Although I loved the show EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND, I am inclined to agree
with you regarding Debra. I don't know how Ray put up with her constant
nagging and bickering. Yeah, O.K., she was attractive. I'll give her that. But
her attitude was always so negative. True, other TV sit-com wives sometimes
put down their husbands (e.g., Carrie Heffernan on KING OF QUEENS), but not
to the extent that Debra Barone did.

yeah she does nag too much. i was surprised the way she reacted in the last episode when ray might not have woken up really. in the simpsons marge is pretty optimistic and nice considering what a terrible husband homer is

If you watched the show from beginning to end, you know that Ray gets away with murder compared to relatively minor nagging he gets from Debra (beyond the deserved).

I think the character of Debra is great, not without faults, and in the real world no man would be able to pull the crap Ray does and stay married to a woman like her.

I think shes fabulous. And if shes abit crazy, can you blame her? I'd go f*ing nuts with those relatives!

Debra was just a product of the environment she was in. She was constantly intruded on, insulted and ganged up on. I would be the same way if that was my life.

Debra is the only reason I watch the show. She's gorgeous (She got better looking every season) and a terrific wife. And she's right for getting on Ray. He's a jerk. He never puts any effort into the marriage unless he's forced to, and he's under the thumb of that hateful monster of a mother. The only thing that ticked me off regarding Debra was when she'd fall for Marie's "loving family" crap. Yeah, there were times when Deb could be unfair to Ray, but the hell she had to go through on a daily basis warrants letting off some steam.

And Brian Damage- your avatar is one of the best scenes in modern TV history. Hoo-ahh!

I LOVE Debra. Ray's a lovable horse's bum, so Debra has to nag! And, I love MArie. She's hilarious.

It is not fair that she should have to put up with Ray's crap and not to expect a little harping. He was as dumb as a fence post!! I still don't think she was as bad as Marie. Now there is someone I would have liked to smack in real life. At the very least I think Debra should have given her a real good talking to. And then smacked her!! Lol

I like debra, I mean im a girl so im not going to say she's hot, but she is pretty. But i think she come off as most people i mean she nags a little but who dosent? and I mean she always does it in best spirits becuase it should be something ray should be doing anyways. After all, she's the wife that everyone can relate to. I don't know for sure cuz im not married but she dose remind me a lot of my family so, i dont think shes any different than anyone else.

I have been watching Everybody Loves Raymond for many years, and my favorite charactors still have not changed:

ray - too whiny, very dry & dull sense of humor (kinda lacking personality too)
debra- very strong actress, is able to "carry" her share of the scene.
marie - priceless!
frank - very good actor as well, he is a little dry sometimes.
robert - very dull, lacking any real personality and not much of an actor. His lines & motions are always the same, they almost never change.

Just my 2 cents!

I completely agree with that although I do think Ray can be funny at times.

Hmmm. I agree with all that except -
Depending on the episode, I think Brad Garrett can be hilarious. The times when Robert tries to outdo Ray, he is funny. Also, I think Robert became funnier after he married Amy.

All the characters went too far every once in a while, but in my opinion Patricia Heaton is a fine actor and an EXCELLENT physical comedienne above all.

I have never considered her to be mean. I am surprised that some would watch the show if they cannot stand her.

Perhaps some of the acting does go over the top towards the end of this shows run. I have noticed this in many series, that for some reason the characters behavior and the situations seem to be exaggerated and over the top towards the end of the series run.

Ray was a good father and family man but was excessively lazy, lazy because he was a "mama's boy" and expected women to take care of him.

I think there was always the conflict between him working and her being a housewife. Ray worked in NYC, which is an hour away or more one way. Journalism like any profession has its stresses and deadlines. On the weekend when Ray was home, he wanted to go golfing, or watch football with his brother or whatever. In his thinking, his wife is the mother and is responsible for the car of the house and children. Debra doesn't have a life besides the family and the inlaws across the street, who were troublesome at times (although I personally would of loved to of had Frank for a father!)

