Come on yall, that scene was not really serious enough for the crowd to be silent. It would have been impossible for someone not to laugh during that scene

I would have expected a *gasp or something like that...if it had been a child on Maude, I don't see anybody would be laughing like that.

IIRC, the audience at first DID laugh but as Penny kept beating and dissing that doll, the laughter abruptly became uncomfortable, strained and then stopped altogether!
Reminds me of how we reacted in our one of high school assemblies when a guest speaker kept talking about his son's crazy driving antics for laughs - and then,at the end, laid the bombshell that that the son's last accident had left the son badly paralyzed for life!:eek: :confused:

I see your point of view...but i think Brian is stating since we already knew at that point that she was being abused, she was now doing to her doll what her mother has said and done to her. It would have been funny had we not known yet what situation Penny was in.

James sarcasm was his way of being funny, yet making a point. That was one of his ways to deal with pain, hurt or anger.

Then you and I weren't watching the same show. Because James said a lot of things that were funny, So no I don't have a bizzare sense of humor I just know what's funny and what's not funny. I didn't say that the whole scene was funny but James did crack me up once and again in that scene.

It was a serious scene, but just like alot of serious scenes in Good Times, a joke, even sarcastic ones were thrown in...that's what was funny. It was understandable why the audience laughed (I laughed too) when his father and him were having that serious conversation. It was also the tension. Haven't any one of you when you have been part of a serious conversation of some sort, said something somewhat funny just to break the tension? That's what James did too, and that's what made the "serious" situations funny.

I can imagine them laughing whoheartedly and uproariously, then thinking, "okay, she can stop now, it's not that funny anymore"(hence the laughing becoming forced). It would not surprise me if an audience member said to the cast, "Hey, she can stop beating up and screaming at that doll! it's not that funny anymore!"
