Even though this show aired in the 70s, it was based more on a 50s TV sitcom, where the dad worked and the mom stayed home. Some 3 years later, the Mary Tyler Moore show would mark the end of women being protrayed as homemakers.

I have no children, but I imagine 6 children and house that big may have overwhelmed a housekeeper. I remember seeing Carol help with the kids lunches in the morning and when she asked Bobby to clean the fireplace, she looked to be dressed for housecleaning. Alice didn't drive, so Carol had to chauffer when Mike was at work. She seemed to be involved with the kids school too.
