hi like many of you i liked the bobby;s hero ep from season 4 .but one thing ive noticed about myself ever since i watch this ep over 20 years ago is that every time a movie or any type of program about jessie james airs on tv i always find myself thinking about this ep does anyone else here think of the ep whenever they see something about jessie james or am i the only one who does this?

"Bobby's Hero" is a LANDMARK episode in excellent writing, character development, and storytelling. Mike Lookinland's interaction with Burt Mustin is just brilliant and the imact of how that carries over in the dream sequence. This is so incredible because this episode was presented in 1973 about kids bringing guns to school and worshipping "bad guys." (A daring subject for its time.) You watch this episode and you forget that this is supoosed to be this little family sitcom. Yes, it is that good. I am also glad based on the DVD that what was cut from other versions. (Looking for Mike's speech and Mike practicing his speech) did NOT detract from the storyline like so many other censored Brady Bunch episodes do.

The only criticisms as I have said, is they should have used the sound of a real gun going off in the dream sequence and perhaps the prayer before eating pizza ("And keep us ever greatful of they bountiful blessings.") was a little over the top! But there are so many wonderful things about this episode. For anyone who doesn't like The Brady Bunch, they should give this episode a chance. They will NEVER forget it.

I think I mentioned this before, but my guess is that they thought a real gun sound would be too realistic and scary for kids watching. I felt they did very well in getting across how horrible it was to Bobby to think of his family being killed without scaring the kids who were watching. And since it was a dream, the "Bang Bang" worked because dreams often have unreal aspects to them anyway.

A contemporary show might involve someone idolizing Robert Stroud, using the fictional movie The Birdman of Alcatraz as a source and then finding out the truth about Robert Stroud.

"And keep us ever mindful of thy bountiful blessings......amen." (wait ten years for the kids to reply)........"Amen!"

I find it funny how this is really the only episode where the family is shown praying together at the dinner table! And if they do, then why do we never see them at church? They went to what I am assuming is their home congregation in the episode "The Voice of Christmas", so that Carol could sing the Christmas solo, but why do they never go back to church? Hopefully the Bradys didn't lose their faith!

It actually reminds me of an episode on Little House on the Prairie back when the real life Jesse James galloped into town while running from the law.
