LOS ANGELES - Richard Pryor, the caustic yet perceptive actor-comedian who lived dangerously close to the edge both on stage and off, died Saturday. He was 65.

Pryor died shortly before 8 a.m. of a heart attack after being taken to a hospital from his home in the San Fernando Valley, said his business manager, Karen Finch. He had been ill for years with multiple sclerosis, a degenerative disease of the nervous system.

“He did not suffer, he went quickly and at the end there was a smile on his face,” his wife, Jennifer Pryor, said. “I’m honored now that I have an opportunity to protect and continue his legacy because he’s a very, very, very amazing man and he opened doors to so many people.”

I don't think anybody who likes comedy doesn't respect Richard Pryor. He was one of the best and he will be forever missed. RIP!!

when I was a little kid, I used to watch The Toy over and over and over when it was on HBO, my parents shielded me away from his stand-up as a kid (because I was a kid), so The Toy and Bustin' Loose is what I will always best remember him for.

Later on I did see his stand-up and was blown away, he was phenomenal and one would have to be deaf, dumb and blind to not realize just how influencial he is in the world of comedy, without him, there would've been no Eddie Murphy, no Chappelle, no Margaret Cho, etc...

This is terrible news. I've always been a fan of Richard Pryor. He was a comic genius and one of kind.

So very sad to hear of Richard's passing, as he was a brilliant-yet-troubled comedian. He will indeed be missed... :(

RIP Richard:( He had suffered in his last years. Multiple Sclerosis, heart bypass. I surely hope that he has found peace at last.:(
