View Full Version : Which decade had the worst fashions?
Number 9 Dream 12-10-2005, 12:17 PM I saw a program last night that profiled 4 decades in to an hour each on the Women's Entertainment network. The show was called "I can't believe I wore that!" It was actually a really fun show...I recommend it highly.
Anyway, it got me thinking-- Which decade was the worst for fashion? The show profiled the 70's, 80's, 90's, and 2000's.
Personally, I think the 80's were a fashion DISASTER. Spandex leggings (for that chic "aerobic" look), mullets, shirts hanging off the shoulder, acid wash jeans... It's all too much.
Which do you think is the worst?
bad_boy 12-10-2005, 01:34 PM the 90's
PZelda 12-10-2005, 01:44 PM Hands down, the 90's. (Yes, I love 70's and 80's fashion)
That was when the messy look started being "in" and as far as I'm concerned, it's still going on some 13-14 years later. :barf: First, you had your grunge clothes in the first half of the 90's, and a lot more people started wearing their hair in dreadlocks. YEEEEEEECH!!!!! omg: And then there was the sheer amount of plaid clothing. Who thought THAT was cool? My sis had this HIDEOUS plaid button-down that she loved so0o0o0o0o0 much and the colors CLASHED. EWWWW. And then they targeted the horrid 1970s revival, starting in 1996, towards my age group at the time. THAT WAS AWFUL, and I took part in it. *hangs head in shame* I had polyester tops and everything...Ewwwww. I even owned a few pairs of bellbottoms, the WORST jeans ever invented. Thankfully I grew out of that by 8th grade. Flared pants are OK, but ABSOLUTELY NOT bellbottoms. :nonono: I started to develop my own style when I got to high school many years ago and so far, I have yet to regret my fashion decisions.
Gimme acid wash denim, big hair, shoulder pads and pastels any day!!! I hope the trends of the 90's never make a revival.

Oh, I remember the 70's revival well  I took part in it myself but I can't say I'm ashamed (I love 70's clothes). I was also a grunge girl in 5th and 6th grade-- flannel shirts, ripped pants, band tee-shirts with a thermal underneath (and a thumb hole cut out  ), and Doc Marten boots.
Still, for me personally, the 80's were just garish.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 12-10-2005, 02:05 PM Yeah...I definately have to agree with the 80's. Those sweaters and the hair. Good Lord. I love the 80s, but the style from it suckksssf.
gilligan fanatic 12-10-2005, 02:09 PM the fashion of today
Mijada 12-10-2005, 02:44 PM The 80's were the worst imo. Big hair, shoulder pads, tight jeans, parachute pants, those glittery over the top blouses and those Michael Jackson style jackets with all the zippers. Can't believe I actually used to wear that stuff.
Janice Johnson 12-10-2005, 02:52 PM The 80's were the worst imo. Michael Jackson style jackets with all the zippers.
Hey, do you mean like the leather outfit he wears in BAD video? or do you mean the kind he wore in Billie Jean and Thriller videos?
Superstar 12-10-2005, 02:56 PM 80s
Sterling Holobyte 12-10-2005, 03:07 PM 70's.
Bellbottoms. Need I say more?.
Nighthawk76 12-10-2005, 03:23 PM This current decade. Everyone looks like they don't care what they look like anymore.
Ireneparalegal 12-10-2005, 03:28 PM The caveman era...yuck, all those animal prints, just horrible
PrettyinPink55 12-10-2005, 04:04 PM The 80's
I picked the 80s. I liked the afros from the 70s. 90s fashion wasn't that bad. It was 80s that I hated.
Tuesday Weld 12-10-2005, 05:11 PM 90's and 2000's, in my opinion.

I'm referring to the jacket he wore in the Beat It video. The red one with all the zippers and those silvery patches on the shoulders. There were boys at my school who wore those things.
Moonlight Lady 12-10-2005, 05:57 PM Today's fashions.
I loved the 70's and 80's fashions.
MsOrange 12-10-2005, 07:12 PM the 80s...
i've thought about this before, how weird is it going to be when 10 or 15 years from now our children, or relative children's etc, and going to be mocking a fashion that we thought was just the IT thing.
Dean Winchester 12-10-2005, 07:28 PM the 70's and 80's were both loaded with horrible styles, from platform shoes to mullets (I am sorry, there is no valid explanation for the existance of that, lol), ironically I think the music of the 70's and 80's was the best, lol
Chelsea 12-10-2005, 07:30 PM mullets

dawsongirl 12-11-2005, 03:09 AM Early 80s...well, that whole preppy 80s thing scared me too.

