Best news of the year
Darryl
Heidi Dawn 11-21-2005, 10:36 AM This is so great! I haven't seen Gimme a Break reruns in about 16 years. It'll be nice to have the episodes on DVD.
ClassicTV4Ever 11-21-2005, 10:37 AM Just got the e-mail. I am psyched beyond belief. And did the calculation and it also turns out that the episodes will be unedited!! I'm on the verge of doing cartwheels!!
jeffersonsfan 11-21-2005, 10:44 AM Great news! I'm so happy! :) :) :) :)
Eric777 11-21-2005, 11:01 AM Its great news and sad news at the same time
I just wish our Nell could be here to celebrate
MacLeaper 11-21-2005, 11:28 AM Wow! I loved Gimme a Break! as a child. It's been a long time since I've seen it regularly. The last time I caught an episode was a few years ago when a local station happened to be running it. I've haven't seen this show (other than that) since the 1980s, so it'll be great to see Season 1 on DVD!!! Awesome!
seventies_sitcoms 11-21-2005, 12:01 PM ...and there is NO Joey Lawrence!!!! I'll be getting this set! :)
Brieannas21 11-21-2005, 03:21 PM Just got the e-mail. I am psyched beyond belief. And did the calculation and it also turns out that the episodes will be unedited!! I'm on the verge of doing cartwheels!!
I feel the same way, I couldn't believe it when I got the email this morning, I had to read it twice. This has made my day. So next Feburary 14th I'll be at Best Buy getting my DVD.
Wildchats 11-21-2005, 03:34 PM Everone buy season 1. If you don't, we probably will have a harder chance to get season 2 and others on DVD. Remember, 227 was just as popular...IN RERUNS THAT IS...BLAH. 227 is never seen anymore, and it's season 1 didn't get many buyers, so there have been no more releases.
I say this because we waited this long for GAB. I love this show. Eric loves this show. Everyone on here loves this show. Let's all buy season 1. Tell your friends, family, co-workers, people you meet in the street, et. I'm sure people in their late 30's and on would buy it. People younger, who never heard of it, probably wont, unless they remember it in re-runs on USA or on channels when they were like 5 or 6 in the late 80's. Hahaha!
So buy, buy, buy!!!
gidgetgrape 11-21-2005, 03:49 PM Yay!! :) I can't wait to get it.

I'll plan on buying it...i can't wait
TennX 11-21-2005, 10:34 PM This is so awesome! I definitly plan on getting this!!! And just as Wildchats says, if the sales for this season doesn't do well, we won't see a season 2. Look at Night Court season 1. Most people want to wait until season 3 comes out because that's when Markie Post joined the cast, but there might not even be a season 3 set because not enough people got season 1.
If you don't have 35 bucks to shell out, start saving NOW.
A first look at the Season One cover. Is anyone surprised they are calling it "Season One" and not the "Complete First Season"? Was there any music used in season 1 that could be replaced?

I don't know about music as in popular songs. But Nell did sing a few songs in season 1, if I recall.
MischievousSpirit 11-22-2005, 12:58 PM If this DVD set is edited in anyway, I simply won't buy it. Universal is notorius for replacing music on their sets. Look at Knight Rider and Quantum Leap. Is there anyway somebody can find out as soon as possible, whether or not anything is edited? I find it very strange that the Charles In Charge set says "The Complete First Season", and Gimme a Break only says "Season One."
At least they're using single sided DVD's instead of those stupid DVD-18s.

I don't care if it's edited or not, I'm still buying it. It could be the best of aqnd I would still buy it LOL
greelywinger 11-22-2005, 05:19 PM Exactly. I hope they release all 6 seasons.
I can get rid off my VHS tapes.
Dwaynew 11-23-2005, 12:47 AM Great news!!!!! and timely for Valentines!
Skywalker 11-23-2005, 03:06 AM This is great news!!! :woohoo: I hope season 1 isn't gonna be edited but I'll still pick it up anyway.
Pavan 11-30-2005, 11:52 AM Bonus features for Gimme a Break! Season 1:
- "The Great '80s TV Flashback" - 30 min featurette
- Bonus episode of "Charles in Charge" from season one and "Kate & Allie" from season one
- Bonus episode of "Gimme a Break!" from season 2
Bonus features for Charles in Charge Season 1:
- "The Great '80s TV Flashback" - 30 min featurette
- Bonus episode of "Charles in Charge" Season 2 with the Powell family!
jeffersonsfan 11-30-2005, 08:50 PM Cool! I love special features.
Pavan 12-01-2005, 12:48 AM I have also spread the word on the news blog: http://sitcomsonline.blogspot.com/2005/11/whats-happening-leads-tv-land-to.html
SoapFan71 12-01-2005, 04:38 PM Some bloopers or interviews would have been better "Bonus Features"!!
Pavan 12-02-2005, 12:33 PM Eric777 is wrong once again.
I think they will release S2. Universal is usually good in releasing subsequent seasons.

