Um, no, its really not unrealistic. I called my stepmom by her first name the first few days I knew her, and then I called her "mom", about a week after knowing her......... And Penny most likely called Willona "mama" right away, because Willona was like her mom. She was one of the first people who saw that Penny was being abused and saved her from her abusive mom.......:)

Maybe Penny wanted Willona to feel accepted. Then again, Arnold and Willis didn't call Mr. Drummond Dad until I think the second season.

My aunt adopted a 8 yr little girl and after a week of being in my aunts home the little girl was calling her mom. So I can see it happening

Exactly. She wasn't depressed or moody. And that adoption went REAL QUICK didn't it?? And I don't know any adoption agency or children's services that would allow an abandoned child to stay with someone who isn't a foster parent.

But this is 70's and 80's TV. It was not as sophisticated as it is now. Take "Little House" for instance. Mary's baby burns in a fire and then the next few episodes, all is well. "la la la". Then next time that there is mention of the baby is when Mary is speaking up for her husband when he is not allowed a make up exam by the bar administrator. That occurs the season after the fire. I never liked that.

My father and his wife were foster parents for my cousin's three kids for a short time and even though they were "family" they still had to be looked into, their residence checked, the neighborhood, everything. Penny was abandoned and then next thing you know Willona is saying how Penny will be her "little girl" for a while. THAT IS STUPID.
