View Full Version : R&B fans, do you like these one hit wonder singles?
GARFIELDKOOL 12-03-2005, 10:14 PM "She's a Bad Mama Jama"-Carl Carlton
"Let It Whip"-Dazz Band
"Mamma Use To Say"-Junior
"Cutie Pie"-One Way
"Somebody's Watching Me"-Rockwell
"Walking In the Rain"-Oran "juice" Jones
"Ain't Nothing Going On But the Rent"-Gwen Guthrie
I sure did. I know most of these artists made other songs after these, but they never made a hit afterwards. I give props to them anyways.
Dean Winchester 12-03-2005, 11:56 PM She's A Bad Mama Jamma is a classic, when I was a kid I thought it was a Stevie Wonder song.
Let It Whip, The Rain, Somebody's Watching Me, Ain't Nothing Going On But The Rent, all great too.
GARFIELDKOOL 12-04-2005, 12:16 AM Hung Up, you got good taste!
i love rockwell, somebodys watching me is like my theme song lol
LadyBee 12-05-2005, 04:44 PM From that list of tunes I would have to say "Let It Whip" is the best. "Somebody's Watching Me" I like the least out those choices. Michael Jackson was doing the singing! Seriously, can Rockwell sing?
One Way had more hits than "Cutie Pie", although that seems to be the one that's most memorable. "Mr. Groove" "Lady (You Are)" "Don't Think About It" and "Push" were among their hits. And Carl Carlton had a crossover hit with "Everlasting Love" in 1974, but "Mama Jama" is what he's best known for.
What are your opinions of these R&B "one hit wonders"?
"So Fine" Howard Johnson
"Double Dutch Bus" Frankie Smith
vashti1999 12-05-2005, 04:55 PM "Somebody's Watching Me" I like the least out those choices. Michael Jackson was doing the singing! Seriously, can Rockwell sing?
He might not be a great singer, but I loved that album. "Somebody's Watching Me" was probably my least favorite song on the album. My favorites were Obscene Phone Caller and Wasted Away. I guess I liked it so much because musically it sounded Prince-ish.
What are your opinions of these R&B "one hit wonders"?
"So Fine" Howard Johnson
"Double Dutch Bus" Frankie Smith
So Fine was okay, I haven't heard it in years. Double Dutch Bus was a song I liked as a kid, so that pretty much explains how I think of it. I consider it a novelty song.
BartSmith 12-05-2005, 05:50 PM I LOVE Somebody's watching Me, and for the record, Mike only sang backup in the chorus. Rockwell sang the main verses and even sang(spoke) some in the chorus.;)
Nighthawk76 12-05-2005, 06:00 PM Somebody's Watching Me is a great song. and one that I can relate to more then I wish.

I forgot to post "So Fine" LadyBee. When I was posting, I was going crazy because I knew i had left somebody out. Thanks.

I love these songs...but, One Way had a few hits. I have their greatest hits CD. I know, you probably mean number one hits, but I find that alot of their songs are JAAAAAMMMMMMMIN'!!!!!!
isiahthomas 12-08-2005, 06:11 PM Dazz Band had more than one hit. They had plenty of hits like Knock Knock, Let It All Blow, Heartbeat, Joystick, Swoop I'm Yours, Keep It Live, The Hot Spot. Dazz Band were tight back in the day. Skip Martin who was the lead singer has a nice voice. Remember Timex Social Club's Rumors song? They were a one hit wonder. Kashif was a one hit wonder. I like his song Ooh Lover Turn On Me. That's his best song i think. Kashif produced and sang on Whitney Houston's Thinking About You song on her first album. I love that song. Vanity 6 was a one hit wonder with the song Nasty Girl. Appolonia 6 was a one hit wonder also with the song Sex Shooter. Shannon was a one hit wonder with the song Let The Music Play. Junior had another hit song besides Mama Used To Say called Too Late. He also has a song on Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack i like called Do You Really Want My Love. Frederick was a one hit wonder with the song Callin Your Name(I'll Be Gentle). A woman sang with him on the song. This love song was a hit for him in the early 80's. It used to get played at night on 93 FM WZAK in Cleveland a lot when i was a kid. Frederick is from Cleveland, Ohio. I read he works at a hospital now in Cleveland. Remember Eugene Wilde who sang the song Gotta Get You Home Tonight? That song was a hit for him in the early 80's. He was a one hit wonder. Club Nouveau were a one hit wonder with the song Lean On Me. Jealousy, Situation #9 and Why You Treat Me So Bad were also hits for them.
isiahthomas 12-08-2005, 06:12 PM My mistake about the Kashif song. It was called Ooh Lover Turn Me On.