Yeah usually that's a sign that the eps are edited when COMPLETE is not in the title. But it's rarely sseen in syndicaton so GAB fans should be thrilled regardless. Remember, this is not a show you can watch every night on N@N like the Cosby Show so edited scenes shouldn't bother you.
robby76 12-02-2005, 10:58 PM Was the first season funny? I remember watching it avidly, but as a kid I'd watch anything.
greelywinger 12-02-2005, 11:01 PM The running time for each episode is 24.6 min. (That's nearly 25 min.)
Sounds to me like they are uncut.
Syndicated episodes usually run 20-22 min. each

Yes, it because I liked this show a lot better than the Cosby Show.
Dean Winchester 12-06-2005, 04:25 AM Eric777 is wrong once again.
I think they will release S2. Universal is usually good in releasing subsequent seasons.
for this show, I hope you're right.
I just keep thinking of Baretta (season 1 came out in 2002... no season 2 yet) or Dream On (seasons 1 and 2 came out together in fall 2004... no word on a season 3 as of yet) and it makes me always assume the worst when it comes to Universal, especially for a show like this which likely isn't expected to sell the numbers that Knight Rider or Murder She Wrote would sell.

IF it's a N@N ep-"18min-lol
Brian Damage 12-06-2005, 11:10 AM This is great news! I would prefer if the eps were unedited, but I haven't seen this show in years and wouldn't remember what scenes were cut out anyway. lol
TV_Fan 12-06-2005, 01:04 PM Judging from the episode times it seems like these aren't going to be syndicated episodes. The only possible things cut I would think are any songs that might have been sung. I'm hoping not. Even so, I'd still buy it. I think it will sell enough to have subsequent seasons released.
Season 2 bonus episode is Nell Goes to Jail as some people predicted.
Bonus Material:
--The Great 80’s Flashback
--Bonus Episode-- Kate & Allie Season 1: A Very Loud Family
--Bonus Episode-- Charles in Charge Season 1: Extracurricular Activity
--Bonus Episode – Gimme a Break! Season 2: Nell Goes to Jail
Nell Carter shines as Nellie Ruth “Nell” Harper, the role that twice earned her Emmy® and Golden Globe Award nominations, and helped redefine the meaning of “family.” Available for the first time ever on DVD, Gimme a Break! is the funny, hip and sometimes poignant portrayal of the Kanisky family: widowed Police Chief Carl; his three daughters Katie, Julie and Samantha; and their unflappable housekeeper-turned-surrogate mother (Carter). This 3-disc set includes all 19 episodes from Season One, as well as a preview from Season Two, bonus episodes from the smash-hit sitcoms Kate and Allie and Charles in Charge, and a special featurette that takes a look back at other great TV shows of the eighties. Featuring renowned guest stars such as Danny Glover, Rue McClanahan and Helen Hunt, Gimme a Break! is the beloved sitcom that delivers both love and laughs.
Disc 1: 3 Hours 17 Minutes; Disc 2: 3 Hours 17 Minutes; Disc 3: 1 Hours 14 Minutes
Dean Winchester 01-27-2006, 01:12 AM TJ, have you gotten your copy yet, and if so, are the episodes edited or complete? Earlier in this thread there was a lot of concern over if they're NBC or syndicated, considering TV One will be airing it the weekend before the DVD comes out uncut, edited DVD's would be such a waste. Either way, I'm definately getting it though
No, I haven't got it yet. Universal is usually a bit late at sending them out. The only time I got anything early from them was Leave it to Beaver. I hope I get it before it's released.
FredScuttle 01-27-2006, 08:34 PM Season 2 bonus episode is Nell Goes to Jail as some people predicted.
woo-hoo, probably my favorite episode. I've got it on tape somewhere from years ago, but it's a syndicated cut...hopefully this will be an original.
OKCRay 01-29-2006, 03:35 AM ...and there is NO Joey Lawrence!!!! I'll be getting this set! :)
... but it has two episodes with "airhead Angie"!!!!! Woo-Hoo!!!!!!:happyface
Pavan 02-02-2006, 02:36 AM Sneak peek at the menus!
Brieannas21 02-02-2006, 03:31 PM Man those are plain, but I don't care as long as I get my DVD on time.
robby76 02-02-2006, 08:47 PM Man those are plain, but I don't care as long as I get my DVD on time.
I see your point - it is a little bland, but it's also nice to have something that fits the timeline... y'know early 80's. It gets you in the mood for the show. If it had some flash animations and state-of-the-art artwork etc, it'd be like watching it in the 2000's.
But yeah I see your point... the colours could've been slightly livelier.
FredScuttle 02-07-2006, 09:58 PM Brieannas21's .sig read: GIMME A BREAK! DVD Release February 14, 06...Go To
Universal and Pre-Order NOW!!! .
That's funny, I picked up mine today on Feb 7th :D
DVDFreaker 02-08-2006, 05:48 PM I just preordered it on Amazon, I loved that show when I was a kid, can't wait to get it next week! :D
An 80s Guy 02-08-2006, 10:43 PM I can't wait i don't have a credit card so i have to wait to buy it but i'm counting down the days
Dean Winchester 02-08-2006, 11:00 PM I've watched four episodes thus far and all of them are in the 23-25 minute vein, which is pretty common for 1981-1982 series. I can't vouch for the whole show yet but so far I've only come across uncut episodes.

