I see that he swore at another member on another board. He also apologized, which is more than I can say for other members who call each other names.

A few years ago, before I even knew anything about SitcomsOnline, I got into a fight with some guy on Yahoo, I think he was just going by solomon@webtv.net. We were both in a Good Times Yahoo group and we got into something about how old Bernadette Stanis was. He was being an ass about it and I was like, "who is this *******?"

Later on, I joined SO and started hanging around the Good Times board and eventually got into it over something with some character here. It didn't hit me at first that the same guy who I'm arguing with here was the same guy I argued with in the Yahoo group.

Long story short, even though I got into it with him in the past, he has a side of him where you can't stay mad at him. I would've never imagined this at first, but he's become one of my favorite members. He's always talking about how much he loves this site, so if this is real, I hope it's a temporary thing.

I lurked around here long before I ever joined and the one person who's posts I always read was Solomon's. He has a certain way of posting that even if you disagree with him, you have to laugh. After I joined he was one of the first members I ever talked to and he sure makes SO a fun place to be at. The sitcom boards and the sports boards just won't be the same without him.

When I finally made my way over to Chit Chat in early 2003, I would just lurk and read the threads. I never really did anything but read. I remember seeing threads started by a guy named SOLOMON (the exact typing of the name Solomon aka Retro was going by at the time). I remember thinking, "Okay...That guy is stubborn and off his rocker...Hmmm, I think I'll keep reading his posts..." and when I finally did start posting at CC, I replied to a lot of his threads. Eventually he grew on to me and I stopped thinking he was off his rocker. He's definitely a character. You can't help but like him. He can be inappropriate at times...but we all do the same thing...But you always forgive him in the end.

That's not the case because I Just put banned under my name and it censors it out like it's a bad word lolzl. I wonder what he did. Turn on the air conditioner too high, broke someones feet for being too ugly. Man, what a badass.

hahahahahaha! oh man, this is so great. he was funny sometimes, and when he was i posted "lol" smileys to avoid conflict with him, but i got unbelievably fed up with his ridiculing my depression and saying that i'm clinically insane and "only exist to be laughed at". he made me f-cking sick. and so does any petition trying to get him back.

it's funny. the day before my friend died last may, i made a list of everything i had to do the next day (which i still have just for bad memories) because i had a hectic schedule i couldn't keep track of in my mind, and one of them says "4:15 - go home and fight with solomon" because we were consistently fighting at the time.

HAHAHAHAHAHA.

savageamusement
11-30-2005, 08:28 PM
First off, if anyone has issues with this particular issue, especially a moderator, I enocurage them to discuss it with me personally.
My email again is Savageamusement@comcast.net

It isn't the boards choice when and whom gets banned, and it isn't automatically anyones business. But for the record.

RetroTvCollector was banned for the duration of one week, because he, is required to comply with the SitcomsOnline rules just as any other user is.

We as moderators would be hipocrits if we allowed Vetran Traders to say and do as they wished with no consequences.

The banning was not immediate, a set of emails was sent out, it was requested certain behaviours cease-
Upon agreening to that, and it continued he was banned for one week.

It isn't for life, it wasn't a sentence. He isn't banished. It is merely facts.

There are rules on SitcomsOnline. We have all walks of life, religious faiths, younger users.
And certain rules are made for certain reasons. He can contact me, or another moderator at any time.
He can contact the board owner at any time.
However I do not think the expecation of a user being polite, and respectful to other users is out of the question, nor something I or any other moderator needs to apologize for.

Sitcoms is supposed to be fun. It is supposed to be an enjoyable atmosphere- and we expect the same of all users. He was not singled out, he was not to be made an example out of.
The consequence of being banned, is the same I would have used with any other user for the same situation.
I considered it a cooling off period.

This is not for the board to discuss, and although I welcome any discussion, this is more a discussion that should be held in private, then airing who and why someone was banned.

Some of the reasons list below here, are not accurate, and as assumptions grow so do rumors.

Please forward any complaints or questions you have to me, on this matter- and should you feel you need to question my choice, you can contact any other moderator. I stand by my decision. And my expectations of conduct.

I'm not condoning Solomon breaking the rules, but IMO it sure looks like someone is trying to make an example of himYou could be right about that

Chad Michael Murray
11-30-2005, 08:58 PM
Well firstly, I've been here a little bit more than a month. To me, that's new, considering there are people who have been here like four years longer than I have.

And secondly--yes Janice. I agree. When I said that I think the same rules should apply to everybody, I meant it. I'm not just trying to be rude or contrary.

Everyone lives up to the same standards, and I just believe that's how it should go.

And I'd just like to add that I have no problems with anybody here, Solomon and the rest of you included. I've had nothing but a fun time here so far. Just stating my opinion is all.

Then the same rules should apply to everybody. Let everyone be put on notice -- if they curse at another member, they will receive an automatic BANNING for one week. No questions asked.

