PROJECTS-LOL I can kind of see why there was a lot controversy about the Florida character not working in season 1. It just didn;t make sense for her to not help out financially when you could see the husband wasn;t bringing that much money home. Most of the time a woman only stays home and not work when the man was bringing in BIG BUCKS. So there wasn't any reason for Florida to be home when she could have been working. I know you all should agree.

James wouldn't allow her to work.

For once in the many months I've posted on this board, I can agree with you on this topic. I think Florida should have had a part time job atleast. But if you remember James didn't want his wife to work, he wanted to be the bread winner. But his tone changed in season 3.

I know in the actual show that the James character didn;t want her working, I was talking about the producers/writers having both parents working from the very first episode.

He did great job with what he had to work with. At least he was a real man and stuck with and by his family and didn't run away like other cowards. So it doesn't matter if he brought home crumbs or the whole loaf, he brought home something and tried to provide for his family the best he could.

I'm just saying the fact that he brought home crumbs Florida should have had her a$$ out there working

I think Florida could have worked, cause she worked as a maid in Maude. But that whole thing never made sense to me. Like, they just invented a whole past for Florida as if the Maude years never happened.

I can see if the kids were small, but they were grown. She would have been home in time to make dinner, be there for when Michael got home. James was a stubborn mule and not very supportive when it came to his wife at times.

They didn't have to be so poor for a tight family.

I remember my grandmother telling me during the depression that her mother took care of everything and they just forked over all their money in unity to run things.

Seems like that would have worked just fine with the Evans. Thelma and JJ were certainly old enough to work part time. And FLorida really only had the militant midgit to take care of.

He said that because JJ didn't really know what hard work was. And plus James wanted his kids to do better then him. He didn't want them to struggle, That's why he was saying those things to discourage JJ from getting married. And plus it was just a stupid idea.

WHAT???? The man had every low paying job that he could get. It was hard for James to get a great paying job because he didn't have an education. I think James did the best that he could with what he had.

James tried his best as a father and husband, I think in one episode it stated that he had a sixth grade education. We all know that you can't do much with that. I also understand him wanting his wife to stay home with the kids, but fact of the matter was that the extra money florida brought in I am sure helped out somewhat, but not enough

You bring up a good point. Why wasn't there a show or scene where that was explained. It was like one day BOOM Florida was working with James not complaining. It would have been nice to explain how Florida came abt getting that job.

I do remember one ep where Florida has kind of a meltdown because she has devoted her whole life to her family and now just wants something for herself. She disappears for awhile and James is REALLY anxious to know where she went. She ends up saying she doesn't want to walk behind James or in front of him, but besides him. Maybe that's where the idea of her working started.

James was extremely proud and I don't think he would have felt good about Florida working, but i think he changed after that ep.

It would have been a good idea had that been mentioned in the episode. Give us an idea of how she got the job. Then again, for all we know, that scene probably does exist, just friggin TVLand doesn't show it. I can't remember if such a scene or mention of how she got that job exists. I can't remember everything. :crazy:
