Man who killed Lennon couldn't have stopped

NEW YORK (AP) — The man who murdered John Lennon 25 years ago says "nothing could have stopped" his twisted quest to track down and assassinate the ex-Beatle.

"It was like a train, a runaway train," Mark David Chapman said about his John Lennon obsession in an interview with Dateline NBC.

"I was under total compulsion," killer Mark David Chapman says in a segment to be aired at 8 p.m. ET Friday on Dateline NBC.

"It was like a train, a runaway train, there was no stopping it."

Chapman fatally shot Lennon on Dec. 8, 1980, as the musician and his wife, Yoko Ono, returned home from a night in a Manhattan recording studio. Chapman's comments came from audiotapes made in 1991-92 and first used as part of a British documentary.

Chapman recalled waiting for Lennon that night, then reacting as he saw a limousine pull up outside the ex-Beatle's home.

"I heard a voice in my head saying, 'Do it, do it,'" Chapman recounted. "And as he passed me I pulled out the gun, aimed at his back and pulled the trigger five times in succession."

Chapman recalled that his desire to kill Lennon began one day in his apartment in Hawaii, where he was sitting on the floor and looking at the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album. His animosity soon began to consume Chapman.

"There was a successful man who kind of had the world on a chain, so to speak, and there I was, not even a link of that chain, just a person who had no personality," Chapman said. "And something in me just broke."

Chapman, 50, is eligible for parole again next year. Ono has repeatedly argued against Chapman's release, and his bids for freedom were already rejected three times by the state parole board.

HE IS A BASTARD WHO DESERVES NO MERCY AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN SENTENCED TO DEATH:mad:

Every person who murders a person should be sentenced to death, not just this guy.

I doubt he'll get out though. I'll be very surprised if he does get parole.

What I don't understand is why we are still giving this guy the spotlight.

This is what Mark David Chapman wants!

It's why he killed John Lennon, so he could be interviewed and be written about, so he could sit there and tell his story over and over again to the media.

He wanted to be famous. To aknowledge his exsistence is to give him what he wants.

I wish they would just ignore him.

Chapman should never see the light of day again.

I agree with TJL, it was tragic but it was 25 years ago. The murderer is serving his well deserved punishment now and hopefully suffering. Just let it go and remember John Lennon for the great musician and person that he was-- NOT for his death.

You are so right Tom! Ignore him and kill him like he did to John! I am so sick of these pathetic spineless losers who are looking for attention. Well he surely got his 15 minutes of fame didn't he? What a pathetic creep! (Like Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gasey,Jefferey Dahmer............. All little nobody's who had to make a name for themselves. I do feel sorry for the mentally ill but in these cases it is just a lame excuse:mad: I know a few mentally ill people who have never commited murders. Give me a break!

I hear that Penny Lane. What gets me is that John's killer is being interviewed by DATELINE, which is close to the date of John's death on Dec. 8, 1980. 25 YEARS!!! Why does Dateline choose to put this bastard in the spotlight? Why not interview his children, his wife? Maybe not interview them at all, give them their peace to remember this horrible anniversary IN PRIVATE. I don't need to hear what this bastard did. His words will never change the past. Why do they need to put him in front of cameras again? LOCK THE DOOR FOR GOOD AND LET THE BASTARD ROT. Isn't that what prison is all abt?

"Not even a link of that chain"??!! Geeeeez, what the hell did Chapman WANT??? ohno: Didn't that buffoon consider that he was only about twelve when that album came out?? BOO FRICKIN' HOO. :crybaby:

Okay, maybe the album didn't really have any connection to that, but gosh, should have gotten a hobby and a social life--THEN YOU COULD HAVE GOTTEN A PERSONALITY.

I hope to God there's a huge outpouring of hate mail to Dateline. This waste of bumwipe should not even be given the time of day by any stupid interviewer, it's like he's looking for "pity", like he's some wonderful well-adjusted member of society who's "learned" from his crime. What a sick dorko. Attention whore.

I haven't seen Dateline for quite sometime now. I find them overall light in substance like most US network news shows.

I highly agree. I am going to visit Dateline's website and lash out at them for this unnecessary crap. I love what you posted Captain A. Awesome. This evildoer has no reason other than to rot in his cell; to give him even five seconds of airtime is a total disgrace to the memory of John Lennon. To hear him say that nothing was going to stop him, then WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS INTERVIEW? A tribute to John Lennon would be a much better thing to do at this time or at any time; not show the person who took away a human life because HE HAD NO PERSONALITY, HE FELT HE WAS WORTHLESS. Hey, he is worthless, he was given a life and he chose to throw it away. THE SOONER HE IS GONE THE BETTER. Dateline, here I come with a very nasty email.....
