The "World's Ugliest Dog" contest champion three years running, Sam, has died at age 14. He was well known for his repelling appearance, though his owner felt differently, and is devastated.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sam, the tiny dog whose hairless body and crooked teeth earned him a reputation as the World’s Ugliest Dog, has died.

The pooch died Friday, just short of his 15th birthday, his owner said.

“I don’t think there’ll ever be another Sam,” Susie Lockheed said, adding: “Some people would think that’s a good thing.”

Sam won the ugliest dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair this summer for the third year in a row. The pedigreed Chinese crested had made appearances on TV in Japan, radio in New Zealand and in Britain’s Daily Mirror tabloid. He also had met Donald Trump on a talk show set.

Lockheed said she initially was terrified of Sam when she agreed to take him in as a rescue dog six years ago on a 48-hour trial basis. Although she fell in love with him, his appearance repulsed her then-boyfriend and prompted the man to break up with her.

Later, however, Sam became a matchmaker by bringing together Lockheed and her current beau, who saw a picture of the two on an online dating site.

Lockheed said she had Sam euthanized after she learned Sam’s heart was failing.

She said she’s felt a little lost ever since, and is sleeping with Sam’s favorite toy — a stuffed bear he picked up and carried home.

That's so sad!! :(

And I'm sorry, but IMO whoever started labeling him "World's ugliest dog".....well, that was kind of mean. Although he's a dog and wouldn't know what "Ugly" even means.....he was still a living thing. Maybe I'm a little too senstitive....

Because he was a sweet, cuddly dog, the owner said. If I were that dogs owner, I'd be really upset about him being labeled "World's ugliest dog" cause IMO it's just mean.

Well, I have two different thoughts on this:

Firstly, it's sad that Sam was probably feared and judged all of his life, just because of his appearance. I also feel really bad that he was known all over the world for being the World's Ugliest Dog. Now, that being said...

His appearance is terrifying. I mean, I know that sounds hypocritical, but it's true. Although I feel bad for him...he's horrifying! He seriously looks like some kind of a zombie out of a movie. I can imagine what small children (and even adults) went through if they ever passed by him on the street.

I'm still sad about his death, though.

ATTN: HIS OWNER ENTERED HIM INTO THAT CONTEST THAT DEEMED HIM THE UGLIEST DOG IN THE WORLD... so chances are, neither pet nor owner felt too bad about it.

Oh, -I- know the owner is the one who did it.

I'm just saying that it's sort of sad. It almost seems like she exploited him or something, just to gain whatever she could from having an ugly dog.

Just because the owner was fine with it doesn't mean the dog would have been. He was just along for the ride.

P.S.- You don't need to use such a bold, sarcastic, attention grabbing font to let me or anyone else know that his owner entered him in the contest. I think it's pretty apparent that we can all figure out for ourselves that the dog didn't walk in there by himself and register for it.

the owner is the one who put the dog IN THE UGLY DOG CONTEST...so, i don't think the owner can be upset.

Don't be sorry Rock Princess...you can't help what others say or post here or anywhere else. I like the thread. The dog IS UGLY. Can't change that fact. But hopefully he enjoyed his 15 years on earth and is now in doggie heaven.

Actually, there's a few. I don't think any were as famous as Sam though. Here's one who also died recently: http://dogexplorer.com/content/view/57/1/

And here's Sam's owners' blog; it's got alot of sweet things on it: http://samugliestdog.typepad.com/

Zippy's pic was too small to see. But he didn't look as ugly as Sam. Tator wasn't too cute.

Interesting that there are so many "ugly" dogs...or people willing to tout them as such.