Also, technically, nobody was banned for a week with no questions asked. That Moderator said a series of e-mails was sent to Solomon and Solomon agreed to the terms. After violating the terms he agreed to, THEN he was banned. It doesn't sound so unreasonable to me.

PZelda
11-30-2005, 08:58 PM
I never even knew mods could ban people, I thought only Seth and TJ could do that. That's a power I don't feel mods should have.
Tape Trading and Chit Chat (as well as the CC sub-boards) are the largest boards here at SO... So the people who mod the trading and CC boards have higher power than regular mods. A person who merely mods a sitcoms board like, say, Sasette at the Who's the Boss? board, has basic modding duties. But because Janice mods an extremely high-traffic board, she has more powers. I know she has the ability to suspend and ban people, but only in extreme circumstances (Miss Golden, anyone?). The same goes for the tape trading board. It is another high-traffic board so that mod gets more powers than a regular mod.

Mr. Television
11-30-2005, 08:59 PM

For the record
I would just like it stated for the record- that due to decision I mad to ban Retor I have recieved numerous complaints.

And I would like ot point out, the reason the banning took place was due to numerous complaints.

This is the exact situation that a moderator hates.
Being darned if you do and darned if you don't.

Had I ignored this particular situation, I would have had unjustice cries from those stating Vetran users need to set an example and shoudn't be above the rules of conduct.
Had I ignored it, I would have been questioned that I was allowing a Vetran user to say and do as he wishes, no consequences for actions that any other user has to uphold to.

By banning him for a week, I receive complaints that I am beeing to ridgid and my expecations are too high.

No matter what decision I made, there woudl have been a complaint from somewhere.

So my decision was not based on what others thought, or what others wanted done.
My decision was based on rules that are already set in motion, the fact he was contacted and my request to curtain the behaviour denied.
My decision was based on the expecation that all uses have the right to use the site freely and be respected, and that all users be show courteous replies, and allow to share this hobby with a younger section without being exposed to certain language.
My decision was based on the fact that everyone here has the right to be talked to as an adult, maturely and respectfully and not be intimidated.

I stand by my decision.

Anyone who has any complaints on this choice, has every right to go above me, beyodn me and talk to any other modeartors as well as the owner.
If you think you can do a better job, and have more wisdom and insight, I welcome that.

I didn't choose this job for popularity. I chose it for my basic opinion, on upholing basic rights.
I do what I can, as well as I can.
Any complaints on how I do things, can be made to combisthebest in example, or even the owner of the board.
I never claim to be perfect.

My rule of thumb is, I don't want to be treated differently becuase I moderate, and I don't want you as a community to be treated different becuase you don't.
I am sorry so many have a complaint on how things were done this time around, Ironically I have 17 emails thanking me for my choice as well.
You can't please everyone, which is why I didn't choose to do this based on that intention.
Rules are rules, period.
And in my defense, I emailed this user FIRST 3 times to discuss the matter. The behaviour continued. Complaints continued, and ironically, I TRIED to email this user 4 times after that, and received a message that my emails are refused as are my personal messages to him.
So before someone throws me under the coals, try knowing all the facts.
Assumptions only build rumors.

He'll be gone a week, not any longer.

It could say "Sudaflaveegenleevin" under his name, for that matter. He'll still only be gone a week.

He'll be gone a week, not any longer.

You say tomato, they say tomato...except, that different sounding way of saying tomato.

It could say "Sudaflaveegenleevin" under his name, for that matter. He'll still only be gone a week.

Believe it or not there is a difference between a BAN and a suspension.
If you knew the differece, you'd understand.

well we saw Banned and we jumped at it. If we saw suspended we would not its not forever.

I know that. But now everybody knows what the case is, and I just wanted to say what I thought might make people feel better again and that way, people could look at it and think maybe things aren't so bad afterall. ^_^

And okay, if I don't understand, then I don't understand. Educate me and tell me what the difference is between "This member has been suspended for one week" and "This member has been banned for one week."

If there's a difference that I'm unaware of, then I'd like to know.

You are completely missing the point. It said Banned and naturally people reacted to it. Besides, there have been SEVERAL instances where other members have done far worse and received NO punishment what so ever.

Also, technically, nobody was banned for a week with no questions asked. That Moderator said a series of e-mails was sent to Solomon and Solomon agreed to the terms. After violating the terms he agreed to, THEN he was banned. It doesn't sound so unreasonable to me.
I read back a couple of weeks on that forum and Solomon was fine with that one exception.

You're new. You don't know Solomon like the long-time members do. He brings a LOT to this site. He's the only member who I can honestly say, that if he left, SO wouldn't be the same. He screwed up, like many members do. If I banned/suspended members every time they swore at another member, I'd ban at least 10 members a week.

The chance you take with suspending members is that they may not return. I've seen it happen before.

Wow, I check my e-mail and see all this happened.

