ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH! I'm so sick of my aunt. For the past 16 years, 6 months, and one day (basically every single day that I've been alive), she has been telling me how to live my life. What to wear, what to eat, what to buy, what doctors to see, what to put in my goddamn coffee in the morning. Usually I just let it go in one ear and out the other, but she's pushing my buttons. Now she's telling me what colleges to apply to and that I shouldn't major in what I want to major in! (which is a BS in Criminal Justice and a Masters in Psychology). She tells me that I will never get into the FBI or CIA because the "physical part is grueling" and they "don't accept many women" and that I'll "end up becoming a security guard". I will not give up on what I want to be in life! If I'm going to fail, I want to fail at least trying to succeed, and not because some old hag who's got no idea what she's talking about tells me I'm going to fail.

How do I get her off my back? I was honestly going to tell her to let me live my own ****ing life, but my mother suggested that may be a little, erm... strong. Any advice on getting her to shut up?

My parents are the same way. They will never change. You can stand up for yourself, but when I did that, it lead to alot of fighting and more aggravation. However, she is your aunt, not your mother, tell her to mind her own fing bizness!!

If she hasn't shut up after 16 years, what do you think she will stop now?

On the other hand, those who bully, only bully those who allow it. You will know what to say and what to do.

And she knows this because I suppose she tried out for the CIA.

I hate people who give you advice like they have a ****ing clue what they're even talking about. Don't listen to this moron...stay strong in your goals!! I know I have no reason to believe you'll fail. Look how well you kicked all the trouble you've been in...you're too tough to let this woman anger you with her so-called, not-asked-for advice.

Thank you all for the resposes, I appreciate it. Nice to see other people are in the same position as me. I'll probably just end up snapping at her one day and then maybe she'll get off my back.

Funny, how my uncle just sits there and lets her talk and says nothing. He's gotta be a ****ing saint to put up with her.

Your uncle probably gave up years ago  I'm still trying to achieve that level of sainthood....just wait until your married and your mother wants to give you unwarranted sex advice for no good reason   You'll run for the hills then

Tell her she has no right to tell you how to live your life--it's your life, NOT hers! And you can also tell her she's not even your mom!

btw jc, is your aunt your Mom's sister or your Dad's sister?

Look at the bright side (not a big one, but nonetheless)...at least your parents, the people you live with, aren't this way. I went through this with my parents last year, and they've finally come around. So, hopefully your aunt will one day too.

So ignoring her hasn't done much justice. Sit her down and talk to her. Tell her why you want to go to the colleges you want to go to. Tell her why you want to major in cj and get a masters in psych. Explain to her that this is your life. She won't be living in the dorms with you, she won't be paying for your college education (will she?), she isn't going to be living your life. Tell her her advice is appreciated, but there's a limit as to how much she should give. You're not even asking for it in the first place. So let her let you live your life. You're almost an adult in legal terms and you can think for yourself...you're not a child. Just...tell her she has no place bossing you into doing what she wants you to do. Is she trying to live her life through yours- trying to get you to do the things she never got to do? Anyway...if this doesn't work, maybe snapping at her one day wouldn't be too bad. ;)

I agree more with InspectorExstead's approach than the bite-her-head-off-first-thing approach.

I think it's important to remember that despite how annoying your aunt may be, presumably she is well-meaning and only trying to look out for you and your future happiness. Of course she's going about it all the wrong way, but that doesn't change her original intent.

I would simply tell her someday exactly what you've told us: something to the effect of noone is going to make me give up my goals or not believe in myself, and I'd rather fail by trying to exceed, etc. Tell her you would really appreciate her support, and that if she cannot give that then you would appreciate her silence.

I would try this approach first before you get nasty.