Does it have a music alteration disclaimer on it?
FredScuttle 02-10-2006, 11:06 PM Does it have a music alteration disclaimer on it?
What music alteration? Just curious...
TV_Fan 02-11-2006, 12:59 PM Universal is known for replacing music on their sets. I'm hoping they didn't do it with this one. Their disclaimers say words to the effect "music may differ from televised version", "some music has been changed.." or "includes all music except for one (or two) songs..". I've seen this on many of their sets.
There is nothing on the packaging to indicate any music alterations. All episodes run over 24 minutes.

TV_Fan 02-14-2006, 12:12 AM I am so psyched to get this set tomorrow!
Better Days 02-14-2006, 12:33 AM I just made my 1st TV DVD purchase, finally: I pre-ordered GAB, along with Charles in Charge and Growing Pains.
GAB Sales rank on Amazon JUMPED from 1700 to 500 in the last 3 days. But it's not near where Growing Pains was 1 day before release. But GP is getting alot of promotion.
ClassicTV4Ever 02-14-2006, 01:34 AM Oh my God I can't wait until tomorrow. I got my e-mail from Amazon saying that it shipped today (hell I overnighted it, that's how bad I want it lol). So around eleven-ish tomorrow morning, I shall have that thing in my grubby little hands :)
Considering that GAB is such an obscure 80's show, I think it's rank anywhere in the hundreds is good. I just hope the overall sales will satisfy Universal enough to continue the series. Hopefully their standards aren't too incredibly high. Has anyone seen any commercials for it yet? I've yet to see one if there is one at all.
TV_Fan 02-14-2006, 01:50 PM Man I love this show more than I remember even! I saw a few copies sell at Best Buy this morning (I think) and it was listed in their flyer, but I haven't seen any commercials for it. I've also been checking the amazon sales rank and it's usually remained higher than Charles in Charge. I don't think this is an obscure 80's show. Everyone who I've spoken to about it has either watched it regularly, occasionally or at least heard of it. Universal will probably continue releasing this and CIC, they even have a site to register for news for upcoming releases. I think even if sales aren't THAT high they'll still continue to release. They're usually good at continuing their sets unlike other companies. If this were a Sony release I'd be concerned. I'm so happy to finally have this show on DVD!
ClassicTV4Ever 02-14-2006, 02:07 PM Well I guess around here with my family and friends at least, it's obscure :)
OKCRay 02-17-2006, 04:16 AM Does it have a music alteration disclaimer on it?
My guess is that if there was one it most likely would have affected the "Hot Muffins" episode, since they sing a few bars of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" and "Just The Way You Are". Happily neither of these were altered on the DVD, so apparently there were no problems securing permission from any music copyright holders. :)
ThomasE 02-17-2006, 09:23 PM Man I love this show more than I remember even! I saw a few copies sell at Best Buy this morning (I think) and it was listed in their flyer, but I haven't seen any commercials for it.
I saw the commercial for it. There was funny clip in the commercial:
Everyone is at the dinner table.
Nell: You are what you eat...........more jackass meat, chief?
TV_Fan 02-17-2006, 11:48 PM I saw the commercial for it. There was funny clip in the commercial:
Everyone is at the dinner table.
Nell: You are what you eat...........more jackass meat, chief?
I actually just saw a commercial yesterday on TV Land. I didn't catch what they said in it though so maybe it was that one.
TV_Fan 02-17-2006, 11:53 PM My guess is that if there was one it most likely would have affected the "Hot Muffins" episode, since they sing a few bars of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" and "Just The Way You Are". Happily neither of these were altered on the DVD, so apparently there were no problems securing permission from any music copyright holders. :)
Also in "Second Time Around" they play and sing "Prisoner of Love" by Perry Como. I can't think of any other copyrighted songs in the first season. I'm pleased nothing was altered. If they had to alter it they most likely would have had to cut the entire scenes, which in my opinion is worse that just replacing background music.