Solomon did have a few outbursts on the Tape Trading board. He did apologize and the thread was closed. Apparently, he was sent a few warnings via e-mail which I never saw. I don't know if they were sent before or after the fact. My complaint is that the only way I knew about this was about the reported posts on his lanaguage. I was forwarded none of these other e-mails until just now. The moderators thought they were only suspending him for a week when moderators are only able to outright ban people for a set period of time. I was very hesitant to give any mods the power to ban people. Things seemed to have been ok before this when I was the only one suspending/banning people. Of course things are a bit more active on there than they were back then.

I guess the banning policies were never outlined by me, and we've just played things by ear. I definitely feel like I should have been consulted first and shown any e-mails that were sent out.

I've e-mailed Solomon a few times before and tried to reign him in. There have times where I have given serious consideration of suspending him just to cool him down.

Love him or hate him, he is a valuable member of this community and I'd hate to see him leave. A lot of times he jokes, and people don't understand that he is joking. I think people take some of the things he says too seriously.

He still may be suspended for this. I am still reviewing all the facts to see what exactly has transpired.

He never apologized for cussing at me for no reason. His apology was for something he meant to say before he ever cussed and insulted me. I do NOT want any apologies from him but lets get the facts straight, any apology in that thread was never directed towards me.

And my expectations of conduct.
that sounds like a bunch of bull ****....

... do i get banned now? :(

What the heck? SOLOMON banned? That would be arguably the worst event in Sitcoms Online History. The man is not only a legend, but a vital contributer to our awesome community. :cuss:

Glad everything was cleared up. :)

I am going to say this once again-
No one including me ever said I was perfect - Nor claimed to be.
But not every aspect of this was made public.

If someone feels mods shoudn't be able to suspend or ban users, they can contact TJ.

If someone feels that they need to poke at me, you can do so priavelty or publically, I take no offense to being challanged.
But understand saying you disagree with me, is a lot easier, than BEING me.

As a moderator you hear the complaints that others make.
The parents that try to share trading with their kids, and take offense to certain things.
The people who feel attacked or insulted, the ones who leave- the ones who disagree with the rules
The ones who complain about others avatars
The ones that complain about trades.
The ones that need mediation.

As a moderator you check for bad traders, and you get pulled into 3-4 situations a DAY.

There are the retail sales checks, and editing forums.
There are people who post sale ads, and ebay ads, and ads to doenate blood.
There are ridiclous posts on sales and spam-
Then there are previouslly burned traders, who blame the mods for the bad trader even being ON the site.

I do my best, I am not perfect and it is a LARGE LARGE board
I don't get paid, I don't get a lot of sleep some nights and I don't get thanks very often.
But I do make a difference. I do block bad users, I do help mediate nad work things out.
And that doesn't get much recognition.

In this case, I full admit- that TJ should have been consulted. WE have talked about it, and I admit I am learning too.

But making rude comments, or attacking a decision bad or good isnt' going to solve anything. Experience is the only way things change- and this particular situation hadn't happened before.

The RULES do state certain aspects, and I was following, and trying to havea member follow rules.
Anyone can contact Retro and ask, he was emailed he was PMed and there was confusion on HIS end- that resulted in no pm or no email getting through to him, sufficient proof was sent to him on that as well.
Therefore the breakdown in communication certainly did not help matters.

If someone feels they can do a better job, emial TJ and take my position.

I try to do a good job, but the overall result I want is the board to be happy and run smoother.
If I am failing at that, let my pride not hold the board back.

What else can I say.

I have heard nothing but complaints.
Complaints originally as to what was being said, and actions not being taken.
Complaints actiosn taken.
Complaints I shouldn't be allowed to make decisions, complaints that it should haev been a different decision.

If someone knows the secret to pleaseing all the peopel all the time, by all means fill me in.

I'm exhausted form being judged on this situation.

Not a problem, you were just doing what you felt was best as a MOD. But like I said when some of the members saw BANNED, they thought I was gone for good because that's usually what BANNED means. BUt it's over now and I know the rules and will treat everyone with respect. But don't get to stressed out

I think what Savage is saying makes sense. As Solomon said, Savage was doing what he/she thought was right. But it's nice to see Retro Solomon back.

And it was nice to "meet" you, Savage. :) I've never been to the board you moderate, so I'd never seen any of your posts until this thread. But you seem like a nice person, so I throw out friendly sentiments.

Who wants to come carol-singing with me?

Thank you for the warm sentiment..

I have the solution

DUH I don't know why I didn't think of this before.

Tj can let Retro Ban me- and THEN I can go caroling :)
I can use the vacation.....

Let me go find my music book

*
There was a lot of tension on this situation, a lot of lessons learned by a lot of people.
For those who have asked, no Retro and I are not at odds- we are still pming each other- He is intelligent enough to know my idea and choice was not personal.
And I am rational and calm enough to know a lot of people reacted due to not knowing the full story, and probably (probably) don't mean the mean things that were said about me.
Well, that is what I choose to believe :)

So on to another day of trading...right?

Cept for me, me, I got caroling with Sharop. I am an alto by the way scoot over..