Shannon had two hits...i have them on CD's...
isiahthomas 12-08-2005, 06:14 PM Remember the group Skyy that had the early 80's hit song Call Me? They were a one hit wonder. Mary Jane Girls were one hit wonders with the songs All Night Long and In My House. Remember Klymaxx? They were a one hit wonder with the song Meeting In The Ladies Room. They also did a love song with Howard Hewett called Say Yes. Force MD's were one hit wonders with the song Tender Love. Tears is another song of their's that was a hit.
isiahthomas 12-08-2005, 06:15 PM Remember RJ's Latest Arrival? They had the songs Shackles On My Feet and Baby I'm Sorry. They were one hit wonders. O'Bryan was also a one hit wonder with the songs You And I and Love Line.

Maryjane girls also had Candyman, and that's three hits under their belt, so they can't be one hit wonder...Skyy had three hits also...Klymaxx had three hits, one of them was "I Miss You"

You're right, and just for the record, Loose Ends had one hit with "Hangin' On a String" and McFadden and Whitehead had one hit with "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" Those are two groups I forgot to mention in addition to Shannon.
GARFIELDKOOL 12-08-2005, 08:25 PM Musical Youth with "Pass the Dutchie"

OMG, I couldn't stand that song...sorry
Ireneparalegal 12-10-2005, 01:01 AM There were two girl groups of the late 70's. One called Hot they had a hit called "Angel In Your Arms" and the other group is called High Inergy yes, that's how they spelled their name; their song was called "You can't turn me off (in the middle of turning me on)
There was also a group called Dynasty with Alton McClain.
vashti1999 12-10-2005, 02:51 AM You're right, and just for the record, Loose Ends had one hit with "Hangin' On a String".
Loose Ends had hits with Hangin' On A String, Stay A Little While Child, Slow Down, Watching You, Mr. Bachelor, Don't Be A Fool, Cheap Talk, Sweetest Pain, Nights of Pleasure. You're in the NY area, you must've heard all those songs on urban radio.
James 12-10-2005, 02:57 AM Remember Klymaxx? They were a one hit wonder with the song Meeting In The Ladies Room. They also did a love song with Howard Hewett called Say Yes.
Yes, I remember Klymaxx. I mainly remember "I Miss You". Oh, and for the record the said love song is called "I'd Still Say Yes." I also remember Climax, a one hit wonder from 1972 with the hit "Precious and Few."
Not only do the two groups have names that sound exactly the same, but both of them started in Los Angeles!
GARFIELDKOOL 12-10-2005, 10:50 AM Loose Ends had hits with Hangin' On A String, Stay A Little While Child, Slow Down, Watching You, Mr. Bachelor, Don't Be A Fool, Cheap Talk, Sweetest Pain, Nights of Pleasure. You're in the NY area, you must've heard all those songs on urban radio.
Yes, I have. But those other songs you mentioned weren't big hits. I liked some of them, that's why I listed Loose Ends as one hit wonders.

They had four top ten singles. Both Hangin On A String and Slow Down hit #1 on the R&B chart. Watching You hit #2 and Don't Be A Fool hit #10.

I may have misunderstood you, Vashti about me being in the NY area. If you meant NYC, I am not in that area, I am in upstate New York.

I've only caught the last half of "Angel In Your Arms". "You Can't Turn Me Off..." is a great song. I think a personnel shuffling stifled High Inergy's momentum. But don't quote me on that.
"It Must Be Love" was sung by Alton McClain & Destiny. I downloaded that song and think it's good, but it's sounds like The Emotion's "The Best of My Love".
The group Dynasty recorded for Solar Records, I believe. Among Their hits "I Don't Wanna Be A Freak (But I Can't Help Myself)" "Here I Am" and "I Just Begun to Love You". I could see how you mixed up their names.

Ah, yes. I have a genuine fondness for Loose Ends.
I have their first three U.S. albums. "Zagora", imo is the best. Their last "The Real Chuckeeboo" is a disappointment. For some reason, "Gonna Make You Mine" was left off that album.

Thanx Lady Bee, you know Destiny and Dynasty, i get those two names mixed up all the time...thanx for catching my goof...duh!!! lol
Yeah, those are the hits, i downloaded them too, it took forever though, I had to keep searching and searching then lo and behold one late evening i found a file and downloaded it...there is a particular song that I heard on the radio when they were playing their 80's R&B mixes, and of course, the name of the song wasn't mentioned, neither was the artist, it was an awesome JAAAAM!!!! I had tried doing a lyric search but no luck. As a matter of fact, I can't even find the little sheet I had written some of the lyrics on. I bet if I posted here, someone would help me. S**T! I need to find those lyrics.

