View Full Version : As a child did you ever witness something you didn't know was bad, but now you do?
Ireneparalegal 11-20-2005, 07:54 PM When I was 7, I recently met this girl who had just moved in the neighborhood. I had gone over to her house one time and I had seen her father and mother hitting each other. At first the mother was laughing but then she was crying. I was so confused. I didn't know what to think. I know now from what I heard and seen at her house on many occasions, that those two people were abusing each other. Physically and mentally. I had told my older sister what I had seen and she forbade me from ever going over there again. I didn't understand why. I had never ever seen any adult hit another adult. I had never been exposed to any sort of violence.
Brad Russ 11-20-2005, 08:33 PM I had these stupid ass bigoted neighbors who always used the N word. I asked my dad what the word meant, and when he told me it was a vulgar name that stupid people use against black people, I almost started crying. He asked me where I heard the word, I told him I heard it from our neighbors, and he never let me play with them again after that.
GARFIELDKOOL 11-20-2005, 09:08 PM The projects where I grew up, these neighbors who were good friends of my mother's, had all kinds of flashy stuff. They were some of very few people in the projects that seemed comfortable. They decorated their homes with nice things, they had decent automobiles, and like I mentioned before, they were friends of my mother. My mother use to party and play old school funk-soul songs with the woman(which is how I got hooked on the music) I just thought they were comfortable. Come to find out, years later, my mother told me they were selling drugs from out of their home. The things you don't know when you are a child.
EmoJoe 11-20-2005, 10:51 PM Someone in my school said the "b" word once when I was 8 or so and then I said it not knowing it was a bad word and by mom got really mad and then she reliazed I didnt know it was a bad word.
Jo_Luvs_Ketchup 11-20-2005, 11:36 PM When I was a child, I witnessed so many types of abuses in my family. I was so little though. If I was older, I could've prevented so many years of pain and hurt:(
Ireneparalegal 11-21-2005, 04:55 PM I can relate to the bad word thing. I heard someone say a bad word in spanish and then I repeated at home. Man, I never saw so many eyes bug out in my life!!!!!
MsOrange 11-21-2005, 05:11 PM I was sitting in my kitchen when I was yougn, and I was making a ryme for every letter in the alphabet, and I got to Duck and stopped for a minute, then yelled out "Oh Oh I know! F*UCK!!!!"
Mijada 11-21-2005, 06:54 PM When I was about 7 or 8 my older brother and sister and I were all sitting at the kitchen table. Our mom was at the sink with her back to us washing dishes. My brother pulled out what I thought was just a cigarette and he and my sis were taking turns smoking it. I noticed a funny smell but didn't say anything. I didn't realize till years later that they were actually smoking weed. My mom never noticed a thing.
I also remember my brother and my dad coming home drunk on numerous occasions when I was little. I didn't think anything of it. Just thought that's what guys did.
One of the times when my dad came home drunk, I was about 4 or 5, my mom started yelling and screaming at him and he was just kind of ignoring her. She got so mad that she went into the kitchen, grabbed a stack of plates from the cupboard and came back into the living room and threw them one by one like frisbees at the wall and then ordered my father to clean up the mess. It didn't really scare me or anything for that was pretty normal behavior around my house. The little nicks that the plates made are still visible on my moms living room wall nearly 30 years later.

Rebel Queen 1980 11-22-2005, 02:37 AM Back in my old neighborhood we used to have some next door neighbors
that were always fighting. This man next door would abuse his wife and kids.
One time my Dad and I heard the wife say something and she sounded
funny so we started laughing that she was just talking in a strange way
to get attention. But then we ended find out the real truth. The lady
was missing all her front teeth. I know from the fact it wasn't by tooth
decay or gum disease because once when I was outside with my niece
I heard the man yelling at his wife. She was starting speak when he
yelled at her to shut or else he bust her jaw!,And his sons came outside
yelling Don't hit our mom!,Don't hit mom!,The man then hit and punched
his sons and youngest daughter. My niece and I ran inside my house
and shut the front door. All we could do then is think about how lucky
we were to have loving caring parents.

yeah my parents got into a huge fight a few years ago (which i didn't witness) that involved my mom throwing glass around and there are still very visible dents in the kitchen floor from it. my dad physically assaulted her and she took me and my brother away from him to live in a safehouse for a few weeks and she prosecuted him and made it illegal for him to be within 50 feet of her. yeah, quite a messed up family i have. i probably sound like i'm exaggerating though but i'm not.

That reminds me of a story my grandmama told me about when she was in 4th or 5th rade and she was in school and all the kids had to write on the blackboard a word that rhymed with duck with a letter of the alphabet, well, guess what she wrote? and the kids started laughing and she didnt know why, she was like 10 she didnt know it was bad word, the teacher told her mom, and she told her not to write that word because it was a bad word, the teacher said that too, I think if I remember correctly , then she told her mom
Dead Girl Superstar 11-22-2005, 03:55 AM I remember when i was in preschool, and i was about 5 or 6 years old, a girl gave me the middle finger and I had no idea what it meant or why it was an insult until I went home and did it to my mum, and soon found out that its not the best thing to do...

You would think after all these years, teacher's would not ask kids to find words that rhyme with DUCK!!!! How stupid can they be? Or naive?
felicitylen 11-22-2005, 04:04 PM I remember when I was younger, I loved playing pretend with purses. I was at my babysitter's house, and I went through her purse. I saw something in her wallet. It was in a package. I remember opening the package thinking it was gum. I didn't put it in my mouth because the "gum" felt weird. I realized years later it was a condom. That would have been a bad thing if I actually started chewing it.
KristinHerreraFan 11-22-2005, 04:08 PM once when I was in 3rd grade, I heard this kid say the F word, I didn't know what it meant, coz I had no idea there was such a thing as an F word. So then a few moments later when the teacher came in, I said "Ms. Randall, What does *beep* mean?" and boy was I ever in trouble!
Michael [hXc] 11-22-2005, 05:28 PM hey that's weird, my homeroom/science teacher this year is a Ms. Randall.
