Does anyone agree that Styx and Kansas sound very similar? I think they do, but that's just my opinion. :lol:

I don't think so, they and Styx were considered Art/Prog rock (as one of their styles).

On certain songs, Kansas does sound like Styx (I think on "Carry On Wayward Son", for example), they sound like Styx.

Yeah, they & Kansas do share some basic qualities. Both American 70s "prog" bands. Both took cues from their Brit counterparts. Dunno if you're familiar w/ really early Kansas. Pre-Steve Walsh when they called themselves Proto-Kaw. (you might've bought that CD)

I always thought of Kansas as "Down-Home Yes, w/ violins thrown in". :)

I think if I hadda compare the 2 closely though, I'd say Kansas was slightly more on the progressive side, while Styx showed signs of a highly commercial sound very early on. Kansas didn't really start showing those colors until "Wayward Son" in '76. A good 6 years after they formed. Compare that to Styx's "Lady", which was a minor local hit as early as '72. Styx tended to throw progressive "moments" in songs.

BTW, as a Styx fan I *Know* you picked up the Wooden Nickel set, right? :) Great to finally have all the early albums remastered properly!

Both bands rocked hard when they wanted to though! Showed their American flavor. We like our rock heavy here! (well, at least back *then* we did)

Y'know you might also like another band called Starcastle. They're another American 70s proggish band in the vein of Styx & Kansas, but they're most well known for being a Yes sound-alike. But I think their "Fountains of Light" album sounds a lot like Styx Meets CS&N....w/ a dash of Yes. ;)