Besides sports and journalism, Ray wasn't too smart of a guy either. Someone with no common sense and never really had to deal with much reality. He was the favorite child of a Catholic family, went to college, worked as a furniture mover living at home, then on to Newsday after his marriage. Hell, his parents even helped him buy the home he's in. He's never had to work that hard in his life and everything is falling into place for him easily (much like Ray Romano himself, who was an unknown comic and after 9 years of this show is a Zillionaire.)

I really like "The Middle". It is a nice family program and Patricia Heaton's new character Frankie is nothing like Debra Barone and is far more likable. I like the husband, the kids, all the characters in the show.

OH Nuts!

I loved Debra. And as someone said, I'd be on edge too if I had Marie & Frank as my in-laws. And Marie is LUCKY Debra didn't haul off and hit her one. Marie could be infuriating with all those passive-aggressive and back-handed insults. And Ray could be a little baby at times - so Debra did have to get on his case occassionally. AND she was sooo smart - remember the time she saves the kitchen from burning down (and the house) She rocks. Sign me - A BIG DEBRA FAN

They are great but the show was blessed with all the regulars really adding something special (that's why I love it so)

Debra is great, she only gets mad because her mother in law tries her hardest to get under Debra's skin. She plays a great mom, adds a lot to the show

I have to agree here. The last few seasons, Debra became a complete shrew and a harpy. No offense to Patty Heaton, who did the job the best she could, but constantly calling her husband an idiot all the time turned me off.

She had act the part she's given it's not her fault, I think she was made that naggy and rude for comedic relief but sheesh

l know one thing that annoys me about her,
ever notice in a lot of the shows she had that rough voice?
Not her or the characters fault, but it gets on my nerves,

To me, she was a hypocrite! When Raymond finally grew himself a spine when getting onto his parents after their car was driven into his house, she actually thought that he was going too far and when Robert jumped on Marie for ruining his FBI job interview, Debra actually defended her when she knew how overbearing Marie was.

God bless you always!!!

Ray puts up with Debra's nagging for the same reason a lot of men would - sex on a (semi-) regular basis with a very hot, sexy woman. Being pretty alone would NEVER be enough to keep a man with all the nagging she does. You gotta take the good with the bad; as long as the good is GREAT!

She always felt like she had to be the one stuck taking care of the kids and always complained about how Ray never helped out, but no one said she couldn't have taken birth control or got abortions either if she resented being a mother and stay at home housewife so much. Or she could have got a job then got a sitter for the kids. Either way, anybody that felt sorry for her is a fool.

Or she could have just divorced Ray. She should have known Ray was never going to change. If she were really as smart as people say she is she would have seen Ray for what he was and not have married him in the first place!

Ray was like a lot of fathers from the 1950's-60's and before. The man works all week, brings home the money and the wife is at home with the children, cooking and taking care of the house. On the weekends, he wants to play golf or sit on his ass at home. He does love his children, but they could play in a minefield if the Augusta Open (more or less the World Series of golf) was on TV.

Ray is also a "mama's boy". Marie is a lot like the mother on the show "The Goldbergs" and how she micromanaged their children's lives, who thinks their children are perfect, even though they arent. Marie is also one of these women who does not think any woman is good enough for her sons. Frank on the other hand was awesome!

Cant blame Debra for blowing her top sometimes, with a biatch mother, three kids to run around after, and a husband who is either in the city working, or selfishly does his own thing on the weekend.

Lastly, Patricia Heaton is a babe! She is nine years older than me, and is believe or not in her late 50's (will be 57 her next birthday) and she still looks good. If you have a 57 year old wife who looks like her, feel lucky, even though you might get the stink eye at best or a frying pan to the head at worst. I think Family Guy (not a fan) did a cut parody of Debra finally going nuts and chasing Ray with broken glass!

I think she does go a bit too far with the nagging. And no she may not be classically beautiful but she's far from ugly. I really admire the actress. She came to Hollywood from NY at 32 which is old to start acting and she had no agent. And before Raymond her and her husband struggled and she had TV shows and pilots that failed but she didn't give up.
