 billion since 2000, while Viacom's cable revenues are up 61% over the same time. When $22.5 billion (sales) Viacom splits in two next month, Infinity Radio will account for 15% of revenue of new parent CBS, compared with 9% at Viacom.

Joel Hollander, 49, was tapped in January to see the company through this transition. A founder of the first 24-hour sports radio station, WFAN in New York, and former head of Westwood One, Hollander immediately embarked on big changes. He fired disc jockeys at 11 stations in favor of the "Jack" format, which relies on prerecorded witticisms and a smorgasbord of music genres, and last month he announced that former Van Halen front man, David Lee Roth, would take over for Stern in markets like New York, Philadelphia and Boston. He spoke with Forbes' Dorothy Pomerantz.

By the end of 2006, 40 million people will be listening to iPods. In five years satellite radio subscriptions will go from 7 million to 20 million. Is broadcast radio dead?

Absolutely incorrect. We dispelled that myth when we changed [KCBS in Los Angeles] to Jack on St. Patrick's Day, and 121 days later the radio station went from 18th to first. If you have the right environment for music, the right content, people will find it, and they found it in a very short period of time in Los Angeles.

But you've been booed in New York for changing WCBS from oldies to Jack. Arbitron now ranks the station 22nd out of 40 there.

It's never easy to be criticized, but when you make a global decision and you take a piece of content and spread it over 11 stations and you're successful on 10 of them, I'll take that batting average any day of the week.

Will you miss Howard Stern?

You know what? It's been a lot of fun with him. As difficult as it is at times, he's a brilliant broadcaster, and he has made a lot of money for advertisers, for shareholders and for employees. From that aspect certainly we'll miss him, but the world goes on, and we'll be successful, and hopefully he'll be successful, but not as successful as us.

You've asked investors to be patient and give you as much as two years before judging your post-Stern strategy. Isn't that a lot to ask?

When you're replacing someone who's been on the air for 20 years, it takes some time. Will it take 24 months? I don't think so. We live in a society where people want quick answers, whether it's Wall Street or sports or politics. You have to be patient.

Do you think radio needs more-radical changes?

No. It's content. Whoever has the best content will win. But on the technology side there are a lot of investments going on in high-definition radio right now. There are going to be all these side channels in the next three to seven years [because HD gives broadcasters extra bandwidth for additional programming]. That to me would be the only radical change.

With 3 days remaining before he departs, someone posted on NYRMB where Frank was saying:

Mel Karmazin was on the Howard Stern show on Tuesday morning (for only the second time).

He said that one of the lowest points of his association with Stern over the years was having to pay off the FCC 1.7 million dollars, which he called "ransom".

He felt that they would have definitely won if the FCC had allowed the case to go to court.
Infinity had applications before the FCC, which were held up. They couldn't do business, and they couldn't get their day in court, so they settled... Something Mel regrets he was forced to do.

Radios are under $50 and service is like $13 a month. But the more you sign up for the bigger discount you get. I believe if you sign up for a year you get a month free, or for 2 years you get 2 months free. I also think you can get a lifetime service for like $4-500

I don't have Sirius and I don't have any immediate plans to get it, but I am definitely mulling it over because of Stern.

I like Howard, always have, and it will be hard not to hear him anymore on the drive to work.

And not to confuse anyone, this is Howards last week on infinity, but he doesn't start new shows on Sirius until January 9, 2006. I believe Howard already has a channel on Sirius right now (100 or 101). When he starts his show, he will have 2 channels all to himself!

I listened to "Board Reflections" today and Allan Sniffen (who runs the Musicradio WABC website) was saying that Howard Stern is leaving free radio to go to Satellite Radio. That song was a remake of a Louis Prima song. He is taking over Stern to mornings on a new station 92.3 Free-FM starting January 3rd. Good luck to David, he will sing "Just a Gigolo" before he goes on the air.

No thanks! I have Howard's last show on terrestrial radio on my iPod. Matt Craig (from Big Apple Airchecks (http://www.bigappleairchecks.com)) was posted on Radio-Info the other day that I have the last Howard Stern show. It was separated in two parts. This was from WXRK (K-Rock) before Free-FM come January 3 where the station changed its calls to WFNY.

Not really! You've Sirius Satellite Radio for those of you are going to listen to Stern starting January 6th as Allan Sniffen would say on "Board Reflections" according to this link on the previous thread, "You gonna have to pay for 'em!"

There is a couple of Detroit, Michigan "Shock Jocks" called Drew and Mike from a radio station called WRIF, and you can get them on Videotron cable radio up here.

They are kind of funny. They play these funny audio clips from a couple of old drunks called "Ray and Pete" who lived in a San Fransisco apartment back in the 1980's.

I wonder if they have a CD from these two. I can't find it on the Internet.
