Why did ABC wait until March of 1997 to start the season instead of September of 1996?

I always wondered about that too. I guess they thought they could cash in on the popularity of the movie Clueless by making a series out of it. I feel they should've stuck by Step By Step and started airing it in September.

All I know is that they wanted to use the 6th season as a midseason show. Cooper and Step by Step were only replacements if Sabrina and Cluess did not do well in the ratings.