 But I agree with that all.
I gotta say though, some guys looked hot in leisure suits.
Living In a '70's Dream 12-11-2005, 03:27 AM I am so sorry, but the fashions of both the 1970s and the 1980s were incredible; full of color, personality, and just plain fun!
Personally, the styles of the 1990s were just boring!
Mijada 12-11-2005, 08:11 AM I gotta say though, some guys looked hot in leisure suits.
Richard Dawson especially ;)
The 80's.
Pink Reeboks and Members Only jackets.
The horror...the horror...
;)

Agreed. Plus, the eighties gave his the yuppie look - geled hair and strached shirts with separate collars - plus those fluorescent sport coats and puffed-up hair Duran Duran always sported in their videos. Not to mention the Jersey Girl hairstyle, which invloved setting with jumper cables.
Don't forget the sockles trend started by Don Johnson.

The Jersey Girl hairstyle ruled. Big hair is hot.
Nighthawk76 12-11-2005, 10:16 PM I can't believe only three people voted for the 2000's. The styles today are terrible. It is like people go out of their way to look unkept. :barf:

I guess today's only bothers me when I see business people looking like crap, or when I see the random teenager wearing their pants too low or too tight. Like my cousin.
Speaking of, she likes these jeans that look like someone drove over them and set them on fire and gave them to Cujo and spilled bleach on them. I'm not paying $50 for jeans that look more worn than stuff I've seen in garage sales.

TheGreatPretender 12-11-2005, 10:37 PM I liked the mid to late 80s it had kind of a fine line between  and puke:. The 90s were really stupid though the dreadlocks the nose rings. ewwwww
swedeace 12-11-2005, 11:41 PM Hahahahaha.....
-Parachute pants
-M.C. Hammer pants
Funny names!!
You wanna know what Europeans call them? Banana pants! Makes sense!
Anyway.... I voted for the 70s because the clothes looked like soooo much trouble to dress in. The full outfits, the hairstyles, the polyester, etc... it just seemed expensive. I dunno how else to explain it...
James 02-28-2007, 03:59 AM I may be a little late to respond to this poll, but my vote goes to the 1980s. I had no problems with the big hair and parachute pants (just for the record I had neither), but looking back I hated those short shorts I had to wear for gym class that weren't that much bigger than Daisy Dukes. I didn't mind wearing them at the time, but I would never wear them today. If you want to know what I'm talking about, check out what the male tennis players of the day like John McEnroe were wearing. I mean, when I see pictures of NBA players in the 1980s I'm like, "They wore THAT?!?!"
Fortunately it's practically unheard of to see a guy in them in this day and age.
Number 9 Dream 02-28-2007, 10:48 AM Ha, I remember when I started this thread :) Anyway, I might have to take back my statement a little--I think the 2000's are slowly becoming worse than the 80's ohno:
Penny Lane 02-28-2007, 11:07 AM This current decade. Everyone looks like they don't care what they look like anymore.
Yep! I agree!:D
Fleet 02-28-2007, 04:44 PM The caveman era...yuck, all those animal prints, just horrible
Yeah, but what decade is that? :D
I would pick the '70s...
Bell-bottoms, those horrible platform shoes (which even men wore), long hair (on men), open shirts, big lapels, practically all the high schools girls had their hair parted in the center (Marcia Brady style), gaudy "gold" on men, etc.
Best: The '50s! :happyface
Race's Girl 02-28-2007, 05:11 PM I think it had to be the 80s
catlover79 02-28-2007, 05:41 PM As much as I love the '80s, the music, movies, TV shows and toys, the fashions were hideous!!
Brad Russ 03-01-2007, 02:34 AM I didn't live this decade, but from pictures I've seen, alot of the styles from the 70's looked pretty ridiculous. The 80's was also a pretty funny looking decade. LOL!!
JNSBSB 03-05-2007, 12:37 AM But for me, the worst decade for fashion..is this current decade. I absolutely loathe the long, baggy short look with the ski hats, with the black shoes with the white socks rolled up (a hideous look, that is ugly as all hell, too); this is a terrible time for men's fashions; the shaved heads, the baggy clothes, the ski masks hats, the rolled up socks, total "gangsta" look (that is unappealing and unattractive); for women, I noticed a retro trend (from a style that was quite popular in the late 70s) women wearing tight jeans that are tucked under, high heeled boots; the look is flattering, and I have been searching all over town for a pair of boots to copy that look, but I have been unsuccessful!
You think this decade's fashion is bad, try the fashion of the Medievel decade!
