Kelly Clarkson's song "Addcited" can be mistook for being about drugs, but its really about being "addicted" to someone, like, loving them. Most people get the metaphor, though.

Thanks for bring up this topic, Janice. In light of this Christmas season, there is popular lyric from a popular Christmas song that I just realized I may have misunderstood all this time. Perhaps someone can clarify and set me straight once and for all.

I realized that I may have been wrong after finding out that the plural of "reindeer" is also reindeer and not reindeers. Therefore, "one reindeer" and "eight reindeer" are both gramatically correct.

The popular Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer contains the following lyrics:

then one foggy Christmas eve
Santa came to say:
"Rudolph with your nose so bright
won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"
then how the reindeer loved him

You can see I bolded the last line as that is the one that I may have misunderstood for all my life. The confusion lies in who exactly "the reindeer" and "him" are referring to. Here is my definition and the probable definition:

My Definition:
The Reindeer = Rudolph
Him = Santa Claus

In other words, I thought it was referring to Rudolph loving Santa Claus because Santa chose him to guide his sleigh.

Probable Definition:
The Reindeer = the eight other reindeer
Him = Rudolph

I realized that it may be referring to the fact that Rudolph finally received the love and respect of the eight other Reindeer because Santa chose Rudolph to guide his sleigh.

If the next line is "as they shouted out with glee", then it is likely referring to the latter definition. But I have also heard the next line as "as he shouted out with glee" which can certainly refer to my definition as it is Rudolph congratulating himself.

Again, all this involves knowing that the plural of reindeer is also reindeer. If you didn't know that, then did you think the way I did and feel that "then how the reindeer loved him" is referring to Rudolph loving Santa?
