I've become recently fascinated with the theme song of the show...and was curious...does anyone know of any documented facts concerning the song? Specifically, the number of people who recognize the tune or have heard it? Anything along those lines would help me along in my quest.
Thanks!

I've heard that it was Earl Hagen that came up with the whistlin' part of the theme song (actual title "The Fishin' Hole") & is the one actually doing the whistlin' during the opening credits. According to one site, it's probably the single most recognized theme in all of television. The number of people that have heard it is probably in the millions. The lyrics however are not heard that often. They were written by actor Everett Sloan who played Jubal Foster in "Keeper Of The Flame".

Artist: ("The Fishin' Hole" by Everett Sloane, Earle Hagen and Herbert Spencer) Lyrics
Song: The Andy Griffith Show Lyrics
Well, now, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
We may not get a bite all day, but don't you rush away.
What a great place to rest your bones and mighty fine for skippin' stones,
You'll feel fresh as a lemonade, a-settin' in the shade.
Whether it's hot, whether it's cool, oh what a spot for whistlin' like a fool.
What a fine day to take a stroll and wander by The Fishin' Hole,
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.
We'll have no need to call the roll when we get to The Fishin' Hole,
There'll be you, me, and Old Dog Trey, to doodle time away.
If we don't hook a perch or bass, we'll cool our toes in dewy grass,
Or else pull up a weed to chaw, and maybe set and jaw.
Hangin' around, takin' our ease, watchin' that hound a-scratchin' at his fleas.
Come on, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.

I have an old record album from the 80s, with rare versions of some old TV show themes, & one of them is Andy Griffith singing the theme. It was taken from a record that came out in the 60s when "TAG" was airing. The album was called "MUSIC FROM THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW" or something like that.
It also has Eddie Albert singing the "Green Acres" theme, Bob Crane and John Banner talking while the "Hogans Heroes" theme is playing, & Desi Arnez singing the "I Love Lucy" theme, among others.