Technically, neither McFadden & Whithead nor Shannon are one hit wonders.
Shannon followed up "Let The Music Play" with "Give Me Tonight".
While McFadden & Whithead hit the top 40 with "I Heard It In A Love Song", but who the hell remembers that one?

McFadden & Whitehead were songwriters before they wrote their own hit. They could've just sang their own songs and had more hits.
I also have Shannon's two songs. I like Give Me tonight better than the other one.

Perhaps. Hmmm... you think maybe their demos are sitting in a vault somewhere waiting to be released? That'd be interesting to hear.
I don't understand what she is saying in the chorus on "Give Me Tonight". I saw the (ultra lame) video a little while back and still couldn't decipher what was said.
vashti1999 12-10-2005, 04:20 PM It's something like this, I think:
Give me tonight then if you don't wanna stay
Girl, just forget it
You'll see I'm right, you won't get to go away
Love ain't gonna let it
Back in the day, I liked this one more than Let The Music Play too. I still have the vinyl 12" single.
Dean Winchester 12-10-2005, 04:23 PM "Do You Wanna Get Away" is another good one from Shannon that was a hit in its day (top 10 R&B, #49 Hot 100) but seems to be forgotten. All in all, of her three hits, I like "Let The Music Play" least. It's definately a classic for it's genre but it's been played out over the years. Give Me Tonight still sounds great IMO.

Let me clear up what I posted, I know, I posted the info wrong: McFadden & Whitehead wrote songs for other artists before writing their big hit. They are songwriters in the industry. I can't recall some of the songs they wrote, but I remember seeing them on some show and they listed their songs that they wrote for other artists and I was like in shock. I was like "Damn!" they should have kept those songs for themselves. But I guess they make good money either way.
BTW here are the lyrics to Shannon's song:
Walking sadly through the park
I hear crying in the darkness
And thought I act like I cannot hear
Their situation is very clear:
A girl who's trying to tell her guy
The time has come that they say: "Good-bye"
And his answer tears my heart apart:
Give me tonight
then if you don't wanna stay
Girl
I'll just forget you.
You'll see I'm right
you won't get to go away
Love ain't gonna let you.
Walking with you through the park
Now it's my voice in the darkness.
Just like the girl trying to tell her guy
I'm telling you
we must say "good-bye".
I can't believe when I hear once more
The very words that were said before -
Come from deep within your broken heart:
Give me tonight
then if you don't wanna stay
. . .
I'll give you one night.
Give me tonight
then if you don't wanna stay
. . .
I'll get you one more night.
Give me tonight
give me tonight
give me tonight
Give me tonight
give me tonight
give me tonight
. . .
His voice echoes in the darkness.
Give me tonight
then if you don't wanna stay
. . .
Yes
I'll give you one more night.
Give me tonight
then if you don't wanna stay
LadyBee 12-10-2005, 04:38 PM Thank you Irene & Vashti for the lyrics. :D
I know what you meant Irene. You made me think what if they did record their songs first. I believe they wanted to be recording artists, but were relegated to writing and producing for other acts. :) I should have made my post clearer, sorry for the confusion.
Thanks for bringin up "Do You Wanna Get Away" HUNG UP! Out of those three choices, that's the one I like the least.
vashti1999 12-10-2005, 04:46 PM "Do You Wanna Get Away" is another good one from Shannon that was a hit in its day (top 10 R&B, #49 Hot 100) but seems to be forgotten.
That's right, I forgot all about Do You Wanna Get Away.
There's this dvd called "Graffiti Rock," it was a one time hip hop based show from 1984, sort of an American Bandstand for early rap. There's a performance by Shannon if I remember correctly doing both Give Me Tonight and Let The Music Play. You'll also see Debi Mazar as a dancer on the show. If you can find it, check it out. It was great seeing those old fashions and dances.
isiahthomas 12-26-2005, 12:30 PM Ya'll remember Richard Dimples Fields who had the hit 80's love song She's Got Papers On Me? LOL. That's the only song i remember by him. LadyBee probably remembers him.

I couldn't stand that song. He also had another hit, I can't recall the title though. Oh yeah, it's called "if it ain't one thing, it's another" something like that. both songs, I find terrible.

I own his "Dimples" album with the aformentioned "She's Got Papers On Me". It's actually pretty decent, imo.
That song is okay. I like when Betty Wright tore him a new one after he whined.
He had a few decent songs like "If It Ain't One Thing, It's Another", "I've Got To Learn To Say No" "Let Me Take You In My Arms" & "Jazzy Lady".
From the responses I've gathered, I don't think people are too crazy about his voice.
He died of a stroke a few years ago. :(
Ireneparalegal 01-05-2006, 08:23 PM that's sad, i didn't know that.
isiahthomas 01-06-2006, 05:33 PM Why did Betty Wright diss him Ladybee?
